Racing NSW boss Peter V'Landys says the split in free to air television coverage on the biggest day of the spring carnival is an example of Victoria Racing Club's hypocrisy when it comes to interstate cooperation.

The VRC's $100 million deal with Channel 10, encompassing all four days of the Flemington carnival and announced late last year, means Channel 7 will be left to dedicate its entire coverage to the new $7.5 million Golden Eagle on the same day.

V'Landys has copped his share of flak in recent weeks – mainly from Melbourne – for what critics call an uncooperative attitude, with his new races like The Golden Eagle announced in direct competition with Victoria's traditional race days.

"But Channel 7 will be doing the Golden Eagle and it will be in direct competition to Derby Day and this is the irony of the whole situation," he said. "They (the VRC) want to talk about the national situation, and what do they go and do? They go and sign with Channel 10, away from the national channel that we are using. It's only national when it suits them, and it is never national when they want to do things unilaterally."

The Racing NSW kingpin – at whom VRC Chairperson Amanda Elliott fired a verbal broadside this week – said he wasn't objecting to the VRC's lucrative deal, just the criticism that Sydney racing should be the ones cooperating when it comes to spring scheduling.

"I've very rarely seen cooperation out of Victoria," he said. "I think it is just another fallacy that they are cooperative, they always look after themselves first – as they should, I have no objection or complaint about that – but cooperation can't be when you pick and choose, it's fine to say to us we should cooperate but then they go and do the complete opposite."

"In racing the first thing you look for is consistency and their arguments are very inconsistent."

Sydney taking Channel 7s exclusive coverage means they have not only lured some of Australia's best horses and jockeys away from Flemington, it appears even legendary broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will be heading north to cover the Golden Eagle as well.

McAvaney called the Melbourne Cup for Channel 10 from 1985 to 1988, before joining 7 on its coverage from 2002 to 2018.

The lead-up to Flemington's four big days will all be shown on 7, with the network covering Melbourne and Sydney on the same day throughout the spring.

Sydney's Everest is now scheduled on Caulfield Cup day with coverage dedicated to both races, but there must be some concerns from Melbourne racing officials that 7 is likely to be promoting the Golden Eagle two weeks out from the race.

Racing Victoria-owned Racing.com's coverage will continue through the spring carnival from Melbourne with CEO Andrew Catterall confirming the broadcaster had secured a 'sub-licence' for the rights to the four days at Flemington.

"Our job is the deep analysis and racing coverage," he said. "Our job is to serve those sport and racing fans that through the year bet more than once and that during the spring carnival really switch on. Our job stays the same and our race coverage through the year. We are covering Victorian racing seven days per week, and that is our point of difference."

"Our spring racing coverage is every day for 12 weeks, that is live coverage from the mounting yard. That includes all feature days and all four days of the VRC carnival."
