I like it too, the scenic run of the mill stuff, and the jumps. Don't like the G1 farces at all though. Small fields, pacemakers interfering with rivals, same band of megarich owners and breathless suckup media types telling us how happy Lord Suchandsuch or Sheik Whathisname is with his 50th G1 winner this decade, only breaking away to get a quick update from William Hill or Ladbrokes about how they've shortened the horse to 2-1 for a race in two months, which isn't really relevant given no English bookie ever takes a decent bet from anyone with an intellect above that of a walrus.

Voyager, handicaps have one purpose and one purpose only, Stimulate turnover. They do not define anything as far as champions or championships are concerned.

Then your definition of a champion is different to mine djebel which is fine no dramas there.
If you think any athlete not just thoroughbreds or greyhounds, should have their greatness judged by beating the same opponents time and time again, when eveything is equal then you have that option, but the best and most memorable athletes and matches or events have been when athletes have had to overcome hardship. Lohnro was a wfa champion, but the most popular of his wins was when he got knocked sideays and got boxed in and overcame problems to win a Australian Cup. That is the sign of greatness. The problem with that win is it was wfa. If that had been a handicap and he was carrying 58.5 and the 3yos(Elvstroem and Delzao) were carrying 52 or less, that would of made him a champion. It was champion performance, but it was just one run. His only other wins that come close are his George Ryder and that unforgettable Caulfield Stakes but again all at wfa. But as I said people have differing ideas of what a athlete needs to do to be classed a champion and good luck with your definition, but your definition means we have a champion every year and you ask any trainer or racing particpant and they will tell you champions come long every 30 years. |

I love Asian racing, Happy Valley in particular has more genuine tempo of any meeting in the southern hemisphere..think it's funny that Patsy has been beating his chest so hard lately and pointing out that euro's have strong stayers, not UK in particular but Euro's..I think we should also play that game and say that as Australasians we and Asia have the best stayers in the world..the Japan Cup being the best 2400m race in our part of the world is only ever won by the best..

Voyager, I am sorry to be blunt but you are talking nonsense. What other sport are champion athletes asked to over come hardships or handicaps that their opponent is not also asked to over come ?

Is Frankel a champion ? Yes - is he the best racehorse ever? Doubt it but then you cannot compare even different generations in UK racing. I saw a report the other night where they were running down Brigadier Gerard and ramping up Frankel on the margins they won by. Yet these days if they have a stallion prospect in the UK its all about pushing it out to win by margins and upping those ratings to promote a stallions career. Did they have pacemakers back in the day of former champs like Brigadier Gerard Mill Reef SeaBird? No idea.
You cannot compare him to Australian racing where if a champ horse is goingto win its eased up to the line (ala Black caviar) to try and avoid chance of injury and then you cannot compare either to the US and its dirt racing and say a horse Secretariat.
14 in a row is pretty special but in Australia there are quite a few that have won 14 in a row just they kept on racing as if they get that far they tend to be mares, geldings or from earlier eras where you race top horses as 4 and 5yos before going to stud. |

They do not show too many of the races.
2 things I found very interesting. No mention at all about his jockey Tom Queally, Apparently he asked for an appearance fee and channel 4 refused so he refused to front up. And watching Sir Henry when he watches the closing stages of a big race - He is very very nervy. Watch him watching Look Here win the Oaks and its the same as when he is watching Frankel win the St James Palace Stakes. |

Yeah I noticed the nerves. It's like Waller, he can't contain how much he cares about it.
I was disappointed with what they showed of his 2000 Guineas win. The replay would have done. The call gives me goosebumps every time. Don't blame them for not paying Queally. Could you imagine Nolen asking for a fee to appear on a Black Caviar show? He wouldn't dare. It's all about the horse and Queally should be just proud he was part of it. He was always strange I thought.

henry loved his horses. he wasnt just the trainer. they were all like his kids to him.
the filly, Midday, that won the Oaks and put him back on the map after awhile in the wilderness , he treated her like a favourite child. and he was such a wag ! some of his stories were gold.

Sired his first G1 winner - Soul Stirring - in Japan's Hanshin Juvenile Fillies. It's the race won by Vodka and Buena Vista.
Can't say I expected Japan to be the scene of his first G1 winner with all those horses in Britain. But it will be the first of many that's for sure. |

I read through this whole thread..some of the comments are hilarious in hindsight....
It’s a tragedy how patriotism can cloud ones view of a once in a lifetime horse.. Pierro! Imagine Frankel coming 3rd to Ocean Park in a race lol.. Great memories on here. |
