Clinton warns of China's political powerUnited States presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says China's efforts to increase its political power in Australasia need to be taken seriously.China's attempts to gain political power in Australia and New Zealand should be taken seriously, Hillary Clinton has warned. Speaking to an audience in New Zealand on Monday night, the former US presidential candidate said international interference in domestic policy was not just a problem in the US. "In Australia and here in New Zealand experts are sounding the alarm about Chinese efforts to gain political power and influence policy decisions," she told the Auckland audience of about 3000. "[Academic] Anne-Marie Brady of the University of Canterbury has rightly called this a new global battle, and it's just getting started. We need to take it seriously." In her wide-ranging talk, Ms Clinton also discussed Chinese president Xi Jinping's consolidation of power, as well as the US election, and more personal matters. Earlier in the day, she met New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, gifting her a Buzzy Bee toy and discussing how to combine politics and motherhood. Ms Ardern on Tuesday told reporters Ms Clinton's statements about China were not new. "There are a number of world powers that have an interest in our region and, of course, New Zealand needs to maintain our role in building our relationships because there is that greater presence here," she said.New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, is on Tuesday due to outline the government's budget plans for foreign affairs - with some tipping greater spending on the Pacific - following his announcement of an increased focus on the region earlier this year.ustralian Associated PressMAY 8, 201810:21AM |

Children's Taiwan flag design painted over by council ahead of beef industry eventBy Paul Robinson and Emilia TerzonA family is outraged after Taiwanese flags were painted over by council on children's artwork on a bull statue erected along Rockhampton's Riverbank. Students from various schools in Rockhampton, in central Queensland, were asked to paint six bull statues as part of a joint initiative by Rockhampton Regional Council and Beef Australia for this week's biggest cattle industry event in the country. One of those bulls was painted with barramundi-shaped flags by students at North Rockhampton High School. PHOTO: Mr Downing, with mother Amy Chen, says 'it's a slap in the face' to their children. (ABC News: Paul Robinson) Taiwan-born siblings, Amber Jun Xie and Iu Ting Xie, painted their country's flag on the bull's body. Stepfather Lawrence Downing said his children had done "a great job". "They were asked to paint their culture," he said. The bull was picked up by council officers on April 30. Just days ago, it was erected along Rockhampton's Riverbank for this week's Beef Australia. The plaque reads: "This bull celebrates the cultural diversity of the Rockhampton community". But the student's two Taiwanese flags — one painted on the front leg and another on the rear of the other side of the statue — had been painted over. Council admits covering up Taiwan flagsThe council's department, Advance Rockhampton, has taken the blame for covering up the bull's Taiwanese flags.
The People's Republic of China claims Taiwan as its territory, however Taiwan operates like a separate country with its own constitution, parliament, and currency. The Australian Government does not display Taiwanese flags, however there is no federal directive to state or local governments about what they should do. In recent years, China has emerged as increasingly important for Australia's beef industry and is one of its biggest export destinations. "We highly value the relationship with all of our international trading partners and the opportunities they present for our region," Mr Cullen said. "The school was contacted prior to the changes being made." Children 'very sad and disappointed'The two students' mother, Amy Chen, said her children were "very sad and disappointed" by the council's decision to paint over their flags.
"They can't do that — it's wrong to do that." Mr Downing reiterated his family's anger. "There was a Brazilian flag and a Japanese flag but their flag — a Taiwanese flag — was covered up," he said.
"You can't tell me a group of Chinese delegates are going to be upset by two Taiwanese flags in the shape of a barramundi fish. "The council should just say, 'no, we can't do this'. "Don't worry about the Chinese — if they want to spend money, they'll spend money." China pressures private companiesThis week Foreign Minister Julie Bishop warned China against trying to exert pressure on private companies. China had written to Qantas — and dozens of other airlines — asking them to refer to Taiwan as part of China. In February, a Sydney waitress claimed she was fired by a Chinese restaurant for referring to herself as "Taiwanese". The council said Beef Australia was not involved in the decision to cover up the children's flags. |

Do you think Hillary knows something Isaac? Then what do you make of Trump and this extraordinarily bizarre tweet today, praising and calling for the support of a Chinese communications corporation who recently was found guilty of breaking sanctions related to Iran? Nuts or heavily compromised? #MCGA Making China Great Again? |

Hillary Clinton warns of Chinese influence on Australian politicsBy Leigh Sales Updated Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton has warned Australia to be wary of Chinese interference in domestic political decision making. "I think Australians need to be for Australians, Americans need to be for Americans, and whether it's Russia in a secret way interfering with our election and producing more than 3,500 ads to try to confuse our electorate, to try to damage me, or the Chinese looking to try to influence policy, we should say no," she told 7.30."I don't care what side of the political aisle you might be on, in either Australia or the United States. We have an interest in making sure that decisions that are made by our governments are not the result of some kind of influence pedalling by a foreign power." But Ms Clinton, in Australia on a speaking tour, does not think that means the relationship needs to be confrontational. "Australia has a lot of interests with China, certainly your economy is intertwined with China. But I do think that Australia, along with other liberal democracies around the world, have got to take the threat of foreign interference seriously," she said. "I know from just reading that there have been instances of exposures concerning political efforts by Chinese interests, through contributions and other influence efforts to really direct certain policy outcomes."Despite the bitter disappointment of losing the US presidential election, Ms Clinton refused to be drawn on what the outcome might be of the FBI's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. "There is certainly a lot of smoke," she told 7.30. "How much fire it turns out to be, we'll find out when the investigation's completed." With a recent poll indicating that more than 60 per cent of Republicans think the FBI is framing President Donald Trump, Ms Clinton backed the integrity of the investigation. And she said those Republicans' view may change once any evidence is made public. "Our only recent historical experience is with [former president] Richard Nixon, and until the very end he had a solid base of support within the country, predominantly within the Republican Party," she said. "But once the evidence was actually presented it forced him to resign. "So I don't think any of us can tell where it's going.
In October 2016, just days before the presidential election, then-FBI director James Comey announced the bureau was reopening investigations into Ms Clinton's use of a private email address while secretary of state, a decision Ms Clinton partially blames for her subsequent loss. She is at a loss to explain why Mr Comey failed to also reveal they were investigating Mr Trump's campaign. In an interview with 7.30 in April, Mr Comey said he felt "sick" at the thought that his handling of the Clinton email affair may have affected the 2016 US election and that he acted as he did in the interests of transparency."That's hard to square with the failure of either he or the FBI to disclose to people that there was an active investigation going on about potential Russian interference in our presidential election, and the potential involvement or at least association, in some way, by supporters of then Mr Trump," Ms Clinton said. "I don't understand why he did what he did in 2016 but I will continue to follow what goes on in the investigation of which he is now a part." 'We've been down this road before' with North KoreaWith the announcement of a meeting between Mr Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12, there are some who are suggesting that a successful outcome should lead to a Nobel Peace prize for Mr Trump.Ms Clinton said that was looking too far ahead. "Look, if there is a positive outcome that can be verified, particularly with respect to the North Korean nuclear program that has built-in safeguards, so that it is sustainable, not a one-off announcement at a summit, I will join in the applause," she told 7.30. "Because that is something that will be good for the world if it can be brought about.
"We've been down this road with the North before, where they've made promises and then within a year or more it's determined that they have broken those promises. "It's certainly hopeful, but I can't be either optimistic or pessimistic at this time." She credits leadership in China and South Korea for helping to create the climate that allowed the Singapore meeting. "I think the change in leadership in South Korea is significant," she said. "The new President came in with a very public view that he wanted to see if there could be a rapprochement — the dream of the South has always been reunification.
"There have been two meetings between him and Xi Jinping in the lead up to this summit in Singapore." And what does she believe has brought Mr Kim to the point where he is now willing to talk? "I think that the view among some experts is that Kim Jong-un is finally understanding that there is a way for him to maintain power but also to modernise his economy," Ms Clinton said. "And the other might be that he has succeeded in developing the pieces of a nuclear weapons program. His intercontinental ballistic missile tests have been convincing that they could reach the United States. "We know he can produce bombs because he's tested them and if he's mastered the, what's it called, miniaturisation, so that the warhead can fit on the missile, he doesn't have to do any more. "So perhaps he's exploring what else he might get." |

PNG fisherman uncovers 60 kilograms of suspected illicit drugs buried on remote beachBy Bethanie Harriman in Port Moresby Posted Fri at 3:09pmPolice in Papua New Guinea believe a fisherman has disturbed a drug-running operation after finding nearly 60 kilograms of what is suspected to be illicit drugs buried on a remote beach. The fisherman took his discovery back to his village in Milne Bay, but the villagers were later confronted by a group of aggressive, heavily tattooed foreigners and forced to hand them back. "The guys have gone to the village, there was about seven of them, Asian-looking guys with tattoos all over their body and they've aggressively got on the village people, and fearing their safety they had to release those drugs," Milne Bay Police Commander George Baiagau said. The villagers did manage to conceal six parcels from the suspected drug runners, and the parcels have now been given to police. Police said the fisherman found 11 bags containing what they believed were hard drugs on an isolated beach in Milne Bay province last week. The fisherman took the bags back to his village on Budi Budi Island and later told police that inside the bags were 55 smaller parcels. Commander Baiagau said police were yet to establish exactly what was in the parcels. "The matter was reported to Port Moresby, I have two Australian Federal Police and two Papua New Guinean police forensics officers, they've arrived here for us to fully ascertain what kind of drugs they are," he said.

Here is the evil Hillary trying to save us from the even more evil Chinese, while your man Donald is tweeting to make China great again and conspiring with the Chinese to capitulate on the North Korean nuclear situation. Funny old world isn't it Isaac?

So let me see if I have this right.
A failed diplomat, presidential candidate and politician, from a country who has told Australia what it's foreign relations will be for over 70 years, is telling us that we should not let another foreign government influence our governing. I guess if Hillary says jump, we should ask how high |

A failed diplomat? Well that's in the eye of the beholder.
And no-one's from where I see it is suggesting for a moment that we should agree with her opinions. No Voyager, it's more to do with her entitlement to express an opinion, as a female in front of a female journalist. Without the clearly misogynistic bagging of both host and guest as appears above. ps please list the US leaders who haven't suggested we Australians shouldn't jump high on their demand.

No misandry evident in the interview? Not that it matters. Maybe people can think Hillary's an awful person who shouldn't be grovelled to out of an interviewer's passion for 3rd and 4th wave feminist ideology (which lots of feminists hate), while not having a prejudice against women. Or maybe I'm just a rightard mysogynist.
