Well that trainers son needs to extract the digit and get his license then. But hey, let the industry sit on its hands for another 20 years and give this blokes son more time to make life choices.

Totally agree that Daniel Bowman & Mitch Freedman are going superbly, and well done to them both. Let’s not forget that they were with Weir in the very early days when all Weir did was send ones down to the beaches who had joint issues. Theses blokes didn’t have to manage a stable of a hundred or so. The ex Weir employee chasing the license has been there through the thick of this Weir & McLean disgrace. If you think that if this person gets a permit to train and won’t have horses in the stable that will have connection to Weir and his cronies, you’re delusional. |

Hopefully, the stewards can put a stop to handing out trainers licenses to any Weir and MacLean employees until after the police investigation is complete.

Why would stopping Weir associates getting trainers licence be cutting off your nose ?

Not all of his employees are dodgy.
In fact, 99% were hardworking good people. Blocking them from further employment in the industry would be discrimination. Unless of course you had actual evidence of any wrongdoing. |

I'm sure the majority are hard working good people. Not sure "In fact" 99% are.

Well when the Police finish with their charges we will see exactly what percentage of Weir's employees were involved and I can guarantee there will be more than the 1% that your proposing.

Unfortunately just being associated with Weir is going to leave a stain on you for a while.

Limiting stable numbers could be a better idea than stopping people from obtaining licences to better even out distribution.

Exactly, you can't persecute the rest for the actions of a few, if the pass the criteria it's up to them to respect the upholding of their license, if they have learnt a few tricks it's best out in the open rather than hiding behind the skirts of the cheaters imo.

It’s a sport - surely the racing bodies can come up with whatever rule they like? Such as “one location per trainer, and trainer must oversee each individual horse” Salary caps in other sports are there to prevent a team getting too big. |

Of course there’s big business around it, same as many other sports, but the rules of racing can still be adjusted as needed. They give out trainers licences - surely they can make whatever conditions they like around having one.

Tighten the trainers legal responsibilities.
‘If’ a horse is found to be non compliant or test positive to a substsnce the trainer will be held responsible regardless of any act or omission of a third party. It may result in trainers beefing up security and lowering horse numbers. |

They don't " give out" licences per say , you have to show your financial with proof e.g. bank statements, clients , stables , horse numbers, where you will be located , insurance ,public liability, as well as an exam?? their are numerous things you need, it can be a real head/f..., and there are conditions, quite a few, and it's up to the Applicant if he wants to toe the line or not. |

When horses turn up to race and the "trainer" wouldn't know their horse/s in a line up there is a problem.

Can't quite remember the last time I saw a heap of horses in a lineup*.Let alone a trainer trying to identify his.
* unless in a paternity suit where a pregnant mare had to identify the culprit.

I was merely saying that if a group of horses lined up randomly in lower grade, these mega trainers would not be able to pick who is racing for them as they don't actually train them.
Clearly i was using a hypothetical. |

Trainer Jarrod McLean’s fight to save his licence by preventing Racing Victoria using police evidence against him rests with the Supreme Court.
McLean’s legal counsel Andrew Broadfoot, QC – a part-owner of Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance – accused Victoria Police of unlawfully providing RV with evidence gathered during stable raids which ended Darren Weir’s career in January. In order to maintain confidentiality over the evidence gathered by police, Justice Melinda Richards ordered legal parties to refer to “seized material” and “further information” instead of the actual specifics. McLean’s legal team is attempting to stop RV charging him based on information received from police or relying on it in any disciplinary proceedings. According to court documents, RV intended to charge McLean with administering a banned substance to a horse to affect its performance in a race. The Herald Sun understands the horse allegedly involved was a former top stayer, who retired several seasons ago and has since died. “The animal concerned died some five years ago,” Broadfoot told the court. RV also wanted to charge McLean, a Group 1-winning trainer, with possessing a prohibited substance and refusing or failing to give evidence to stewards, who opened a fresh inquiry following information received by police in August. McLean, who was charged by RV in February on matters relating to the possession of a jigger, claims Victoria Police must not disclose information about anything obtained in a search to third parties except during a criminal investigation. Victoria Police denies acting unlawfully. Barrister Paul Holdenson, QC, said police officers “engaged with absolute propriety” during the raids and the investigation was in the public interest to maintain the integrity of the racing industry. “Who wants to have a bet in the race when the participants in the race are cheating?” Holdenson said. Broadfoot said the passing of information by police to RV was “abuse of power and an unlawful disclosure”. Properties owned by McLean and Weir were searched in January before both men were arrested and released without charge. In McLean’s case, his Yangery property was searched by police using a Magistrates’ Court warrant granted on the allegation he had obtained financial advantage by deception. McLean maintains he is innocent on charges relating the alleged possession of a jigger. A Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board hearing on Monday was deferred to October 7 because of the civil hearing in the Supreme Court. |
