if the Qld government doesn't come to to the table then I would imagine an exodus of talent and horses leaving the state. Lets hope the united front stays together and gets a better deal for everyone

Leading thoroughbred outfit Aquis has thrown its support behind the Queensland racing industry, guaranteeing all Queensland-based runners at the Canterbury night race meeting this Friday (26 October) and Royal Randwick this Saturday (27 October) will receive a financial return for their investment in the industry.
Racing NSW and Aquis today announced a minimum payment of $1,000 for all starters not finishing in the first 10 at the Canterbury and Royal Randwick meetings. Aquis will fund the initiative for all Queensland-based trainers who qualify. Aquis CEO Shane McGrath said the company was supporting the initiative to assist Queensland trainers, breeders, owners and jockeys through the planned strike action. "We're pleased to be able to partner with Racing NSW and provide this support which we hope will be taken up by Queensland participants racing for the excellent prizemoney in Sydney," he said. "We appreciate these are difficult times for everyone in the Queensland industry and want to do our bit to ensure people in the industry can continue to earn a living while the situation is being resolved." "By guaranteeing some prizemoney for all Queensland runners we hope to give local trainers and owners the confidence to head and south and know that they will be coming home with something." The new incentive means horses finishing 7th to 10thwill receive the standard $3,500 in unplaced prizemoney for Saturday meetings and $1,500 for Friday nights. Runners placed 11th and beyond will receive $1,000, with Queensland registered runners being provided by Aquis. Nominations for both meetings have also been extended by one hour and close at 12 noon (Sydney time) on Monday 22 October 2018. These payments are in addition to travel rebates for Friday night/Saturday metropolitan racing announced by the Australian Turf Club. |

This is an intriguing situation.
Due to the multi jurisdiction of racing income, I would assume, that most queensland punters will just transfer their betting to Melbourne and Sydney, and there for, the betting turnover, which is what the strike is trying to lessen, may not be affected. Saturday will be very interesting, and I am sure this will be the first time most of the politicians even look at racing, and there are no meetings being conducted. However I do agree, that it is fantastic to see the participants all get together on an issue. |

Can't see the adversity to trainers, Trackvwork riders vets associated with the training of the horses. The pain comes with innocent people who work at the meetings catering staff, transport companys , supply chains, barrier attendants etc most of those will not see a cent in the actions outcome .I hope when an outcome is forthcoming they will be compensated by those who gain an advantage. Opens up a legal nightmare.
Personally as a tradie and someone who has been involved in strike action before our industry leaders could of inflected pain in a way with less innocent casualties occurring, let's hope Saturday and Tuesday go ahead and on outcome is reached beforehand. |

Owners also lose out, short-term , maybe a course invasion just before the first race on race day would of brought about more publicity to the cause, and a more personalised and socialised front established. Media would scurry from everywhere, widespread exposure, national news and a massive party on course after to bring people together. Bookies could run a book on the numbers arrested and still make a buck for the day.

Great work by Cameron Partington and almost 100% support for the boycott. Need the press to jump all over it now.

These innocents need to support the industry they make wages from. The government need to hear their pain. It will be worse if the whole industry fails |

This tax shouldn't exist to begin with but if the state governments have to give it back to the racing industry at least they might not bother to raise it at a later date.

The QLD government should do nothing and wait this one out The GST is not kicked back to the people who raise the GST revenue so there is no reason in principle why this new consumption tax should be kicked back to racing If no QLD races are run then the punters will just spend their money on other things and the government will get it from increased GST revenue that results As for the punters well most this time of year will be OK with betting on the Victorian spring carnival and ignoring QLD racing anyways If QLD racing should have a gripe with someone it is TABCORP who lobbied for this tax and got it put in place. The state governments would not have dreamed it up by themselves

It's not even similar to the GST so why compare it?
NSW and Victoria are distributing it, and their industries need it less than ours. And no.. they'll probably gamble it on other states racing, which the QLD government only gets the new POC tax from, none of the huge amount of tax they collect on Queensland racing. Sure the Queensland Government could ignore this and do nothing, but the QLD breeding/racing industry is on life support right now, there's going to be a pretty big exodus unless prizemoney improves, which is fine, if the Queensland government is happy with that it might only be a couple thousand jobs a year they lose, but they'll lose a lot of votes over it.

Just to clarify what amount of the POC is being given back to the industry in other states. NSW and Victoria proposing approximately 20% with a "guarantee" that the industry will be no worse off than prior to the tax. Similar "guarantee" in WA with the initial amount going back at 30%.

NSW actually said 40 million of an expected 100 million, so about 40%, with a no worse off guarantee. Again, their industry appreciates it, but it already had a strong base. Racing in QLD needs the support far more.

Bonjour and Linghi. Both of you suggestions are great ideas. We will all need to campaign against these people at the next state elections. And action aimed at MM will definately get the government to get their act together.

Well from the average punters perspective it doesn't really matter how the new loot is split - they are going to be paying the lot regardless. Why should punters get gouged more ? No one really believes that this new tax on Corporates wont just be passed on to the customers (punters) do they ? Every big business passes on any cost - the Corporates will be no different. Expect sharper pricing & a more focused/less generous promotional offers going forward. The other issue is the racing industry is a bottomless pit - did Queensland get the benefit from the race fields legislation a few years back ? What happened to that cash? I'm betting in my lifetime I never hear a state racing body ever say they have enough funding. Lots of industries out there suffering.

Even the NSW situation is a shonk. Govt collects an extra 140million each year - gives 40million to the racing industry to keep them happy - & keeps 100million for themselves. And makes out they are doing everybody a favour by doing it. Blatant tax grab - which will be at punters expense. Then they go & put on new multi million $ races. I mean fair dinkum - we cannot be that stupid surely.

What you are saying is right but timing. We have just came out of a period of no racing which means the people you talked about had no income at all not just one day but for nearly 2 weeks.Yet we now have a dry period where interest in horse racing is high and your going on strike please. You may not like Hinch but at least eagle farm is on the way which is much better than when furlong Dickson was racing minister closed it down with no money t reopen it.
