Fields out tomorrow

Voodoo Lad will headline Darren Weir's three-pronged attack on Saturday's Darley Goodwood, as the master trainer attempts to win his third straight feature Group 1 of the UBET Adelaide Festival of Racing.

The Ballarat horseman has seven horses nominated for the $1million event at Morphettville, but confirmed Voodoo Lad and impressive Warrnambool carnival performers Handsome Thief and Stellar Collision will be his contenders.

And while the latter two come in with good form after battling it out to quinella the Listed Wangoom Handicap earlier this month, Voodoo Lad returns for his first start since September's Group 1 Moir Stakes.

The leading trainer said the I Am Invincible gelding's first-up record of four wins and two seconds from six starts, speaks for itself.

"He's in great form and is always good fresh," said Weir.

"We couldn't have him in any better order going in for his first run, but obviously it's a very tough race," he added.

The six year-old has battled knee chip issues over the summer, but Weir said it's no longer a concern as he attempts to win his first elusive Group 1.

"He's been right up there for a number of years and certainly deserves a Group 1 to his name," he added.

"He's the best rated of my three going in, but the other two were impressive in Warrnambool and Stellar Collision should benefit from a lighter weight."

Thronum will get an 11th-hour chance this Saturday to improve his stud credentials after his owners Sun Stud decided to take a $60,000 leap of faith in the budding stallion.

The money is to be paid by Sun Stud for a private charter plane to take the entire from Brisbane to Adelaide so as he can have one final chance at winning a Group 1 before his racing days are finished.

The son of super sire Snitzel was to have been retired after last Saturday's Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane but was a late scratching from the race after suffering a minor head wound.

It was then decided that as the injury was minor and the horse was in excellent health otherwise, it would be worth the $60,000 investment if he was to upgrade his stallion credentials with a Group 1 victory.

To date, Thronum has had 13 starts for five wins and more than $440,000 in stakes. He is a Group 2 winner of the Australia Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at his latest run.

Thronum is set to join the 11-strong stallion roster at Victoria's Sun Stud from next season.

Shoals won't be running here. She's headed to the paddock.

Had to have a nibble at 41's (boost) on Missrock. Nice weight, barrier, and ran 2nd last year.

I couldn't possibly back Vega Magic at $2.70. There's many chances here. Vega wide gate and has to give the field a fair bit of weight. Going to have to be pretty good to win.

Value to be had elsewhere.

Obviously if Viddora is right she'll give it a shake. I can see Missrock running a race with that lightweight. Voodoo Lad is a bloody top horse.

I'll be taking on Vega at that price. Those two runs at the end of last prep were just plain l thought. Off the bit in both a fair way out. I know this is an easier race but l'm happy to work around him at that quote.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Vega Magic the first, first up winner of this race for a very long time last year?

While the conditions of the race have changed, it is still hard to accomplish a win here first up!

I thought Miss Rock ran just as well two weeks ago as she did in the Sangster last year (this years race was deeper), and so at the $26 she looks a nice each way bet again.

If you were sure she could reproduce her effort from the Euclase, then I'll Have A Bit would be right in this, it was an awesome effort.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

Vega huge drift. $2.70 out to $4.00.

They don't often drift that much in Group 1's.

Just goes to show how poison that $2.70 was. I was shocked when l saw that quote.

The horse can still win l suppose. It's reached it's right price now.
