Keeping it topical the white filly Utzon makes her debut in the opening race on the back of her trial win on Monday at Cranbourne.  So do the horses placed behind her (Lady Cornelia and Feign).  But another winner at the trials on Monday was Belinda Simpson's filly Ruski who beat Magnicity in a significantly faster heat (46.17 v 46.91) and has drawn gate 5 while Utzon has drawn out in 11.

I reckon there will be a push for the white filly (colour, breeding, high profile stable) but Ruski could be the better placed.

Well performed Dubai galloper Comicas (USA) makes his Australian debut for Charlie Appleby in Race 2.  He has been gelded.  He was the runner up to The Tin Man in the 2017 Golden Shaheen and is resuming from his Meydan campaign earlier in the year where he won the Group 3 Borealis in January.

Another interesting arrival is the Japanese bred Fierce Impact who was a Randwick winner at his second Australian start back in May and who resumed with a strong finishing second at Rosehill.  They have taken the stallion chain off him suggesting he may be a more settled beast this time around. He is trained by Matthew Smith who gets most of his winners in the bush.  No rider engaged yet.

Fastnet Tempest accepts at both Caulfield and Randwick, Williams engaged for Caulfield, McEvoy for Randwick.  The horse has a slow track win but is 5/16 on Good tracks.  The races are worth much the same money.  Not sure where they will go.  Caulfield ?   Randwick is likely to be borderline heavy.

Good move by the blue team to travel Hartnell down for the Toorak imo, 10 horses on the min and 4 half a kilo of it , racing well and worth a shot at the stumps , this race use to get you into the CC , don't know about now though.

This is one of the best Caulfield Guineas meetings I have seen.

The overseas horses all add some interest, even in the Weekend Hussler.

Godolphin should have a strong hand in the Toorak and Caulfield Stakes, and the gallopers in the Herbert Power are all hopes if they have settled in well.

The Caulfield Stakes is a very, very good race, and I agree, Hartnell does look well placed in the Toorak.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

Very true.  The last do so was Cole Diesel in 1989 (Leilani, Galilee & Tobin Bronze before that, and others further back).

It is an outstanding meeting, but then it always has been and it has changed very little over the years.  Obviously bringing the 1000 Guineas back to Guineas day has been a major recent change otherwise the card has been remarkably traditional.

I would go so far to say that it clearly rivals Derby day from the racing aspect.  The only thing it lacks is a Group 1 sprint.

I remember when showday was guineas day ( 95% sure) for the fillies and the had a jockeys invitational on the day too, Joking ( by Todman ) ridden by Ross Cherry W.A. was one I thought of , it gave show day a big lift, may have been a public holiday as well.

The Invitation Stakes and Underwood Stakes were always on Show Day, a public holiday until it was Jeffed in the 1990's.  The Invitation morphed after many name changes into the Rupert Clarke Stakes.  I am not sure about the 1000 Guineas.  In my memory it was traditionally on the middle day of the Caulfield meeting between Guineas and Cup Day.  but it was originally run on Caulfield Cup day.

Spot on.  The Coongy used to be on the same Wednesday meeting also.

In 1968 when Joking won the Invitation Stakes there was a 8 furlong 3YO fillies race called the Heath Stakes (later replaced by the Tranquil Star Stakes) won by Kerry Mist.

Great days racing. Caulfield Stakes helped by Winx scaring away some that would have gone to the Turnbull. There are probably too many G1 2000m races at this time of year anyway.

Meets Shillelagh 1.5kgs worse than in the Epsom. She finished with a wet sail.
But my dollars would go with Hartnell as well.

The Caul Stakes is a ripper. Race of the season so far.
Pick that winner one out and you are doing well.

I started with nothing and still have most of it left

Strong early support in the CS for the Epsom horses. This surprises me a little- Hartnell was beaten at WFA previously by a couple of these before giving d’Argento and Unforgiven weight and a beating. Those two now have to go up to WFA and will probably settle in the back half.

Homesman and Humidor both going super. Will probably have a little on each and enjoy what should be a great race.

BIG day for DK WEIR coming up... it's definitely a target meet. We were down the beach yesterday and saw about 30 of his horses that all looked super happy.

I'll be following all his horses with intent. Should get some good odds to with a few of them.

Very happy with $7 for UTZON in the first and $9 for WEDGETAIL from the McEvoy yard - gee they've got some very nice types making their debuts over the next few weeks. He's got his hands on some very nice prospects indeed. Still, they have to do it on the track but I have a feeling he'll be in the winners circle a few times this spring.
I've smashed these 2 as they both looked great in what I've seen on their trials. Horror draw for UTZON but horse does have some serious ability.
WEDGETAIL will no doubt be better over further but I've heard that this colt is very forward and if they go crazy, which it looks like they will, he can certainly come over the top of them.

VOODOO LAD looks bet of the day. Got $5 boosted odds, that'll do me nicely!

Got the early $21 for GEM SONG in the Guineas. If the fav or NATIVE SOLDIER are vulnerable at the mile then I think GEM SONG is the one that's way overs and looks ready to run a cracker. I'm very surprised to see $20 for TAVISAN??? Did it lose a leg or something? And I've got a heap of multis into OOHOOD who I really like. I can't jump in at $1.90 for THE AUTUMN SUN tho. That's way too short imo. Think you should be getting closer to $3 than $2. Looks a great race tho and I'm keen to take on the fav. Some very good value elsewhere, just need to get that multi crackin!~

What a great race the last is to have a bet in. Looks to be 6-1 the field! I'll be saving on both of Weir's runners but very keen to have a decent crack at LORD FANDANGO here. He was pretty good 1st up carrying 60kegs in the Benalla Cup to go down 1/2 length. He actually won the previous years' Benalla Cup 2nd up and then won this very race 3rd up, over 2400m. So he looks to have come back well and I'm hoping he peaks 3rd up, like he did a couple of preps ago, and wins this years Caulfield Cup! At $10, he's my best each way all day. Giddy up!

Great thoughts Kingy.  Gives us plenty to think about.

I went and had a look at the trials and Utzon was very impressive.  Ruski was encouraged to win her trial but Utzon was under a hold and looked very tractable.  Good gate speed too, which she will need from the wide gate.

besides, I love an omen bet Wink

I’m on Tahitian dancer ew at 101s and also 51s all in for 1000 Guineas

Reckon she will run a great race been set for this, she might be a bit underrated

Will love the 1600m

Good luck to all
