Got to give credit how he dug in. Though 100m out that he would be run over but reckon we he saw them coming he found a reason not to let them pass him. Tuff win !

BLAIR HOUSE to beat LATROBE/SHILLELAGH/DOUBT DEFYING for me.
Might have something the place on DOUBT DEFYING who is in best form.

The horses are less hardy these days. Need to race less often, longer space between runs. That's why we have more G1s. Do the math. It all adds up.

I think if you like Extra Brute then Mickey is worth a couple of bucks eachway...have taken $41.00, not much damage done if he flops |

It just makes me laugh when I hear trainers or owners or media types say we should cap internationals. As was stated before the Cup this week, and again by Shrunk, in the Melbourne Cup thread, the field for this years cup would have been less than inspiring, if they had not shown up! |

You have a middle testicle? ps an old and to this day huge mate of mine only had one testicle, and that attracted rather than turned off prospective lady friends - after word got around. He and his missus later had five children proving, as he'd later say, that one ball does it all. Please don't thank me for sharing that with you all.

Putting a lot of trust in Dazzling Darren here but I am going to assume Extra Brut has thrived since the Derby.
He is by far the best horse in the race. |

Yep. Appleby said they had little chance of beating Benbatl in the CP let alone Winx.
$375K for third there V $1.2M win tomorrow, which he should do against that lot.

We'll have a new Cox Plate winner next season. I'll bet my middle testicle he backs up into this.

Thanks Speed and don't for a moment doubt what you've read, even if I agree re Latrobe and query the Blair House info.
In any event it hardly changes the scenario: without them the field is ordinary and will continue to remain so in the future imo. Over to others. |

Hasn't there been talk the last few years that Euros should target this race for the prize money, rather than the Cups? Surprised that it's taken this long.

Latrobe wasn't ready for the Cup.
Blair House was kept out of the Cox to run here as they thought it was more winnable.

In truth the race has been relative rubbish for many years with a field mainly comprising beaten Cox Plate runners or a final blow-out for Melbourne Cup contestants.
I presume (without actually knowing) that Blair House is running after his 2nd in the Caulfield Stakes because of a setback that kept him out of the Cox. And Latrobe hasn't started since his run in the 2800m Irish St Leger so (without knowing once again) must have had a problem that precluded him running in the Cup or the Cox. Bottom line: without them the race would be relative rubbish yet again, just without the Melbourne Cup hopefuls having their final (Bart Cummings speciality) final hit out. |

Shillelagh is the interesting runner for me. Blair House is too short in the markets, if Shillelagh can get a nice sit and then have the last run at them she can figure. Not sure if the 2000m will dull her turn of foot. This is always a tricky race and an upset wouldn't surprise.

To be honest Brudder, I could not care less about the owners or trainers or jockeys who complain that overseas horses will continue to come over and win our races.
If you want to support the racing industry, by buying speed bred horses, for a quick two year old return, there for, pushing the breeding industry towards a certain breeding model, then you deserve to not have a runner in the cup, or the derby or metrop or whatever the middle distance staying races are. The last few Mackinnons have seen Tosen Stardom, Gailo Cho[p and Side Glance win. None of them were bred here, so it looks like NZ and Australian connections could not care any less about this race, and if that is the case then good luck to the overseas connections like Saeed and Charlie Appleby, etc. I can also guarantee you that if this spring is any indication and we see more sprinter milers like Home Of The Brave, Jungle cat, Spirit Of Valour and others come down and start winning our sprints and mile races, then it will prove to our owners and breeders that they are doing a f#@king terrible job, when it comes to growing the quality of our racing stock. But hey it has all been said before, and nothing has changed. Lets hope Fiorente and others can develop a good stallion record! |

I think if the stakes were raised to those levels you will get more international entries who will come and make the race not winnable for Australian based horses. Given that there is no open Breeder's Cup turf race for most NH horses will opt to try the Breeder's Cup Classic over the 1 1/4 mile distance on the dirt - but the stakes of that are US$6 million. Really, the race was an *institutional* lead up to the Melbourne Cup and should of been left in its place. Tomorrow's race will bring out usual threads on the list like "How far would of Winx won if she was in the race??" Thanks4Coming |

I would go the other way T. I am not usually behind the VRC with their bullying tactics for spring and their single mindedness for their own carnival, but add 2 million to this, and make it the wfa championship to rival the Cox Plate. Winx has saved wfa middle distance racing in Australia the last few years, but when she departs our tracks, we will be left with a very ordinary lot of wfa horses. Just on this race, are we thinking Shillelagh can run the 2000m? |

If it draws another field like this next year I would strip out 80% of the prizemoney and reduce it to G2.

How many of these would have even been allowed to run in the Cox Plate? I'd think maybe only BLAIR HOUSE and LATROBE would have been guaranteed a run. Naturally, Extra Brut is the late addition.
This race was moved to encourage Cox Plate runners to back up, as it was losing it's zest as a Melbourne Cup leadup race, with the Internationals taking over that race. Now it looks like a lead-up race to the Sandown Classic.

There is about 7 horses that were being aimed at the Mackinnon that have been injured in lead up races. These things happen.
