Does anyone know of a central resource that updates jockey suspensions and injuries?

I have the below for some states, but a single national resource would make my day.

Victorian riders Jason Benbow and Thomas Stockdale face lengthy periods of recuperation after recent falls, but both were still feeling fortunate while lying in their hospital beds on Wednesday.

Despite initial scans that cleared him of any structural damage, Benbow emerged from a trackwork fall at Caulfield with a fracture to his vertebrae.

From his hospital bed at the Alfred, Benbow told RSN 927's Racing Pulse that might be out for up to three months, but that the fall could have been a lot worse.

"Apparently the helmet split in half so if I didn't have that on I wouldn't be here," he explained.

Benbow, 31, also praised fellow riders Damien Oliver and Michael Walker for coming to his aid and Oliver for making sure Benbow was not moved until the ambulance arrived, fearing a back injury.

Despite the pain and the shock, Benbow was already missing his work. "I am looking forward to getting back into the saddle as crazy as that must sound," he said.

Meanwhile, Stockdale is nursing a broken leg after a barrier incident at Sunday's Stony Creek races which led to a horse galloping over his right leg.

Stockdale had two rods inserted into his leg during surgery at the Traralgon Hospital on Sunday but the 18-year-old apprentice is hoping to be out of hospital and starting his rehab by Thursday morning.

Young Victorian jockey Tahlia Hope remains in intensive care after contracting viral meningitis but has made "some improvement" overnight.

Hope, the 20-year-old niece of champion jockey Blake Shinn, was hospitalised after suffering complications from meningitis including infection and swelling on the brain.

The daughter of trainer Shannon Hope is in the ICU unit Frankston hospital.

However there was a ray of good news on Friday morning.

"According to Shannon this morning she has made some improvement overnight," Victorian Jockeys' Association chief Matt Hyland told RSN radio.

"Once they confirmed what they were dealing with she was treated accordingly.

"She is still in ICU and I'm sure until they get things under control that is where she will remain.

"She is conscious but in saying that very, very sick and as Shannon said she was struggling to communicate and that sort of thing originally.

"That was yesterday (Thursday) afternoon and obviously last night once they realised what they were dealing with they started to treat her and I’m sure that she will come good.

"But obviously she has been very sick."

It remains unknown how Hope contracted the illness but Hyland said she fell sick at the Mornington trials on Wednesday.

"She was at the trials at Mornington on Wednesday when she became ill and she just deteriorated fairly rapidly," Hyland said.

"Who knows how it came about.

"Jockeys immune systems particularly at this time of year with the cold weather, and wasting and the workload, I'm sure that has some affect on it.

"But to really understand how she contracted it we really don’t know.

"Once they realise what they are dealing with and they treat them accordingly they recover fairly quickly, all things being equal.

"But I would imagine a couple of weeks, three weeks, who knows – she is in ICU at the moment and once she starts to show significant improvement I'm sure they will put her into a ward.

"You'd be suggesting she would take a decent amount of time off to recover."

Veteran trainer Bruce Purcell in serious condition, jockey Tahlia Hope in intensive care

Victorian racing is in shock with a veteran trainer and emerging jockey fighting serious health battlers.

Trainer Bruce Purcell was flown to hospital after a trackwork incident this morning while apprentice jockey Tahlia Hope is in intensive care at a Melbourne hospital as she fights a serious infection.

Purcell has been placed in an induced coma after being kicked in the head this morning at trackwork at Cranbourne.

He was unloading horses from a float when he one of them lashed out and kicked him in the head just before 4am.

Australian Trainers Association chief executive Andrew Nicholl said Purcell may have suffered a fractured skull in the incident.

“Medicos got to him quickly and then the air ambulance came and flew him to the Alfred Hospital,” Nicholl said.

Nicholl said Purcell, 76, was an institution in racing who had been a trainer for over 50 years.

Purcell has five horses in work and one of them, No New Tricks, is entered for Caulfield tomorrow.

“You couldn’t count how many times he would have unloaded horses from a float but this one lashed out and got him,” Nicholl said.

Hope remains in intensive care at Frankston Hospital after suffering a bout of viral meningitis.

Hope was taken to hospital on Thursday evening after feeling unwell.

Victorian Jockeys Association chief executive Matt Hyland said he had spoken to her father Shannon Hope this morning.

“Shannon said there had been small improvement so that’s good news but she still remains in ICU,” Hyland said.

Hyland said doctors diagnosed her with the virus at 8pm on Thursday night.

“Once they did they’ve been able to treat her with the appropriate antibiotics so she’ll continue to improve,” he said.

Hyland said Hope complained of not feeling well after she rode in trials on Wednesday and her condition continued to deteriorate

Hope, 20, rode a double at Morphettville last Saturday and was going to ride Husson Eagle at Caulfield tomorrow.

Ben Melham faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines after revealing he has broken a shoulder blade and a collarbone after a nasty fall at Morphettville on Monday.

Melham took to Twitter to reveal the extent of his injuries sustained in an after-the-line fall aboard third-placed Set The Sails in the Morphettville Guineas (1600m).

The rider is expected to return to Melbourne on Tuesday, where his injuries will be reassessed by industry medical expert Dr Gary Zimmerman before a decision is taken on whether he requires surgery.

Melham had ridden 12 winners from just 37 rides since his return to the saddle last month following a five-month ban.

Lightweight rider Kate Walters will also need to undergo a concussion test before she is permitted to ride again after taking a tumble from Wonga Flyer in an 1850-metre maiden at Edenhope on Saturday.

Also, jockey Brian Higgins is set to have surgery on Tuesday for his dislocated shoulder sustained in a trackwork incident earlier this month that cost the 35-year-old a rare group 1 chance aboard Prix De Turn in the $1 million Australian Guineas.

I'll take walking over winners: Harley's comeback from fall

Popular comeback jockey Martin Harley is a winner before he even jumps back on a horse, with the Irishman revealing his scary fall in January put life into perspective for him.

Harley was robbed of riding Alpine Edge to victory in the $1m Magic Millions QTIS after he fell during the week of the rich race day, but he says the feeling of being able to walk again is better than any winner he will ever have in the saddle.

While he has ridden winners at Royal Ascot and Happy Valley, Harley made a low-key return to racing at Ipswich on Saturday finishing second on Bohemian Lad in the QTIS 2YO Handicap at his only ride on the day.

Harley has had serious falls in the past, but says breaking his neck, which left him in a halo for several weeks, made him think about life outside of racing.

"The timing has been frustrating but I will take walking again over winning at Magic Millions and some other things," he said.

"It puts it all into perspective, you take things like being able to get out of bed for granted sometimes.

"When you get a proper smash up like I just got, you sit back and think about it a bit, I'm just happy I can walk away from it again.

"I had done my neck once before, the C1 and C2, this time it was C0, C1 and C2, when you get close to bones in your neck, it does get scary and you start to think about it all."

After doing a power of rehab work, Harley said his determination to get back in the saddle played a role in his swift return.

While he has ambitions to get back to the top level, he is willing to take it slowly to best look after his body.

"Thankfully it seems I'm a pretty good healer, a lot of the specialists and doctors thought it'd be more than four months," he said.

"I did a decent job of it all, three vertebrates, probably the three most important ones in your neck.

"It has been a good healing process and I have healed well thanks to being looked after by the right people.

"I am doing physio three days a week and I am very pleased with it, the strength seems to be coming back.

"When I got back on the horse, it felt good and there are no real nerves there which is a good sign.

"I just want to start back with one or two, we will start off slowly and build back up."

‘I've been on the sidelines for too long': Hoop nears return after bad fall

One of state's most prolific riders will return to the saddle next week from a three-month stint on the sidelines following a nasty fall at Taree in October.

NSW jockey Jeff Penza has been given the green light to make his comeback at Goulburn next Tuesday.

Penza has been sidelined since October 29 last year when he was involved in a shocking incident at Taree that saw four jockeys come down, three of which were hospitalised.

Penza, who has amassed 2248 winners over more than two decades of riding, suffered 10 broken ribs, a punctured lung, internal bleeding and a concussion.

He required a tube in his chest to drain fluid around his lungs and spent several days in hospital before being released.

"It was one of those things that happen," Penza said.

"The injuries weren't too bad. It sounded terrible and I had people ringing me like I was on my deathbed sort of thing but I just had to take it easy for the first four or five weeks.

"Then I got a bit of mobility.

"That's how ribs are, they are very annoying at first but they come good with time."

It's been a stop-start 12 months for Penza, who has built a reputation as one of the state's most reliable provincial and country riders.

The experienced hoop also had to have three months off last season with a broken collarbone and had been beginning to build some momentum.

"It was annoying because I had three months off with my collarbone and had only been back for a few weeks and then I was gone again," he said.

"I got back into, rode a few winners at Taree and picked up a ride, then the rest is history.

"I am looking forward to getting back, it feels like I've been on the sidelines for too long.

"It's just racing, you have to expect it. You just have to be resilient as much as you can and get through it."

Penza said he's been ready to return to riding for the past three weeks but waited for the appropriate medical clearance to make his comeback.

"I have been feeling 100 per cent but they made me wait the full three months which comes up on Monday," he said.

"I have been training for the past three weeks pretty full on at home and I am itching to get back knowing that I have physically been all right for a while.

"We just had to wait the time to make sure everything was fully healed."

Fellow riders Courtney Van Der Werf and apprentice Lachlan Scorse were also injured in the fall, the latter of which suffered serious brain injuries.

Scorse spent 23 days in the John Hunter hospital before being transferred to a rehabilitation centre and continues on the road to recovery.

Courtney Van Der Werf broke her collarbone in the fall and yet to return to the saddle

Geez, as if he hasn't endured enough injuries & rehab. as it is Unhappy
Better add Beau as I see I must've forgotten Confused

Mertens in good spirits

Group 1-winning jockey Beau Mertens is set to be released from Traralgon Hospital in the next 24 hours, following further CT scans on Wednesday afternoon.

Mertens, who fell at Stony Creek on Tuesday when his horse Nobiallo went amiss in Race 1, sustained a cracked rib and internal bruising from the nasty fall.

"He's feeling much better today than he was last night and he sounded like the Beau of usual," Victorian Jockeys' Association boss Matt Hyland said after a phone conversion with Mertens on Wednesday.

"He sounded good, obviously a bit sore with a cracked rib, but all in all feeling better and keen to get home sooner rather than later."

Mertens also suffered concussion in the incident and as a result will be stood down from race riding for 12 days.

He will be further assessed by Dr Ben Barresi before being cleared to return.

The 26-year-old had originally been listed to ride Verifier at Caulfield on Saturday when acceptances were published on Wednesday morning.

Mertens had been in a purple patch of form, including riding a double at Caulfield last Saturday that featured victory in the G3 Bellmaine Stakes aboard Vagrant.

He will no longer be able to ride Otago next Saturday (February 17) in the C.S. Hayes Stakes, having won two starts aboard and trialled him on Monday at Cranbourne as he is being set for the Australian Guineas.

He also last week trialled his maiden G1 winner Attrition at Geelong who will resume in the Futurity Stakes on February 24.

Fellow jockey Thomas Stockdale, who also fell in the race, was uninjured and is scheduled to be back riding at Pakenham on Thursday.

As an aside, Thomas is engaged to Beau's sister Smile

South Australian apprentice jockey Chelsey Reynolds remains in intensive care more than two weeks after a horror fall at a private training facility.

Racing SA provided an update on Friday morning, saying 28-year-old Reynolds is being treated for a serious head injury at Flinders Medical Centre.

"Her sedation levels are being reduced and she is opening her eyes but not yet responding," a Racing SA statement read.

"Chelsey's family have told us that her recovery is going to be long and slow, but that she will continue to have all the care and love she needs.

"They have also asked us again to thank the community for all their messages of support and that their privacy continues to be respected during this tough time."

The jockeys are extremely brave people who risk life and limb every time they mount a horse. (Trackriders too).
But I cannot stand people who constantly make light of the dangers and bag jockeys for minor reasons. These keyboard warriors have probably never ridden a horse, and talk mostly through their pockets. Punters can be replaced when they eventually go broke, but people’s lives cannot be replaced, or broken bodies repaired.
Cheers to all riders.
Gambling has brought our family closer together. We had to move to a smaller house.

Exactly why I think there should be a total ban on gravely injured horses making a comeback. Or racing young horses with very little bone or obvious weak conformation. Not fair on the horses or the jockeys.
