It’s the wrong argument to be having anyway. What matters is looking ahead because that’s what NSW are definitely doing. Where will the MC be in 10 years time? Anyone who thinks the Cup hasn’t lost a lot of its appeal wasn’t around in its heyday . Winxmania showed one thing . Racing can still engage and excite the general public if you give them what they want. A true blue home grown champion they can follow. Not a fly in horse they’ve never heard of owned by some rich foreigner. International recognition is not worth much if you’re losing the people at home.

Don't worry Baguette we'll produce another Champion from Australia's pastures. I'm at present going through some records of Australian and New Zealand mares sent overseas (after an Australian breed produced the Epsom Derby winner). Very interesting work.

Mate not too many on this forum where around when 25% of Melbourne's population attended the MC in its heyday in the 1890's , however I do agree with wall-to-wall racing, now days everyday of the year, bar Good Friday and Christmas Day, racing has lost a lot of its appeal to regular racegoers, however those once-a-year punters who might attend during Cup Week still do attend not only for the racing but the social aspect.

The interest in the MC has decreased from the once a year punters, the question is that because of the increased number of internationals or just a change in society?

Probably both. Racing isn't what it once was in terms of public interest, but the lack of local successes doesn't help to promote the sport. I think most local racing fans find it hard to get excited about the Cup nowadays, so how are the once a year punters ever going to.

Not sure the once a year players would know a local horse to an import. Usually betting to a name/ jockey/ fairy tale story. Its the regular punters who have lost interest in the MC - almost impossible to line form up (not that all regulars do form these days either)

We are talking about a person who "ordered" her staff to put a "pig pen" for owners in the mounting yard at flemington without consulting OH&S, jockeys, trainers etc... cost around $30k and was removed without being used.. The lack of racing minds in the upper echelon of the VRC amazes me,

Sorry what was that about a pig pen? I missed that? Was she trying to push the sale of pork?

Wow....What a terrible look. Still, in marketing terms it’s better than spending $13,000,000 on a field that their so called opposition got for a $1,000,000

V'Landys calls out VRC with turf wars to hit TV coverage in springRacing NSW boss Peter V'Landys says the split in free to air television coverage on the biggest day of the spring carnival is an example of Victoria Racing Club's hypocrisy when it comes to interstate cooperation. The VRC's $100 million deal with Channel 10, encompassing all four days of the Flemington carnival and announced late last year, means Channel 7 will be left to dedicate its entire coverage to the new $7.5 million Golden Eagle on the same day. V'Landys has copped his share of flak in recent weeks – mainly from Melbourne – for what critics call an uncooperative attitude, with his new races like The Golden Eagle announced in direct competition with Victoria's traditional race days. "But Channel 7 will be doing the Golden Eagle and it will be in direct competition to Derby Day and this is the irony of the whole situation," he said. "They (the VRC) want to talk about the national situation, and what do they go and do? They go and sign with Channel 10, away from the national channel that we are using. It's only national when it suits them, and it is never national when they want to do things unilaterally." The Racing NSW kingpin – at whom VRC Chairperson Amanda Elliott fired a verbal broadside this week – said he wasn't objecting to the VRC's lucrative deal, just the criticism that Sydney racing should be the ones cooperating when it comes to spring scheduling. "I've very rarely seen cooperation out of Victoria," he said. "I think it is just another fallacy that they are cooperative, they always look after themselves first – as they should, I have no objection or complaint about that – but cooperation can't be when you pick and choose, it's fine to say to us we should cooperate but then they go and do the complete opposite." "In racing the first thing you look for is consistency and their arguments are very inconsistent." Sydney taking Channel 7s exclusive coverage means they have not only lured some of Australia's best horses and jockeys away from Flemington, it appears even legendary broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will be heading north to cover the Golden Eagle as well. McAvaney called the Melbourne Cup for Channel 10 from 1985 to 1988, before joining 7 on its coverage from 2002 to 2018. The lead-up to Flemington's four big days will all be shown on 7, with the network covering Melbourne and Sydney on the same day throughout the spring. Sydney's Everest is now scheduled on Caulfield Cup day with coverage dedicated to both races, but there must be some concerns from Melbourne racing officials that 7 is likely to be promoting the Golden Eagle two weeks out from the race. Racing Victoria-owned Racing.com's coverage will continue through the spring carnival from Melbourne with CEO Andrew Catterall confirming the broadcaster had secured a 'sub-licence' for the rights to the four days at Flemington. "Our job is the deep analysis and racing coverage," he said. "Our job is to serve those sport and racing fans that through the year bet more than once and that during the spring carnival really switch on. Our job stays the same and our race coverage through the year. We are covering Victorian racing seven days per week, and that is our point of difference." "Our spring racing coverage is every day for 12 weeks, that is live coverage from the mounting yard. That includes all feature days and all four days of the VRC carnival." By Michael Cox |

They will eventually have to push Melbourne Cup prizemoney to $20 million Pacific Pesos to get it to the same value to the internationals as it was during the mining boom.

I see Amanda Amnesia Elliott was on a sunday racing program in England talking about the 'disruption' of Peter V'Landys and his new races.
I can not believe some of her comments. This lady, is seriously deluded if she really believes some of the things she said during that interview. |
