It used to be simple (win a race worth this much, place in a race of this stakes level etc). Now it's at the discretion of the HK rating committee whether a horse qualifies or not.

Richard Callander

Connections of the new boom horse Kinane knocked back a motza for the gelding, but did they do the right thing?

QUALITY HORSE, BUT WHAT IS QUALITY WORTH?

Would you have taken $2.5m for Kinane?

You know Kinane, the three-year-old GELDING by Reliable Man who has had four starts for two wins and won prizemoney of $102,990.

I most definitely would have, but I suppose your answer would be dictated by your financial position, or how much you are captivated by the romance of the turf.

The offer was as genuine as the gold in the Royal Australian Mint and, if it had been accepted Kinane would have been off to Honkers.

There are 14 registered owners of the horse and my understanding is the two largest shareholders own close to 45 per cent between them.

I believe most of the syndicate had a hook-up on Friday, and they agreed beforehand that it would be one in all in, or one out all out.

My mail is the voting was not unanimous, but the ā€œdonā€™t sellsā€ won out and the horse will continue on to the South Australian Derby on Saturday week, May 9.

Or will he? I keep asking myself when you say NO to such an offer are there bigger fish to fry. Is he better off heading to the paddock now and looking to the spring and perhaps a Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate?

What will be his preferred distance? Is he a genuine stayer or more a 2000m specialist?

There are a lot of questions to answer moving forward.

Who knows, after the SA Derby he might be worth $4m. Then again he might get beaten and only be worth $400,000.

Win or lose a sale is always on the table for discussion.

But racing is a gamble isnā€™t it?

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Thanks Gay, a bit of "news" is always welcome in the Racing forum. Here's my reaction to the Fat Man's piece.

ps for Carioca: Mick Kent is a successful Vic trainer who's having a well earned spell overseas.

We know his form.  And why highlight "gelding"?

I most definitely would have, but I suppose your answer would be dictated by your financial position, or how much you are captivated by the romance of the turf. Well duh. (where's the roll eyes emoticon?)

The offer was as genuine as the gold in the Royal Australian Mint and, if it had been accepted Kinane would have been off to Honkers. Well duh again.

I believe most of the syndicate had a hook-up on Friday, and they agreed beforehand that it would be one in all in, or one out all out. That simply doesn't make sense. My mail is the voting was not unanimous, 14 owners so that's no surprise but the ā€œdonā€™t sellsā€ won out what happened to one in all in one out all out? and the horse will continue on to the South Australian Derby on Saturday week, May 9.

Or will he? I keep asking myself when you say NO to such an offer are there bigger fish to fry. Well if they knocked back a $2m offer they clearly have bigger fish to fry Is he better off heading to the paddock now and looking to the spring and perhaps a Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate? What difference would one more run make?

What will be his preferred distance? Is he a genuine stayer or more a 2000m specialist?  There are a lot of questions to answer moving forward. Well yet another duh, there'll are always questions about a young horse's distance capablity.

Who knows, after the SA Derby he might be worth $4m. The duh's just keep coming, why would a win in a race like the SA Derby increase his value by 50%? Then again he might get beaten and only be worth $400,000.  So a loss would reduce his current value by 700% - give us a break.

Win or lose a sale is always on the table for discussion. Tell us something we don't already know But racing is a gamble isnā€™t it?  Well why not end a total pish piece with an entirely trite finale?

To be fair one in all in one out all out means if they sell some of them aren't allowed to keep their share - it's saying they either sell 100% of the horse or nothing.

Also it's not a 700% decrease in value.. it's an 84% decrease.

Pure unadulterated Australasianism.

The rise in trip would not hurt him.

The rise in class might do.

According to my weather map ( Fox ) Adelaide has had 5 inches of rain this month, if that is right maybe Sydney to Morphetville is considered an arduous task over 2500 in the heavy, so Brisbane the obvious, the rain imo have put the " slows" on a derby run.

As I mentioned before! It has purely been a price ramp up! The ex trainer owns 25% . He would sell in a heart beat if that price was true!!

Sydney to Adelaide I doubt constitutes a rise in class especially given that warning is likely to miss.
