Theres already been a few jumps trials at Oakbank & Warnambool over the past few weeks. The trials so far have included plenty of newcomers for 2018 plus old favourites like Now & Zen, Mannertone, Gold Medals & co. Gai Waterhouse is back with Valediction and noticed Dee Cee I (a listed winner in Sydney last spring) has a jumps career ahead of him too.

Season openers are:

SA - 28th Feb @ Gawler 3040m hurdle
VIC - 15th March @ The Bool with 2 hurdles and a steeplechase.

I thought the trial of SONRRIENTE was good enough to win a maiden.
Has done nothing in 18 Flat starts though, so would probably only back him if he was $101

Trained by Michael Quadara at Seymour. He must have one of the worst training records in Australia. His horses seem to run last or near last every start!

He also trains a few trotters, they aren’t much better

Wonderful photo djebel, Banjo's " The man from Snowy River" is so apt when you look at this, ......ps, it wasn't jumps like this that brought our Crisp undone.

Clondaw Warrior is an interesting addition to Sandy McGregors jumping team.

He brought out Dornello Mo & Jon Monash last season.

Now has Clondaw Warrior and another horse called Ivan Grozny both with Pat Ryan Jnr at Warrnambool. Both horses have shown form in high quality jumps races in Ireland, so it will be fascinating to see how they go in Australia.

Dormello Mo did well last year and has already won first up on the flat at Stawell, so I’m sure he’ll be in for a good prep again.

Sandy McGregor also has an unraced Irish horse called Bold Bandit trialling on Friday at the Bool too.

I believe Bold Bandit has also raced overseas, his form card hasn’t been updated yet is my understanding

Cheltenham is just days away.

2 stables have more entries each than we will see in Australia this winter.

It will not be missed in Australia.

Thanks for clarifying MK.....& welcome back to TBV!

Another interesting entry in Friday’s trials at the Bool is Cismontane from the Waterhouse stable. Was really competitive in the Spring with placings in the AJC St Leger, MV Cup, then a win in the Hotham Hcp & a creditable 13th in the Melb Cup.

Probably just a trial to keep his mind on the job for bigger Autumn handicaps in Sydney.

It’s certainly going to be a great season, can’t wait to get myself to the big days at Oakbank this year. Looks like we will have some top class horses coming.

First jumps met for the season today at the Bool.

Always tough to bet in early season jumps races, but here goes:

R1 - King Kamada
R2 - Police Camp
R3 - Fledged

But the first feature of the season comes up at Oakbank on Sunday with the Von Doussa Steeplechase.....Zed Em, No Song No Supper, Dormello Mo, Spying On You. Wow, great field!!

Looking forward to seeing Fledged and Valediction back today, both missed last season due to injury.

Both fledged and agreement back to scale okay, seemed to lose rider just after landing. No reported injuries to horse or jockey

Djebel, Maybe if you looked in the current year thread instead of last years?

Great race this year, some great trials for 2 weeks time

Going to be a top race the Great Eastern.

Zed Em, Dormello Mo. Now and Zen, No song No supper, and Spying on You are the ones I was impressed with today.

Hope Nishiazabu is okay though, looked to have a hard fall.

It's with mixed feelings that we announce that Nishiazabu has been retired.

He is fine but as much as we would like to have another shot at the Great Eastern we have decided the horses welfare must come first and Nishi deserves an immediate, long and enjoyable retirement.

He will spend his retirement at Cherry Gardens in South Australia. If anyone is ever interested in visiting him contact Mark on 0411320338.

Total prizemoney $353,619
90 starts/8 wins/27 placings
Won the 2016 Von Doussa Steeplechase
Won the 2016 SA Grand National Steeplechase
Twice Won the Thomas Foods Steeplechase (2016/2017)
Won the 2014 Oakbank Tattsbet Handicap (3600m)
Twice placed in the Great Eastern Steeplechase (2015/2016)
Twice placed in the Thackeray Steeplechase (2016/2017)
Nominated as a finalist for Australian Jumper of the Year 2016

Thanks to Bob Jemison who bred him and Bob, Jodie and Mark Hall as co owners.

Massive thanks to the Frew Family, Kevin, Heather, Jordan and Jemma who trained, nurtured and took care of him and Alyce and Judy for strapping him and for all the love they have given him.

Thankyou Paul Hamblin for riding him fantastically well in all the big races.

Thanks to everyone that has supported and followed him.

Finally, thanks to Nishi the Iron Horse and Flying South Australian! It's been an incredible and fun journey from a skinny weanling to holding his own with the best of the best.

Happy retirement Nishi.

Fabulous news! Well earned by a tough, honest jumper with more ability than most. Great decision & shows their appreciation of his efforts Clap

First jumps races at Terang since 2008, great to see them back at a track that was once a jumps racing stronghold

Both these horses let me down last start, but I’ll give them a second chance today:

Race 1 - Police Camp
Race 2 - Fledged

Must be a change of heart by Paddy Payne, as Zed Em paid up as an acceptor for the Great Eastern on Saturday.

Small but elite field in the big race. Should be a fantastic event as it is every year.
