Well the bidding has started on the 25% Mustajeer share - how high do we reckon it will go?
Sitting at $250k for now. I'll take a guess at $600,000. Anyone else?

I wouldn’t be shocked to see it go for close to the magic million.
My estimated value would be around 650-700k though |

As an investor, I would say $300k at best... That's a $1.2m valuation for a 6/7yo gelding that finds maybe three suitable races in this country, in the next 12 months.
Hong Kong, Japan, Dubai & going back to Europe wouldn't be a factor for me.

I doubt that the return will be the motivating factor in the share sale. If you are wealthy, and it's on your bucket list to have a Cup runner with a chance this is it!

Personally if I was an investor (who had some knowledge of form) with limitless funds, I'd probably only go to $50,000 because I don't see him as a genuine winning chance and even if I did then I could back him for $50,000 and get the same if not more than my share of the prizemoney at 25% ownership. My guess of $500,000 is based on what I think Fiorente cost to purchase (2mil if I'm not mistaken-even though this horse is nowhere near his level.)
For $500,000 I could probably buy 25% of one of the 2 favourites except that Finche is owned by rich people so that would rule him out. But If I had true racing knowledge and was an owner of Surprise Baby, and was a 'battler' I am pretty sure that I would accept $500,000 for a 25% share.

A 25% share in Caulfield and Melbourne Cups prospect Mustajeer has sold to Richard Pegum for $320,000 through the Inglis Digital Online Sale platform.
Offered by Gaelic Bloodstock, Mustajeer - a last-start winner of the prestigious Ebor Handicap at York (pictured) - is currently rated $13 with TAB Fixed Odds for the Caulfield Cup and $18 for the Melbourne Cup. The Kris Lees-trained stayer joins a number of high profile sales through the Inglis online platform in recent months including Manaya for $400,00 and Set Goals for $321,000. Pegum said the opportunity to buy into a world-class stayer which is guaranteed a Caulfield Cup start in 10 days’ time was too good to refuse. “To purchase an in-form horse for a big race this close to the race, it’s very exciting,’’ Pegum said. “I’ve been able to buy many horses before but this is one of the most well credentialled imports I’ve ever bought.’’ Gaelic Bloodstock’s Phil Burns said: “Thanks to Inglis for getting the job done. The initiative, opportunity and professionalism involved in the entire process has been outstanding. “It’s been a seamless process as a vendor and we’re absolutely delighted with the result. “I’d like to wish the new owner all the best in this new investment. Mustajeer has provided us with so many amazing memories and I sincerely hope he can come out and win the two big Cups in Australia in coming weeks so they can enjoy the thrills we have enjoyed with him.’’ Inglis Digital Business Manager Nick Melmeth was thrilled with the outcome. “This was new territory for thoroughbred sales in this part of the world, to be selling a quarter share in a genuine Caulfield and Melbourne Cups contender, in early October, online,’’ Melmeth said. “The sale received significant international media coverage and I think that alerted a lot of people to it and as a result, there was widespread interest in the auction. “Congratulations to Richard on the purchase and thank you to Phil Burns for entrusting Inglis Digital with the sale. “We wish Richard and the existing connections all the best with Mustajeer in the Caulfield Cup and beyond |

You couldn’t buy a hair on SB’s tail for $500k. They knocked back some ridiculous money even before last weekend. |

Goodthing-
I did say that if they were battlers and/or had a knowledge of racing. After trainers and jockey percentages 25% of the MC 1st prize is around $900,000. If I owned SB I'd accept $500,000 now. Sure I'd own less of the horse but financially I'd be ahead on expected outcome. If I wanted to be in the same financial position I'd take $50,000 of the $500,000 and back him in the MC at $9. And I may have made a new friend in the new owner that i could race horses into the future with. As for the $320,000, Pegum et al paid way overs as was expected. Especially when i heard this morning that he felt the race he was best suited to was the Caulfield Cup. 25% of the prizemoney of the CC after training and jockey is about $600,000. Even if he was to win the CC and MC double 25% of that prizemoney is 1.5mil which means he is taking $5 odds for the double. The horse is gelded and not getting any younger. Even though I was away when Ebor was run and haven't looked at European form in depth yet, my early impressions are that he is only an outsiders chance to win.

You are completely missing the point kavg. To blokes like Richard Pegum the money doesn't matter whatsoever. It's the thrill of being involved in races like CC & MC. Same as Lloyd Williams, doesn't matter what the cost is, they just want to taste the victory if they can. Being a part of it is worth the price if you can afford it. Pegum certainly can.

As my dad often said to me, if you’re in racing to make money, then you’re in the wrong sport. It’s about the love of horses and the thrill of being involved.

Understand guys. But not much fun when you're an also ran. I may be proven wrong but I'm just saying that there may have been smarter purchases to be made.

The horse is here, the horse is on the market and it is in the race, at this stage, anything can happen of course. You've got Oliver saying how well its going... as others have said, the cost is kind of irrelevant (within means of course) the thrill of having a live chance in the Melbourne Cup is priceless.
Personally, I cannot see the thrill of buying a chance 3 weeks out, and claiming it as your own, but I've never been in that position to do it, so what do I know....
