Good to see this race revert back to its proper name as the Feehan Stakes for 2019 👏.

But what’s going on with the prizemoney of this race over the years?

It was a $500,000 race when Whobegotyou won it in 2009. Over the next 10 years it’s progressively been reducing & is only offering $250,000 for 2019 !

I thought Racing Victoria were trumpeting Spring prizemoney increases only a few months ago? Or was that just the VRC races ?

I’m not suggesting the Feehan Stakes deserves to be worth more than $250k, but just seems strange given the trend of inflated feature race prizemoney these days for this particular race to be going backwards in value.

It’s been one of the important WFA races in the Spring for over 60 years.

The honour roll is not great in recent years since it was switched to be called Dato Tan Stks, but when it was the JF Feehan Stks it was won by bona fide superstars like Rubiton, Better Loosen Up, Strawberry Road, Northerly, Sunline, etc

Maybe cause the old fella has passes on and the committee don’t receive any money from the estate?

Dato sponsored the race and named it after himself
His estate has now been wound up so the commercial agreement with the MVRC has now ceased.

“I’m not suggesting the Feehan Stakes deserves to be worth more than $250k, but just seems strange given the trend of inflated feature race prizemoney these days for this particular race to be going backwards in value.”

Next month the Valley will host the Inglis Banner, a restricted sales early season 2yo race, worth twice the money. Says it all really.

It's a shame since it's had so many champions win it to see it being neglected.

Coincided with the elevation of the Memsie and Makybe Diva to Group 1, and the Makybe Diva/Feehan switching dates.

The race definitely seems to have been short changed. Similar to the Bill Stutt/Moonee Valley Stakes losing favour to the Guineas Preludes at Caulfield over the past 20 years or so.

I think it’s also an auto qualifier for the Caulfield Cup.

I believe that Jim Conlan is trying to qualify Beau Balmain for the CC via the Feehan.

Yep that's right. If a horse wins the Feehan..they get a free ticket into the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.

WA horse Trap For Fools is in it. I think he can run well. The field is not great..no decent WFA horses plus a few stayers resuming.

We've got the winners of the The Underwood, Queen Of The Turf, Emirates and Blamey in there, I think its a decent field.

A horse who wins under WFA conditions. Just like for some reason people call a stayer a "handicapper" or "handicap stayer" or "staying handicapper"

Who are these decent WFA horses that should be in this race that aren’t?

You also have to realise there is the Chelmsford in Sydney on the same day, over the same trip, under the same wfa conditions, for the same prizemoney and both are a Gr2

There is nothing wrong with these nominations.

Agree with Tonto here. It’s attracted some really good noms this year.

I’m far more excited by this race than I was by last weekends Memsie Stales.

Will be interesting to see how Surprise Baby runs. Maybe a rough chance to place. Stayers can on the odd occasion run well first up at shorter distances.

Time will tell.
