And so the plot thickens:

Alleged Chinese spy target pictured sitting next to Liberal MP Gladys Liu at her home

By Paul Sakkal and Nick McKenzie

Nick Zhao, he man who claimed he was offered $1 million by a suspected Chinese spy to infiltrate the Australian Parliament attended a Liberal Party meeting with MP Gladys Liu at her former home.

Nick Zhao – who died in a Melbourne motel in March after he disclosed the suspected spy's approach to ASIO….

The China Overseas Exchange Association, at the time of Ms Liu's membership, reported directly to Beijing's powerful State Council and has since been merged with the Communist Party's United Front Work Department, aimed at influencing foreign governments.

China tried to plant its candidate in Federal Parliament, authorities believe

By Nick McKenziePaul Sakkal and Grace Tobin

Australian authorities are investigating claims that a Chinese espionage ring tried to install an agent for Beijing in a seat in Federal Parliament.

Sources with knowledge of the alleged plot believe the suspected Chinese intelligence group offered a million dollars to pay for the political campaign of Liberal Party member and Melbourne luxury car dealer Bo “Nick” Zhao, 32, to run for an eastern suburbs seat. The plot appears to be part of an operation to place a Chinese agent in Parliament.

Late on Sunday Australian Security Intelligence Organisation director-general of security Mike Burgess issued a statement entitled "Foreign interference". He said ASIO "takes seriously" the allegations reported by The AgeThe Sydney Morning Herald and 60 Minutes at the weekend about Mr Zhao as well as claims by young Chinese defector Wang Liqiang, who said he had worked as a spy in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

I didn't want to encourage him but now that Isaac has left I can say that I agree with many of his concerns about China. Nobody will convince me that a percentage of Chinese here do not have their main allegiance to china and are even willing to spy for them. Even a small percentage adds up to quite a large number.
What I don't agree with is his black and white approach, stop all trade with them, good way to make Australia a third way country Ouch

Very difficult problem, express disapproval of their actions while maintaining a good trade relationship.
No problem for red Dan Andrews though, he has signed up for the belt and road programme, all about money is our Dan , principles be damned Thumbs Down

I dont see China as a for or against issue, but as a reality.

They are our biggest trade partner and we live in their sphere of influence. China is something we have to manage pragmatically, deal with and trade with... not necessarily like or dislike.

But we can dislike and try to protect ourselves against their actions, infiltrating universities, parliament, exerting monetary pressure on people of influence, hacking and spying, buying up vast tracts of land, businesses, real estate etc ,etc.
Just as we do with any other country, just that china seems to be the most active in that sphere at present.

Absolutely, managing the relationship includes all that stuff. It is just a shame that our main partner in security has become a very unreliable friend, demanding we do things against our interests and withdrawing from major partnerships we rely on.

Another 5 years of the current US administration will fundamentally change our position in the world and test us to the limit.

And so the plot thickens even further.  If she's not a Chinese Government plant I'll be hugely surprised.

The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday reveal that Ms Liu secured access to the federal government for a company and Liberal Party donor that was endorsed by the Chinese Communist Party and later implicated in a major organised crime probe.

Mo doubt a percentage of Chinese here have their homeland's interest at heart and would be willing to spy and infiltrate for their despotic government.

Fun fact: Coronavirus has been around for thousands of years and most people get it at some stage of their lives and were around long before Chinese were screwing Koalas or the Murdoch media disinformation machine.

PS I am old enough to remember when a predecessor of this virus SARS didn't wipe out half the world's population despite Murdoch trying their best to convince us it would.

One-year-old dachshund Wally was found in a meat market in China, scared, lonely, and shivering in -10°C temperatures. He was destined to be killed and sold as a meal, but was lucky to be rescued in time by animal charity Plush Bears Rescue, who bought the sausage dog for £26 after spotting him for sale next to a collection of dog furs in Taonan. After a month spent recovering at the charity’s rescue centre, Wally is now getting ready to fly over to the US and meet his new family in Florida. Shelter volunteer Callum Zhenyi, 36, said: ‘I first saw Wally tied up to a motorbike next to his owner who was selling big dog furs displayed like rugs on the floor. ‘One of the other volunteers had seen a dachshund on their last trip and not saved it and they regretted that deeply.
