Kohli and Rahane were the only members of Indias top 8 in Sydney without a first class triple hundred, both still have big double tons and their test class is undoubted, Rohit Sharma has 1, Murali Vijay has a big double to his name, only Prithvi Shaw hasn't got a double of their 10 best bats but he is only 19. Whatever they are doing it is obviously teaching them to play long red ball innings.
This series could actually be the catalyst to India dominating test cricket over the next few years as this squad is still quite young. |

I can't argue that - the depth of India is a very valid point and stark in contrast to our lack of 5 day players. I really think the main reason that they are #1, and will stay there for a while - is their change of attitude under Kohli - it's one thing to have the talent, but they are now the arrogant aggressors, they all value their wicket, and their bowlers are relentless - they have more talent, but they "out Aussied" the Aussies as well - whilst we were afraid to speak to them in a harsh tone, and the bowlers were afraid to even shine one side of the ball on their trousers with any vigor. This was a predictable result, but it is a huge psychological barrier broken for them - a series win in Australia was the Holy Grail for India and just makes every other team's job harder when they play them from now on, home or away.

So much talk around how India has over 1 billion people compared to Australia's 25 million.

Probably the difference is the quality of the back ups available, we replaced Warner with Finch for example. India lost the highly rated Prithvi Shaw before the series but were able to debut Agarwal who is highly accomplished in first class cricket. Vihari is highly regarded yet couldn't get a start in the first test, if Kohli and Pujara are injured instead of Shaw then their likely top 6 for the first test would likely have been Shaw, Vijay/Rahul, Agarwal, Rahane, Vihari, Sharma, with Smith and Warner jetted in ours would likely have been Warner, Finch, Khawaja, Smith, S Marsh, Head. Given it would have been 3-1 but for rain in Sydney and how thoroughly outbowled our quicks were I reckon it would have been a tight series, not 4 zip, Smith and Warner aren't guaranteed runs against quality fast bowling, just look at the South Africa series as an example. |

Might bring them around to a 40/60 chance Doc, do you expect those two to come in and play at their top? we are also a little brittle in the middle and in desperate need of a swing bowler, I'm not impressed with the third slip being so wide of the other two at times, just a mugs view . |

And it was far from good enough. The batsman have been poor but given their reputation the bowlers have been pathetic Bumrah and his mates have made Starc and co look like Prima donnas |

It's all relative Afros, and at that level, confidence makes a huge difference. If the two leading Indian bats are out, they need to replace them, and if they become a couple of cheap wickets, then the flow goes to the Aussie bowlers, and they get their tails up. Similarly, rather than having an S Marsh coming in at 2 for not many, and lifting the confidence of the Indian attack, you have Smith come in and score a ton - then the momentum and confidence flows the other way again. Yes we were well beaten, and it's hard to see any other result if they kept playing with those two team lists, other than India winning 2 out of every 3 tests, but the pressure on India would have been far different with those 4 changes - and they are BIG ins and outs. Again it is a hypothetical and assumes that Smith and Warner play to their averages, and the Indian replacements play like Australian batsmen ... ok maybe not 4-0, but certainly 2-1 Australia ...

You don't think it would make a HUGE difference Carioca? It's a hypothetical, but I reckon Australia would have started solid favourites ... especially if we had NO Marsh brothers in the side!

Would Smith and Warner be taking the new ball as well, Doc? The batting hasn't been good there is no doubt about that but the 'best pace attack in the world' have been thoroughly out bowled by their opposite numbers in this series, not 1 quick getting an LBW is every bit as damning as not one batsman getting a hundred.

They don't spread their wings in sport like we do and this is a concerted effort to stay no.1 at cricket, to them it's where the money is imo. |

Love Kohli and his crew, but I am glad that is over.
This has to go down as one of the worst Australian teams in history. The bowlers have done their best, but no batsman scoring a hundred and barely scraping 300 twice in the series, is not a great look. |

There is a way we might cunningly survive an innings defeat:
Sunday 6 January
Sydney areaCloudy. Medium (60%) chance of showers, most likely in the morning. Winds southerly 25 to 35 km/h turning southeasterly 15 to 20 km/h in the afternoon. Fire Danger - Low-Moderate Sun protection recommended from 8:40 am to 5:20 pm, UV Index predicted to reach 13 [Extreme]

Interesting that Shaun Marsh has stayed put at number 4, throwing the young bloke in in front of him, he has a better test record opening than at 4, why couldn't he move to 4, Khawaja stay at 3 and Labuschagne at 4 behind the 2 experienced guys.

I might be just losing my marbles in the heat but I am sure Ponting and Slater and anyone else who was near a microphone were telling the bowlers to bowl short, after they were bowling a good length on the first morning, before the drinks break. Couple of days later I read in the paper that Ponting and co are saying they bowled short too much.

Realistically they'll probably look to declare behind and hope to bowl India out cheaply and hope for the best chasing, 300 off 70 on paper would give them half a sniff, ironically this would be the only situation in a test where Finch would be great to have.
Most likely they get bowled out for 240 today but they have to do something to try win the match, a fighting draw won't do. As bad as the batting has been, when do the questions about the 'best attack in the world' start? Cummins the only Aussie averaging less than 30, India have 5 (Sharma, Shami, Bumrah, Ashin and Jadeja) Umesh Yadav is the only Indian quick with an inferior average or strike rate to the Australian quicks, the Australian quicks have also yet to get an LBW between them for the series, they seem to think that short pitched bowling is the silver bullet instead of the tried and tested bowl at the stumps. Some in the media are already talking about the lack of swing they are generating, maybe they need more sandpaper? |

If Australia can make 780 over 2 days they win. India wont survive 150 on the last day.
