Thought some of you would like to relive this great clash in the 2003 BMW, Probably not easily accessible to most so here it is.
My personal thoughts were that the jockey may have gone for Northerly a bit too early as he seemed to be under pressure a long way out. |

I personally think that he needed to go for Northerly early. Northerly was at least 5L slower, if not more, the clockwise way of going.

It was also Northerly's 3rd run in 3 weeks, and second 2400m race in succession, and in the 2400m Manion Cup the Sat before, he didn't run on finishing 5th at 1.75. He had raced Spring/Autumn then Spring, Autumn, Spring, Autumn. Northerly was at the end of his tether, and in fact retired after the run. 18 months later they unsuccessfully tried a 3 race comeback, but in that BMW he was a broken horse and it was remarkable he raced as well as he did.

Personally I thought it was thoroughly and utterly spine tingling.
People harped on about the horses being poorly ridden, they said the same after the Bonecrusher Our Waverley Star contest. It was two top class combatants putting it all on the line. Brilliant spine tingling stuff. . |

Epic battle, Freemason ran out of his skin that day. Didn't they break the track record? Many if's and but's, but a great pity he couldn't nail him on the line. |

Well said Mayor ,that is exactly what happened . Great race , that was the way Northerly went best, attack early and break their hearts , on this day Freemason pulled out an absolutely superb performance . They say this was Jack Inghams favourite race he loved to watch the replay of it.
