Absolutely gelatihouse, with Winx, Happy Clapper and Humidor out we have absolutely nothing over 2000. At least throw Hartnell in.

It's a shame Benbatl didn't back up and Humidor fell away but it still holds some interest with Blair House and the Irish and VRC Derby winners. I would have liked to have seen The Autumn Sun here given they think it will get over more of a trip. Others missing Unforgotten, D'Argento, Homesman.

Also I thought Johannes Vermeer and Rekindling were supposed to be aiming at this first up? I wonder what happened to that. What a waste that they both missed autumn and now spring. Almandin might have been an interesting fresh runner. Perhaps he has been retired.

The theory given that moving the LKS Mackinnon Stakes on the final day of the VRC Carnival would attract many of those who where involved in the early spring events and extend the activity of the Cox Plate entrants has backfired with this rendition.

I think the real move should of been to leave it on the first day and give the winner automatic entry to the Melbourne Cup.

Thanks4Coming!

The Mackinnon Stakes was already a Melbourne Cup excemption race but once it was moved to the final day of the carnival...the race lost its excemption.

Yet there are trainers wanting more races with the winner guranteed a start in the Cup....well they had one (Mackinnon) and the VRC moved the race.

The VRC should of just left the Mackinnon in its original slot on Derby day
Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

It's in the right spot now and most years it will draw a far superior field to a derby Day MacKinnon.

I can't even imagine how bad the MacKinnon would be this year on derby Day. What would be in it?

I can never understand why the VRC doesn't make more of the Matriach Stakes.

Australia needs a decent distaff beyond 1600m .  In fact I reckon it is the biggest hole in the national pattern, although it would be altogether better to run it on Turnbull Stakes day than up against the Mackinnon or swap it with the Empire Rose (which only undermines the potential of Cantala mile on Derby day).  On Derby day, a crack filly might even contest it enroute to the Oaks rather like what they attempted to do with Amphitrite this year.

A good mare coming through the Matriach on Derby day could either back up into the Mackinnon (or even come back to the mile for the Empire Rose) or take a week off before the Sandown Classic.  Nice progression.

I don't know what can be done to fix the Mackinnon.  The problem could be that they tried to fix the Mackinnion but because they have changed the nature of the Cup the Mackinnon has become a loose end.

Maybe the race is just past its use by date.  The Caulfield Stakes and the Turnbull seem to be growing in stature because of their relation to the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate but the Mackinnon, despite a $2,000,000 purse is going nowhere.

We have enough 2000m Group1 WFA races in the Spring don't we ?

Once upon a time, I know we had a 'topical tips' thread but it seems to have vanished so:
