    Posted: 14 Jul 2009 at 4:26am
This is the 1st interview of "Get to know your formite" and hopefully many more will follow.

This week we get to meet Regal-Roller and ask him a few questions. As the interviews continue and I get better at it the questions will change for every formite who we get to know.

So here goes...............

Regal-Roller is Ryan and was born in 1986.

Q.1. Where were you born and where did you go up? Where do you live now? Married, kids?
Born and grew up in Ballarat, but now live in Camperdown with my girlfriend, with a baby due any day now

Q.2. Where did you meet your girlfriend? Are you nervous about impending fatherhood? Do you have your names picked yet?
Met her at uni 5 years ago now and now teach at the same school here in Camperdown so it's worked out well. Fatherhood can't be too hard- people have done it for thousands of years so surely I'll be better than average. I'm reading all the good fatherhood/ parenting books..Josef Fritzel has written a ripper- plus he's Austrian: so he must be a good bloke
No names picked yet- it's hard for teachers because every name you pick reminds one of us of a little turd we've taught before.

Q.3. When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A teacher

Q.4. What do you do for a living now?
A teacher

Q.5. Growing up what were your interests?
Actually didn't mind going to school, always had a great group of mates around me and really good family, always been a one-eyed Cats man with the NUmber 5 permanently etched on the jumper. Got into horse racing in about Grade 6 and loved it ever since.

Q.6. Any great sporting achievements we should all know about? What sports were/are you good at?
Used to be ok at footy, umpired 400 games and now started up footy again, love playing golf and wish I had the time to get better at it because I think I could be a single-figure handicapper given the time to play. Had a bash at tennis as a junior but hopeless at it now.
Me and the old man shot 54 points in a 4-ball once- that waas a ripping day- I was playing off about 30 and he was off 25, both hadnt played for months, and shot the lights out- almost went under par off the stick. Just happened to be a week before our 21st and 60th birthdays too which made it even better

Q.7. Image you could live any where in the World, where would it be and why?
Very laid places like Halls Gap, up on the Murray River, down on the Surf Coast- very much a country boy. Having said that, I've heard great things about Bermuda

Q.8. If you could swap lives with some one for 3 months who would it be and why?
Sam Newman- The old foss just wakes up in his docklands apartment, wanders down and has to choose between the Mustang or the Lambo, shows up to do a 3hr show once a week and just lives the life of a 20 yo

Q.9. If you won $1 million what would you do with it?
They say money doesn't buy happiness- but it's certainly a good deposit. I'd get a nice new house on a good space of land, maybe a few Par-3s in the back yard, stick a bit in savings- I wouldn't stop working though

Q.10. You have to step in as the next Prime Minister. What would you do to help Australia keep going forward?
What issues would you tackle? The education system is rooted. You've got kids with 56.00 ENTER scores getting into highly rated universities and getting jobs teaching kids who are smarter than they are! Uni's have to have higher cut-off for education courses, or entice people from other professions over to teach. I think Health is in trouble at the minute- there are people who don't want to go to the doctor because it costs too much- that's not how a country like Australia should work. I'm not into the "abolish poverty and war" crap- we're human, poverty and war are always going to happen so we should just manage it and try to stop ourselves slipping into it.

Q.11. What is your favourite sport, sports person and sporting moment?
Love AFL, loved watching the Cats win the flag, one of the all-time top sporting moments was watching Tiger sink that chip-in that rolled sideways and just dropped. Watching The Diva win the Cox Plate was also a great moment.

Q.12. As a one-eyed Geelong fan if you could have any other 2 players in the AFL playing for Geelong who would they be, and why?
Obviously Geelong needs some forward line help so BUddy and Fevola would be a nice injection.

Regal-Roller thank you for being our 1st interviewee. Now everyone knows a little bit more about you and this can only help as we all continue to contribute to this wonderful web site and especially the Joff All Sports Bar.

Cheers

KangaMick

I saw Pazman's post and I thought it was a bit rude in some of the things it said so I am glad it got taken off. Didn't see yours Nathan. But remember Regal-Roller has kindly allowed me to interview him and it's a bit rough for people to sit back and take pot shots. This idea was for a bit of light relief and the interviewee shouldn't have to cop flak from it, otherwise there is no point in doing them.

Knowing Pazman it would have not been pretty but normally his sense of humour appears misguided/misinterpreted

Thanks for the insight Kanga /RR maybe one standard question going forward could be to explain their  pseudonym

First horse I ever won a stack of money on when I followed him right through the spring one year. Backed him first up and followed him all the way to his 5th (?) in the Cox Plate but never came back the same

Pazman- what do you do for a living may I ask?? I ask because I'd doubt anyone wants to see you interviewed and you many not get the chance to tell anyone.

It is well known that teachers get a lot of holidays every year- and yet there is still a shortage of them. There are a lot of people whinge about the holidays- but if you want all these holidays why not be a teacher or stop whinging. Everyone has had several teachers teach them just about everything they know, although from the constant non-sensical dribble I'm not so sure you ever had a teacher- maybe you just picked up your broken English from others in your commune

Good luck with the baby - be good to have a year off on maternity leave.

It was interesting to hear you say that the education system is rooted. I am not knocking teachers but rather the union culture of the profession. Like you said the kids are smarter than their teachers who gain barely a high school pass to learn to teach. What profession deters performance based pay? A good teacher gets payed the same as one that goes through the motion?

Sorry Kanga - is this a "This is your life" style feel good interview or a bit of a questions and answer segment?

I think it's a great idea to get an insight on RR. The thing that stood out from the interview was how RR felt about his profession which he felt he would like to change but RR never really said how or what were the roots of the problem. Teaching is a very noble career but why has it gone so wrong and not attracting the best people? Could the Federation have something to do with bright school leavers staying away?

What job does attract the 'best' people?
I think that the majority of teachers do so because they have a passion for the subject they are teaching.

Life isn't perfect, and if all teachers were perfect then the students would be getting an unrealistic angle on life.

Just like their are bad bosses and good bosses, having a mix of good and bad teachers gets kids ready for life after school.
