The Queensland racing industry is ready to take strike action on two of the biggest days on the Australian racing calendar over lack of funding from the Queensland Government

All sections of the Queensland industry are incensed by the Palaszczuk Government’s blatant money grab from the newly introduced point of consumption wagering tax.

Queensland introduced a point of consumption tax on October 1, taking 15 percent of wagering revenue from bookmakers and wagering operators generated from bets made by Queensland based customers.A similar POC tax will be introduced in NSW and Victoria from January 1 on much lower rates of 8-10 percent - but that is not the major issue upsetting the Queensland industry.

The key Queensland thoroughbred racing bodies are incensed that virtually none of the 15 percent take from the new tax will be returned to racing, unlike the NSW and Victorian models where the bulk of the money raised will go to the industry.

I'd love to hear the qld governments take on this - grossly unfair money grab at a time when qld racing really need some help

Would be a very smart move strike on Melbourne cup day not. This is one of the biggest attended days and the Brisbane race club make a lot of money out of it.Perhaps they should have gone on strike when they closed Eagle farm down and did nothing to reopen it but wrong party in power then.My understanding is that the current Alp lot  have given Qld racing money to keep it going as it has nothing else going for it no money and a racetrack that needs renos badly and is over raced.

I went on strike from betting on QLD racing years ago and have never looked back

Their whinge has no justification anyways.  Money collected from any consumption tax should go into general revenue.  NSW and Victoria racing are lucky if the governments have agreed to kick the money collected back to racing

In any case punters are better off if no money is sent back to the "racing industry" as it means the racing people won't agree to go along with any new taxes in the first place

Had to happen.
Government Vultures have been circling for a long time .
There will be many conflicting views, but one thing for certain ,   It isn't good for the Gambling Dollar.
Mr V'landy has to get his credit re the Everest but in his efforts to kill everything except tote betting , Increased Tax is his reward.
( Charging for his product YES , very fair .    On Turnover NO , and from now we pay the price.)

On strike Cox Plate day and Melb Cup Day in Qld .    That will hurt greedy Governments .
There will be some interesting opinions.

I thought "geez, this is a big deal" for a second but then remembered it was QLD and half the race days would've probably been called off due to gelatity track conditions anyway

Well put ...      When will they realise that Racing is near the top of our Industries.
All they do is strengthen Sports betting and send so many off shore.

A great deal of the problem with Queensland racing is simply to many race meetings in the bush. There must be 10 this Saturday compared to say Wa which is of comparable size which has 3.Victoria and Nsw which are smaller state size but bigger population size have about half the race meetings.A lot of the smaller tracks in Qld were once taken  off the roster but reinastated when the Lnp got into power are still there dipping into a pool of money which is getting smaller owing to the lack of faith in racing here.

If they want to have a strike, do it on Magic Millions day with the support of interstate participants. I bet the government would negotiate then.

I'm a bit confused why we need these point of purchase taxes in any of the states. First of all state TAB privatisations were promoted as the saviour of racing. Then the Field Legislation tax was supposed to save the industry via a new funding stream (remember V'landys carry on). Fact is the racing industry has always been - & will always be a bottomless pit re never having enough money. Let it be treated like all other industries. Further, these new consumption taxes will end up being worn by the punters. When did any big business not pass on any new cost to do business to their customers ( punters) ? Whole things a disgrace.

United front????
Word is a large stable from just over the border is going to nominate a massive team for Doomben and Gold Coast. I hope the industry understands this strike is for the long term survival of racing in Qld. Anybody who breaks the strike is a scab, and deserves the contempt of all.

There are already nominations for both meetings above. Guess we will know after 11.00am tomorrow who the scabs are.

If that's the case, I shudder to think of the ramification to that stable......then again, Birchley is allowed to train in QLD and VIC, but not NSW.....so, there is absolutely no common sense or respect in our industry....none.

How are they actually expecting to do it, though? The easiest way is to get the club to agree to call it off, but there are rumours some clubs don't want to and will go ahead anyway. So seems kind of doomed to fail.

I’m not exactly sure of current rules but remember apprentices being direct to ride when jockeys have taken strike action in the past.
However if their masters haven’t any horses contesting events, it may only be trainers who have horses racing that can force apprentices to ride.

I thought usually jockeys strike by themselves, upsetting plenty a trainer, and masters make them ride. But not sure either.
