Hi everyone,

With the latest aussie horses in Redkirk Warrior (Aussie trained) and Merchant Navy (Aussie bred and formely Aussie trained) running overseas at Royal Ascot, it made me wonder just how many horses from Australia (Aussie trained or formerly Aussie Trained) have run overseas. The reason for this project is to see how our Aussie horses have performed overseas. See below the list I haveput together, it starts at 1997 (Tasmanian mare Sunny Lane) onwards however I would like to go further back to 1990.

If anyone has any horses that they would like to add....then please add the name(s) in tvis thread. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I take it you don't want all the formally aussie trained sold to HK and Singapore? That'd be a big bloody list.

Karasi won three Nakayama races early this century.
Lets Elope went over to America after bleeding in Australia and won a group 1 the Beverly Lee Stakes.
Stylish Century went to Japan with Better Loosen Up in 1990 and finished 12th.
Naturalism ran 2nd in the Japan Cup in 1992.
Shaftesbury Avenue ran 3rd in the Japan Cup, not sure the year.
Catalan Opening won the international mile in, I think 1998.
Obviously Strawberry Road, when trained by Patrick Bianconne, in the mid 80's.

Here are a few from the colonial period.  There were quite a few more.  The export market to the UK dried up after the imposition of the Jersey Law which excluded colonial breds like Newhaven from the General Studbook.  Afterwards, particularly in the 1930's and 1950's and 1960's it was much more common for Australasian breds to be exported to the USA.  I'll see if I can put together a list of those in the next couple of days...

This is a copy of a post I made to another forum in 2014.  It included a few who were exported to stand at stud rather than race...

RINGMASTER 1882 h (First King - Yardley GB)
Winner of the 1885 Caulfield Guineas and possibly the first colonial thoroughbred horse to be exported from the colonies to Britain to race.  He was only a moderate performer in England, placed in  a couple of Liverpool Cup races.

MERMAN 1892 h (Grand Flaneur - Seaweed)
http://thehorsesoftheyears.blogspot.com/2014/11/merman.html
Winner of the 1896 Williamstown Cup and 7 of 24 starts in Australia.  Bought by Lily Langtry and won 8 of 25 starts in the UK including the 1900 Ascot Gold Cup, 1899 Goodwood Cup & Goodwood Plate, 1898 Jockey Club Cup, 1897 Cesarewitch and Lewes Handicap.

Winner of the 1896 Melbourne Cup, VRC Derby and 1897 VRC Champion Sks.  Taken to the UK by owner William Cooper.  Won the 1898 and 1899 March Stakes at Newmarket, 1899 City & Suburban Handicap and Epsom Cup

MALUMA 1892 f (Malua - Madcap)
Winner of the 1896 VRC Newmarket Hcp. Purchased by Lily Langtry and after travelling badly recovered the following season to win the Lewes Handicap (12f) in UK

Winner of the 1898 Melbourne Cup.  Successful in the UK winning the 1900 City & Suburban Hcp and placed third behind Merman in the 1900 Ascot Gold Cup

PARIS 1887 g (Grandmaster GB - Enone)
Winner of the 1891 AJC Doncaster. 1892 Caulfield Cup, 1893 AJC Metropolitan, 1894 Caulfield Cup.  Taken to UK as a 8YO and won the 1896 Lewes Handicap and other races. 2nd to Canterbury Pilgrim in the Liverpool Cup.

GEORGIC 1892 ch m (Clan Stuart GB - Butterfly GB)
Won the 1895 AJC All Aged Sks.  In the UK won the 1898 Cambridgeshire Handicap and the Prince Edward Handicap at Manchester.

AUSTRALIAN STAR 1896 c (The Australian Peer - Colours)
Won the 1899 Caulfield Sks and VATC Eclipse Stakes.  In the UK won the 1901 City & Suburban Handicap

BATTALION 1889 h (Battalios - Nancy Till)
Queensland bred war horse, winner of 1894 Queensland Cup, 1897 Brisbane Cup, 1897 Williamstown Cup, 1897 & 1898 VRC Melbourne Sks.  Taken to England as a 9YO.

Champion juvenile, winner of the 1897 Caulfield Guineas and 1898 VRC St Leger.  Taken to England to race but retired to stand at stud after arriving in poor condition.

CARBINE (nz) 1885 h (Musket GB - Mersey GB)
Champion racehorse in Australia, bought by the Duke of Portland to stand alongside St Simon for 13,000 guineas in 1893 after siring the Likes of Amberite, Wallace and La Carabine in Australia.  Sired the 1906 English Derby and Grand Prix d'Paris winner Spearmint, a champion sire who produced Nogara, the dam of Nearco, and Plucky Leige, dam of champion sires Sir Galahad III, Admiral Drake, Bulldog and Bois Rousell, thereby writing Carbine's name into the pedigrees of the leading horses of the 20th century.

Won the 1885 VRC Melbourne Sks, VRC Canterbury Plate and the 1885 and 1886 VRC Royal Park Sks.  Australian champion sire in 1896 and 1902.  Subsequently exported to UK as a sire where he proved an important broodmare sire.  His grand daughter Rosedrop was the dam of champion sire Gainsborough and another Rose Leaves was dam of the American champion sire Bull Lea.  Trenton was also grand sire of the US champion gelding Roamer.

ABERCORN 1884 h (Chester - Cinnamon)
Champion galloper in Australia later exported to UK as a sire where he produced La Venganza, the dam of the American champion filly Nellie Moore

KIRKHAM 1887 h (Chester - La Princesse)
Bred to Northern Hemisphere time at Kirkham, NSW by the Hon James White along with a brace of others  (Mons Meg & Narellan) and sent to the UK to be prepared for the English Derby.  Finished 7th behind Sainfoin in the 1890 Derby.  At stud in Ireland get got the 1905 English Grand National Steeplechase winner Kirkland and the 1903 Irish Grand National winner Kirko

MONS MEG 1888 f (Martini Henri NZ- Malacca GB)
Filly bred to Northern time at Kirkham and taken to England where she won the 1891 Queens Vase at Ascot

UNIFORM 1893 c (Hotchkiss NZ- Formo NZ)
Kiwi colt won the 1896 NZ Derby at Christchurch and the 1898 Wellington Cup before export to UK where he won the 1899 Lewes Handicap

SURVIVOR (nz) 1893 g (Lochiel - Melissa)
Won the 1897 AJC Metropolitan and Wycombe Hcp.  Ran second to Newhaven in the 1899 City & Suburban Hcprd year in succession that an Australian horse had triumphed in the rich season opener at Epsom.

Given that jumps racing is bigger than flat racing over in the UK & Ireland, Crisp might be the best performed Aussie horse over there although it raced in the 1970s not since 1990

One that generally gets forgotten is the George Hanlon trained stayer ROYAL SNACK.

He won 4 Moe Cups from 1993 to 1996 (inclusive), but also made 3 trips to Hong Kong and acquitted himself with aplomb..

April 1995 - 4th in the Queen Elizabeth Cup 2200m
Dec 1995 - 3rd in the Hong Kong Vase 2400m
Dec 1996 - 2nd in the Hong Kong Vase 2400m

It would be easier to compile a list of winners but if you include every horse, you are probably looking at close to 45,000

Rough Habit is every bit a Kiwi, just like Sunline - trained & owned in NZ.

So neither qualifies for your list.

But one Aussie trained horse that should meet your project criteria is MAJESTIC BOY.

He was trained by Bob Thompson in Sydney and won the G1 Hong Kong Cup over 1800m back in 1991.
