Impressive win at Riccarton today. Part owned by Paul Gallen, Opie Bosson reckons he could be the best he's ridden. Sydney Autumn on the agenda.

As impressive as it was I’d hold my fire.
He got beaten by Embelish and Age of Fire quite easily in the Guineas and both have returned and got beaten

True Shrunk.

BUT he was an immature 3yo and showed enormous talent. Something must have gone wrong because he had 8 months off and missed the autumn. So he was probably given time to furnish and mature and looks like it may pay dividends. We'll see how he goes in a G1 in NZ and then see what potential he really has.

I'd suggest Kav is probably spot on there-the horse showed raw ability last year but had a few problems.  This prep he's done everything that could be asked and done it easily-of course he beat a below par field yesterday but can't do much more than win like that.

Big step up into a Sydney autumn but they'd be nuts not to try.

Thanks chaps. Watched the replay of his last two - very impressive. 32.39 sectional at the mile,  3-4 lengths quicker than the next nearest I could find on the day, altho' I only looked in the other two Group races, both of which were run in quickish time. Certainly worth watching. Is there a summer NZ target?

It's the 2018 chapter of ''Te Akau Fairytales'......for Gods sake they ran the first 1000 in 1-04, that's laughable. Kiwi riders no nothing about tempo, their stewards know nada about anything, so, time's over there mean SFA......how many overhyped Te Akau horses blurt when they hit our shores?.....they might fool the Kiwi's, they shouldn't fool us, those days are long gone.

Different era Shu, and Pumper is basically an Ozzie anyway, he was here so long, this new breed couldn't sit in a bus, hopeless is being kind,......so many are coming over, lasting a short while and going back, why young Bayliss and now Winona C want to go there is beyond me, the prize money is laughable, the weather? and the cost of living, to buy a home in AKL is same as Sydney, fuel is 30-40% dearer than here, crime in AKL worse than MEL, and wages are 40% less than here.....why oh why.....no wonder 700K of them live here, can you blame them.

Yep they trotted along early as you could see on the replay even without looking at numbers. Looked like a staying race to me. However that's even more reason to boost the performance of a backmarker usually. It's modern NZ form but they don't run sectionals and win like he has without ability. No-one's getting carried away on this thread that I can see.

I still think it beat bugger all ,every couple of years they seem to get a good one over there and put the biggest wraps on the said horse. Then when they get to aussie, they mostly seem to fall apart. But i have been reading the NZ racing sites and they all seem to say this ta akau oputfit knows how to promote.

The logical comparison both from a New Zealand perspective and a Te Akau perspective is Xtravagant. Made apparently good horses look second rate in the Shaky Isles but didn't trouble the scorer in three runs in Australia. The Shark looked very good, but the jury has to be out until he brings that form across and delivers.

I think in general the good nz horses measure up (Humidor, Shillelagh, It's A Dundeel, Sacred Falls). Xtravagant obviously didn't but I think him being a very temperamental stallion he just didn't travel and settle in rather than it being a true indication of his ability.

Fair call, especially since Aus trainers are able to improve the dregs of both countries by panels.

Similarly, HK trainers do extremely well with unraced kiwi produce, yet can't get the top section of our 3yo crop to go a yard.

Aus trainers are tops.

Top quality run after the month off.

I also think the Melbourne way will benefit if he finds his way down for the Cantala!

Surgery for Te Akau Shark, future uncertain

Brad Bishop

Eye surgery will delay the return of New Zealand cult horse Te Akau Shark to training, with Te Akau Racing conceding it is unsure when he will be back.

Last year's Cox Plate placegetter has been diagnosed with a rare eye irritation, which requires surgery that will keep him away from the track for an undisclosed amount of time.

Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis said the operation was necessary to ensure he was a chance of resuming his career under trainer Jamie Richards, having won seven times from 14 starts.

"Obviously this is a disappointing setback, but it is necessary that we operate now to ensure a viable future racing career for this wonderful athlete," Ellis said.

"While the prognosis remains guarded, we are hopeful that Te Akau Shark will return to the track in due course, to again display his talent and that 'wow' factor that he is so well known and loved for."

Te Akau Shark's problem was discovered while spelling in Sydney, but after initial management, advice was sought from international experts who recommended surgery.

"Whilst spelling, we further investigated an eye irritation of Te Akau Shark's that we have managed successfully," Ellis said.

"Expert international equine eye surgeons, together with our Sydney veterinary team, have decided it is in Te Akau Shark's best future racing interests to undergo an optic implant surgery.

"His issue is a rare one and the procedure has been scheduled for this week."

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

A real shame. Does anyone know what they are talking about - "an optic implant surgery"? Sounds to me like he will lose the sight in one eye.

Could be similar to cataract surgery in humans where they normally replace the lens with an artificial one.

Yes, so disappointing and an unusual condition at that.

Some years ago worked as an agent for Hyperion Thoroughbreds and was asked to market a yearling at a stud near Braidwood in NSW, only to find he appeared blind in one eye.  No deal done.

No such thong as optic implants in those days, and wonder about the likely success rate of surgery these days.

Was Roy H running the Hyperion show then ? I was working with Roy in about 85 sending a few up to SING......Roy was the best business partner I ever had, his honesty and friendship I miss to this day. I remember when Hyperion kicked off in SYD, a few of us were driving St George cabs, about 19- 74-5 or thereabouts......they were arguably the best syndicators ever.....IMO.

That's around my time too Bonjour, however neither of the two principals in my time were named Roy H.  One went on to be a well known NRL player agent.

Maybe just a timing thing.
