It is of interest from week to week umpires are abused, maligned and generally not respected, yet get to pick the fairest and best each year and 9/10 times are acknowledged for getting that right.

Make what you want out of that.

Always struck me as extremely weird the reverence Victorians have for the umpires player ratings. Hey, moron, you incompetent dropkick, please tell who is the best player - I'm so excited to have your opinion.

Did the Suns get much the same draft assistance that the Giants got?

They did. The Giants were just much smarter in how they used it, especially with who they got in as uncontracted players from other clubs (Campbell Brown, anyone?), and don’t have the Suns’ supposed toxic culture. But what are you going to do, it’s the Gold Coast.

To be fair, the Suns have been badly affected by long term injury to key players, which calls into question their injury management as well. Having said that, so have the Giants.

I think GWS will win.
I believe they have been running on 4th gear for the past 3 years.
They have a 5th gear.
It was always said that Leon Cameron was giving the keys to a Ferrari.
Today that Ferrari will go to that 5th gear.
They will have too much run.
They run and spread well, and you can expect them to also switch play around the back half, do a semi-circle, change wings. This kills a lot of time.
GWS also have a strong defence. Proven against Pies and Lions.

On top of this, they have goal kickers everywhere.
Matt de Bour, restricted Dusty Martin to only 15 touches earlier this year, and Dusty was losing the plot over it.
De Bour does it for the full game, he doesnt tire.

GWS match up well everywhere.
I honestly think Richmond will be kept to under 70 points today, and that is why GWS will win.
Im predicting a bit of a blowout and have taken $7.80, GWS to win by over 21.5 points.

Enjoy the game everyone.

Richmond to be up by 5 points on the siren to have Toby Green kick a goal and win it by a point would be the ultimate dream come true

Well didn't see that scoreline coming!

1 goal 6 at quarter time and a 6 goal margin - it was all over.

GWS managed to show no fight whatsoever, as expected from the "FIFO Lamborghinis".

A Champion team will always beat a Team of Champions!

I was at the Grand Final. Great day. Not so good for neutral fans though...too one-sided.

Back to Perth today. Long day ahead...Perth to Brisbane then a 1 hour 35 minute drop over and then Brisbane to Perth. It was cheaper this way by $150.

Go Tigers. YELLOW AND BLACK.

Those airlines are terrible.
Last year when the Eagles were playing it was cheaper to fly from Perth to Melbourne via Bali or Thailand than direct

I see Fox have just sacked Neroli Meadows.

I am all for cost cutting, but she was one of the better presenters and surely one of the many, ex-players who hog the majority of the salary budget on Fox Footy channel, could have been moved on!

I know of at least four rugby league "personalities", that should have ben given the shaft, before this talented tv professional.

It looks like Kelli Underwood is next, in the "cost cutting".

This might not relate to 2019 but would to AFL season 2020 if these initiatives were adopted in 2020.They must have plenty of time on their hands down at AFL headquarters in East Melbourne as some one has come up with these beauties...

A. Players should have the right to appeal an umpire's on-game-on ball free kick, somewhat like the review system in cricket. Just think how that would hold up the game

B. The half time break should be reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes. How ridiculous the line to the toilets and drinks / food would be that long no person would get back to their seat before the bounce of the ball for the second half and players need that 20 minutes to refresh and recuperate.

Agreed.  Both profoundly stupid proposals.

I have a profoundly stupid proposal of my own.

Much time is wasted because of the 'hit the post' rule. I say sink it.  If the ball hits the woodwork but still passes over the goal line then that should be deemed a goal.  If it hits the woodwork but passes behind the goal post then it should be a behind.  If the ball hits the woodwork but does not cross the goal line and rebounds back into the field of play then play on.  That goal square anarchy would be something to see.  A review would only be required to determine which side of the post the ball passed. whether of not it hit the post would be irrelevant.

(Come to think of it I would be perfectly happy if they removed the point posts all together.  Why should any team be rewarded for missing ?  That would raise the prospect of more draws and perhaps some sort of penalty arrangement would be required - if only for finals.)

It appears the AFL players aren't quite as dumb-sh1t candidates as are your more gifted NRL players:

Not sweet 17: Most players want 22-game season

Players are not entirely happy with the 17-game model the AFL has announced in response to the virus crisis.

We Humans are never Happy.   17 has to be better than 0.

I watched near to one AFL game in full once . Swans won the Final.

All about the area we were born.    Draws the crowds so has to be a good game .

Okay so the draw is out and we see action resume on June 11.

With AFL, rugby league, cricket and the international sports all in full swing, I am wondering what impact everyone thinks this will have on for the spring carnival.

AFL grand final on Cox Plate day, then the Cox Plate. And then we also have the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November and the next night the first rugby league state of origin.

Voyager if they pack the crowds in like the trains in Adelaide of the people going to work and then realising they were a few " carriages short " In Bloody More Ways than on, the spring carnivals in big trouble , it's gotta be the water.

Ok it's 2020 but whatever.

Richmond played Sydney today and they scored 7 goals between them.  For the entire match.  The AFL game has surely lost its lustre and viewing enjoyment big-time.  Dead

2ic. once again your knowledge on most subjects is certainly wanting.

If youre enjoying Thursday night football on the couch, youre not the only one.

The coronavirus has thrown the competition into chaos, but the one positive for the AFL is the TV ratings that continue to go from strength to strength across the country.

And footy fans are lapping up the new weekly Thursday night fixture, with Channel 7 recording a 34.3 per cent increase in viewers compared to the same time last year.

A comparison for the freeto-air network to this time last year which was Round 13 to 16 shows an impressive 11.8 per cent increase in metropolitan areas. Across the country the overall increase is 8.9 per cent with Sevens coverage reaching 6.1 million nationally over the past month since the resumption. The news is particularly good in Queensland, with the rise of the Brisbane Lions coinciding with a slump by NRL powerhouse the Broncos proving a bonanza for the AFL.

Free-to-air ratings in rugby leagues heartland in Brisbane has spiked 38 per cent with the AFL on Thursday nights and Friday nights comfortably outperforming the NRL.

Across both expansion markets in NSW and Queensland, the AFL is up 16 per cent in 2020 on its averages.

The GWS Giants first ever home Friday night match in Round 4 against Collingwood banked a national audience of 1.02 million, the AFLs sixth biggest TV audience of the year. Fox Footy is enjoying a 15 per cent increase across its three AFL platforms Foxtel, Foxtel Now and Kayo. Victorian clubs have featured prominently in the mostwatched games with Essendons upset of Collingwood last week rating an average audience of 338,000.

The previous week saw St Kildas shock defeat of reigning premier Richmond lead the way with 372,000 cumulative viewers.

Fox Sports boss Peter Campbell praised the AFL industry for keeping the competition afloat for its fans.

The AFL season has faced many challenges but one thing that hasnt changed is the love footy fans have for the game, he said. Our audiences have never been higher or more engaged, with many fans who normally sit in a crowd seeking out Fox Sports games, live and ad free during play.

What does audience in times of coronavirus have to do with attractiveness and enjoyment per se?

Given most of the AFL heartland is in lock-down it's no surprise whatsoever that people turn to the TV.

But if you enjoy watching a match with just 7 goals scored for the entire game you're clearly very easily pleased.
