With the rumour mill in overdrive, and plenty of social media opinions, Ben should probably be very diligent in following the rules. This is another problem for him. Edited by Gay3 - 18 Sep 2022 at 3:28pm |

You knew there was something going on when Racing Queensland felt the need to tell us that NOTHING untoward was going on.

If something like this happened in Sydney or Melbourne the stewards would have scratched all his runners on the day.

When they say “acting suspiciously” what were the stable staff doing exactly?
Trainer goes on front foot against whispering campaign Trainer goes on front foot against whispering campaign Ben Currie. Article Author Ben Dorries 28 November 2017 3 Comments Queensland trainer Ben Currie says it is time for the whispering campaign against him to stop. The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission on Tuesday took the extraordinary step of issuing a statement to quash rumours one of its stewards was under investigation for tipping off Toowoomba-based Currie about stable inspections. QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett insisted the rumours were baseless. “I would like to make it categorically clear that there is no foundation to these rumours whatsoever,” Commissioner Barnett said. “It’s grossly unfair to the steward concerned to tarnish his reputation in this way.” Currie, who won the Queensland premiership in 2016-17 with 103 winners, told Racenet he had nothing to hide and did not have an improper association with the steward. “I was at the stables when that inspection took place and I was even drug tested myself,” Currie said. “The steward and I are not even that close. “I don’t know where all these whispers and rumours are coming from but I want them to stop. “I run my own business and maybe some people don’t like me for some reason, but it’s not as if I’ve been pushing my success down anyone’s throat. “I don’t think I have been unfairly treated at all by QRIC and I’m not hiding anything.” Barnett explained why he had taken the step of putting out a statement. “I have decided to release a statement to put these rumours to rest because of the adverse way they reflect on the reputation of the Commission, the individual officer concerned and Toowoomba’s thoroughbred industry,” Commissioner Barnett said. “It is vital that industry participants have faith in the work of the Commission’s Authorised Officers.” |

Yep, this is no new revelation. The big difference here is QRIC actually pursuing the matters now. Toowoomba races used to be an option for SEQ trainers. They don’t even bother sending horses up the range any more. |

Are they pursuing it? Or is it just an illusion to appease? |

I wonder if this crackdown has anything to do with a certain big-time trainers (koala) expansion into Qld?? Timing is curious...

Horseshoe, your reply is rubbish.....The only runner that Baldwin and Lockwood have had there in their last 50 runners were yesterday. O’Shea has not been there, but you probably meant O’Dea. Lordy means that trainers used to regularly go to race in Toowoomba, but no longer more. Many feel there is not a level playing field. |

Yesterday’s meeting was a stand-alone Saturday metro meeting with several stakes races. Those guys you mentioned are very rarely seen at the regular provincial meetings there. Baldwin used to send horses there quite regularly. Been nearly 12 months since his last one. Most SEQ trainers don’t even bother looking at the Toowoomba calendar these days. |

Hard to make statements without knowing facts. At the moment it is an avalanche of chatter coming from the top of the range. But stewards, swabs and staff seems to be the chief topic. Expect RQ to comments today which should enlighten all. Could be a mini boom for transport companies |

Funny how that happens when horses draw wide at Beaudesert. But yes, the rumour mill is in overdrive as to what was on the CCTV footage.

Dorries has put an incorrect gloss on what QRIC has said.
Barnett's statement (per the article) was: “The allocation of prizemoney won by the horses under investigation has been suspended pending the final outcome”. Dorries has taken that to mean (again per the article): Prizemoney won by Currie-trained horses at Toowoomba last Saturday – including Weetwood Handicap winner Amanaat and Toowoomba Guineas winner Hang – have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. As a shareholder in a Currie runner that won prizemoney last Saturday at Toowoomba and has been paid (presumably meaning she is not a "horse under investigation"), the article is not 100% correct. Or maybe they'll be asking for a refund shortly!

Toowoomba trainer suspended over treatment of horsesQUEENSLAND Racing Integrity Commission stewards have suspended trainer Mark Currie after charging him with 16 counts relating to race day treatment. Currie is a licensed trainer but often works as stable foreman for his son Ben who is the state's leading trainer on winners. Stewards interviewed both men after opening an inquiry into activities at the stables on April 7, the day of the Listed Weetwood Handicap. Two of Ben Currie's stable staff have been stood down pending further inquiries. QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett yesterday said Currie senior had been charged with 12 counts of race day treatment and four counts of improper practice. Barnett said Currie had entered a plea of not guilty and the matters have been adjourned for hearing on a date to be fixed. He said Currie had his licence suspended until the matters were determined. "The first treatment allegedly occurred pre-dawn that morning and the second was the suspicious activity the QRIC Integrity Investigations Team (IIT) members witnessed while monitoring the premises," Barnett said. "It was also alleged that race day treatment occurred at the same stables before Ben Currie trained horses were transported to race at Doomben and Gatton on Saturday, March 24, 2018. "Today's outcome is not the end of the investigation, the focus of these continuing and protracted enquiries is the involvement of other racing industry participants and the outcome may not be known for several weeks." I find it a bit strange that they have allowed his Weetwood winner Amanaat run today considering it was of the morning of this horses win that the inspection took part, sat 3and4 wide and bolts in as fav. very easy in the betting to day and drifting.
