STYLISH WORLD ATTACK IN '92

MICHAEL LYNCH
Jul 19, 1991 – 10.00am
THE five country overseas raid planned for Australia's globetrotting galloper Stylish Century has been put on hold much to the chagrin of the horse's owner Dick "I'll Do It My Way" Monaghan.
The ambitious campaign, which would have seen one of Australasia's best racehorses pitted against top class opposition in the US, Ireland, England, France and Japan in a four-month global odyssey, has been axed because of trouble arranging connecting flights.
Monaghan, however, remains undaunted and is determined to put the same programme into action next year, but this time with better organisation.
Stylish Century next year will spend his Australian winter spell in the US, in the northern hemisphere summer, where he will be properly acclimatised and contest a series of lead-up races before tackling the first of his main targets, the 2000 metre Arlington Million race in Chicago.
"I believe his performance in the races like the Million, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and English Champion Stakes could mean so much to the Australian racing and breeding industry that it would not be fair to anybody -particularly Stylish Century -
if we couldn't give him every opportunity to perform to the best of his ability," Monaghan said.

Stylish Century, as well as being one of the best racehorses in the country, is probably the most controversial, thanks largely to Monaghan, a Gold Coast builder. Although he has owned horses for many years Monaghan has never had one as good as Stylish Century, winner of the 1989 Victoria Derby and $2.3 million in stakemoney.
But he has been the target of severe criticism for his insistence on doing things his way with Stylish, his habit of changing trainers the way other people change socks and for "interfering" in the training and programme-planning for the horse's races.
Monaghan defends his policy of "total involvement". As he puts it: "You only get one innings and I want to enjoy it. A horse like this comes along only once in a lifetime".
Monaghan admits, however, that Stylish has been footing a lot of the bills since he purchased the horse at the 1988 yearling sales. "In November 1988 I borrowed a lot of money to buy a development site on the Gold Coast to put up 18 units. Then interest rates went sky high. A lot of Stylish's earnings have been paying off the interest charges on those borrowings."
A legion of critics point out that while it might be fine and dandy for Monaghan to enjoy himself, Stylish Century may not necessarily concur.
The horse has had six trainers in his three year career - Noel Doyle at the Gold Coast, Bart Cummings in Sydney, Bill Mitchell in Sydney, Ron Gill at Caloundra and also in Melbourne, Jeff McCarter at the Gold Coast, and, since Tuesday of this week, Monaghan himself in Brisbane.
Stylish Century really hit the headlines in the spring of his three-year-old career (1989) after Monaghan took the horse away from Bart Cummings following a public row over the way he was running his races. Cummings, one of the most successful trainers in Australian racing history, said this week: "I think Dick's the only one who understands racing,"suggesting that if Monaghan could get his weight down enough he would probably want to ride Stylish Century himself.
Since then, horse and owner have had a high media profile through on-track exploits or off-track misadventures, like the time Stylish Century almost drowned in the equine swimming pool at Flemington last year when being prepared for the Melbourne spring carnival, or when he galloped riderless around the circuit in Tokyo before the Japan Cup last November. Stylish Century still led the field for most of the journey but was run down inside the final stages as a wall of horses swooped past. Victory went to rival Australian galloper Better Loosen Up.
Monaghan's decision to cancel the horse's overseas campaign will certainly mollify some of his biggest critics, many of whom argued Stylish Century was being asked to do too much.
Asked about the programme earlier this week, Cummings said: "The horse is one of the really few great fast stayers seen in recent years, but it (the itinerary) is the sort of thing you would plan for your mother-in-law or bank manager."
Monaghan declares that when next year rolls round, the horse's interests will be paramount "I'm doing this because I love it so much. If I was a billionaire I would do the same thing. I love being with Stylish at trackwork in the morning. I am very proud in a way that people get hostile with Stylish. For some reason this horse has captured the imagination. A lot of people seem to think they own a bit of him." *

I don't think social media would have made any difference at all to Dick Monaghan.  He clearly didn't give a rat's for what anybody thought back then so I doubt he would have been fazed by the opinions of twits and instagrammers.

It was his horse and he was entitled to do as he pleased with it - and so he did.

Wiki says he died of a spider bite but nothing about him in retirement more except that he proved an unexceptional sire.

I met Mr Monaghan and his wife at the 1996 Scone Horse week we had dinner a couple of times, lets just say he did not lack self belief.

I think he might be the last horse to run in both the Golden Slipper and the Melbourne Cup in the same calendar year  ... in fact he might be the only horse to do so.

Served very small books and of his mares were very ordinary, so two stakes-winners from about 60-odd to race wasn't too bad at all.

That era was what got me hooked on racing as a teenager. Stylish Century, Better Loosen Up, Vo Rogue, Super Impose, Let's Elope, Shaftsebury Avenue, even Prince Salieri, Dr Grace etc...

For all the older folk here, was there ever a time when so many talented horses were going round at the same time against each other? For me ever since then, it's just been individual horses that keep me as interested in racing as a spectator sport. Actually that's not true - there was the Sunline/ Northerly/ Lonhro/ Makybe etc era too. I think that was the last time there were so many equally talented horses competing against each other? Feel free to laugh at me!

Criterion and Sky High were two that were rattling around in my head but Sky High was 4 when he run in the Melbourne Cup and Criterion was 5.  The only other horse I can think of who started in both races was Sunshine Sally.

There may be more.  I packed up all my reference material and it would be quite a chore to dig them out to check .  It is remarkable that there are any at all.

I can't ever recall RS running in a Slipper , seen him win the AJC Derby , by the NZ stallion Chatsworth if I remember correctly , maybe sire not nominated at the time as was the ruling., could well be wrong though.

Yes. Triple Derby winner!

He defeated Strauss & Park Lane in the AJC Derby, Strauss & Captain Blue in the VRC Derby & Park Lane & Rocky Court (10 lengths x 6 lengths) in the QTC Derby.

Well done Grey Affair. That means Royal Sovereign was the first horse to run in both the Slipper and the Melbourne Cup in the same calendar year - and Stylish Century was the last to do so.

Possibly. I was just working from one of Peter Pring's books. Maybe there was a handy horse who wasn't quite good enough to feature in that book but still ran in both events.

Does anyone have a list of three year olds who have competed in the Melbourne Cup since 1957?
