The guess there is that the original video taken at the stable that prompted investigations is ??inadmissable... like much of the stuff filmed in the greyhound cases... so the focus has gone elsewhere

Just as likely that the 'conducted electricity device' is an un-modified cattle prod. If they found it in the shed with the treadmills, they might be using it to get a max effort from the horse without the weight of a jockey.

Would need to know more about the gun. Could be anything from pest control to starter's pistol, used to make a loud noise.

The charges laid are everything that the sporting integrity unit has at their disposal. It'll be interesting to see what's left once they proceed to the courts.

The whole thing is so sad.  The view of racing thats going to be seen by the general public for one.  And , if its true, to think what has been gotten away with for years now.
The cruelty bit blows my mind, when I have always heard how he looks after his retired horses.Cry
I would think a gun would be held as part of the furniture in a lot of stables, but if its not licenced , thats trouble.  As to a jigger ?  Or Taser ? Both would be illegal wouldnt they, no matter which it is ?
If true, its difficult to think that he thought he could get away with it all.  Surely he would know they were watching him like a hawk ?  Its mind blowing , the whole thing.Angry

Surely no surprises here among the racing experts. 547 winners at a strike rate of 15.4% & a place strike rate of 39.1% over the past 12 months. How many horses must be in his stables to achieve that ? What one on one influence could you possibly have with that many horses under your control ? How could he be that much better than the average trainer who struggles to get a result ? You would think there must be something "inherent/ systemic" going on on top of his apparent master training abilities to get those outcomes

Yes, he is the only recent Australian trainer to win the Cup and at 100/1! I would rather an overseas horse win than a dirty Australian cheat.

So what if has 700 horses and a 100 staff, they will all find stables and jobs.

The authorities must have all of their ducks in a row to have simultaneous raids and with the Federal police involved this is going to be huge.

Could he even be stripped of the Melbourne Cup?

One of the reasons I pretty well gave up punting on Vic country meetings. I would study the form only to see a Wier runner @ $1.50. Could never work it out as the form rarely justified it. So would take it on only to see it waltz in. Had to be impacting turnover I would have thought

I stopped doing the form.
I just backed his horses, and bailed out if there was no money for them.

Not fool proof, but without doubt, profitable.

It is very sad indeed to hear of this happening in a hugely successful stable, albeit allegations till proven guilty,
His strike rate is impressive but not surprising as with a good reputation as a trainer will gather better horses to his stable, its not the quantity its the quality, plus his facilities are to be envied by any trainer.
All helps..

Yes and it make you wonder more about the ability of other trainers with big stables and strike rates

The involvement of the AFP implies something more that local. Unlicenced firearm would be Vic Pol only, a general racing doping irregularity would be RVL only...

Even the Police didn't get involved in the Smerdon case (as yet in anycase)..

A thought, if Mclean is indeed involved, could Ciaron Maher get dragged into it, from when Mclean was holding his stable??

From the article:

In a statement, police said the men were arrested for questioning as part of an investigation into suspected offences including:

  • obtaining financial advantage by deception
  • engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome
  • use of corrupt conduct information for betting purposes
  • attempting to obtain financial advantage by deception

With the central plank of this being financial crimes, fraud deception etc, I wonder will Triads or Russian mafia get a mention at some stage?
