The Vic season gets underway today with 3 competitive races at the Bool - a Steeplechase & 2 hurdles. The SA season kicks off on 27th Mar with a hurdle at Strathalbyn, whilst over in NZ they start off at Rivertown next month.

There’s already been a few trial days with last seasons stars like Zed Em, Self Sense, Bit of a Lad & Killarney Kid all back in work. Also lots of interesting newcomers too.

Patrick Payne & Ciaron Maher look to be building strong teams. Ciaron in particular has some interesting horses, including 2 UK jumpers - Yensir (who won his last 4 jumps starts in the UK) and Light Pillar (who ran 4th in the Queen Alexandra Stks at Royal Ascot last year).

Gai Waterhouse also has Goodwood Zodiac being educated, an imported stayer who has shown glimpses on form on the flat.

If anyone has spotted something from the trials they fancy let us all know.

I’m looking forward to seeing Patrick Payne’s NZ gelding (Ours) run in the Chase today, he’d be a likely Oakbank contender come Easter time.

Great effort by Maher to get Bit of A Lad to win first up with a huge weight.

Thought Lucques still has lot to learn with his jumping, but was still good enough to win. He is a superior stayer on the flat compared to that field.

Nice to see King of the Forest win for the first time for a few years.

He was originally trained by the late, great Guy Walter. There can’t be too many (if any) of Guy’s horses still going around. I think Jacquinot Bay is retired?

That festival killed 7 horses alone last year didn't it? I think his comments are a bit rich.

Exalted Lightning did beat Olympic Academy in the Adelaide Cup & again last Saturday. Very difficult to split these stablemates.

Days Go By is a very interesting runner too. French-bred mare owned by AJRA president Sandy McGregor.

Do SA have different qualifying rules?
Because I know in Vic you have to trial twice prior to jumping. Some of Grants have only had the one trial to my eye

Any ideas as to why they would take blood tests of all the jumps horses (and only the jumps horses) at Strathalbyn yesterday?

This is the second year.
Reason: To please the protestors who thought it was too tough to have the von doussa and great eastern two days apart.

Now they are 15 days apart. Then after the Great eastern is 8 days to the Brierly and after that 2 days to the Grand Annual.

The calendar is too cluttered because of the late Easter this year.

He/she is simply a lovely horse.

Admiring a photo of a horse in action is all that is needed.

Kalashnikov I think, headed to Cheltenham Wink

Gai Waterhouse had a few very interesting horses at the Cranbourne jumps trials this morning.

Kushiro - an unraced Japanese-bred 4yo with Gai Waterhouse

Goodwood Zodiac - an imported UK stayer

Just A Joke - a nicely bred High Chaparral 4yo

Compton - a 1 start maiden

Look forward to seeing how these guys progress over the season.

Ciaron Maher & Patrick Payne also had quite a few good ones trial today, including Big Blue (who was 2 from 2 last year & expected to measure up to the feature hurdle races later in the winter).

Killarney Kid is a very good flat horse, just keeps towelling up these lower graded horses.
Will be a good tough contest vs Self Sense and Bit of a Lad in the Galleywood

Here is what happened Sparticus:

This year's jumps racing season will be without one of its stars after the death of Monarch Chimes.

Monarch Chimes went amiss on the flat with 800 metres remaining in his 2800-metre steeplechase trial at Cranbourne last Friday.

Feature jumps day at Pakenham today.

Looking forward to the clash between 2 unbeaten hurdlers in BIG BLUE & LUCQUES in the MJ Bourke Hdl.

And one of last years star hurdlers in BIT OF A LAD makes his Steeplechase debut, taking on SLOWPOKE RODRIGUEZ & DONT BE SHY in the JEH Spencer Stpl.
