International campaign on the agenda for blistering 'Bolttaash'By David Baxter France could be just the beginning for lightning-fast Abbaye winner Battaash, with trainer Charlie Hills eyeing a global campaign next year for his sprint sensation who has new golden shoes to match his speed. Given the speed in which he covers five furlongs, it can be a case of blink and you miss Battaash, but he was easy to spot on Sunday sporting his natty copper shoes. "Usain Bolt can have them, so why not him?" Hills joked. "We call him Bolttaash now." The snazzy shoes are set to stay, and with Battaash having taken his first trip abroad in his stride, Hills is now eyeing targets further afield for the son of Dark Angel, who could become the yard's first global moneyspinner, with targets including the Everest in Australia in October next year. The three-year-old's four-length demolition job of his rivals down the straight at Chantilly was a sight to behold, as he careered away from the field under Jim Crowley to claim a first Group 1. It was a display of controlled aggression and pace, as opposed to his run in the Nunthorpe at York, where he boiled over beforehand and could only finish fourth. "He took it all really well, obviously we didn't want a repeat of York," Hills said on Tuesday. "He was stabled in a different yard the night before and came over to the course at around 10am. It was a great day, he's got so much ability and raw speed." Well-behaved at home, Battaash gets his game face on when at the track. Hills said: "He's very chilled out, like a pet. He goes out with the string no problem, it's just his blood gets up when he's out on course." Battaash is set to return to action next year and Hills said: "There's lots of money abroad and there's plenty of races to look at like the Everest in Australia." Having been gelded to help concentrate his mind on racing, Battaash's value lies in winning races, and he could go to Meydan for the Al Quoz in March before the King's Stand at Royal Ascot next year, and Hills is confident he will be even better at four. The trainer said: "He'll definitely improve next year, I've never seen a horse with so much speed on the gallops. He'll go back to Shadwell now for a break, and then we'll look to have him back in around Christmas." |

COMMENT JULIAN MUSCAT
To walk the walk you gotta talk the talkNo such qualms surround another horse who dazzled at Chantilly on Sunday. Battaash was immense, and we can anticipate more of the same for many moons. The beauty of Battaash is that he is a gelding. It is easy to empathise with those who believe geldings have no place in Group 1 races like the Prix de l’Abbaye. Entire horses are not as straightforward to handle. In Battaash’s case, it’s more than likely he would be untrainable with testosterone coursing through his highly-charged veins. Against that, it would be a crime to be denied the spectacular sight of Battaash in full flow. Front-running sprinters have a unique dynamic. As with a lightning bolt, you can almost feel electricity in the air. In some ways it’s a shame connections appear unwilling to commit Battaash to a duel with Lady Aurelia in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. But Battaash should derive great benefit from a quiet winter, from which he should emerge a less fretful horse. In that event, he looks a natural for the A$10 million Everest sprint in Australia a year from now. There was an interesting aside to Battaash’s triumph. He was fitted with gold-coloured racing plates, a ruse doubtless inspired by the golden spikes Michael Johnson wore when taking 200m and 400m golds at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. They were not out of place, although when trainer Charlie Hills was asked about them afterwards he left the clear impression he would rather be any place except standing before his interviewer. He was overcome by embarrassment. As Frankie Dettori has shown, there’s nothing wrong with introducing a bit of showbiz to racing. In doing that, however, you must adhere to the old showbiz maxim. If you wanna walk the walk, you gotta talk the talk. Or you’ll end up looking like a proper charlie. |

We have been bombarded on SKY 528 with 2017 EVEREST stories nearly every night for a long time now.
I have found it a giant yawn and refuse to watch any of this pre-event hype. and now, are we going to suffer for another year?...coming |

If Battaash is the best Europe has to offer over the short course we have precious little to worry about.

You might well be right however by the time the International Classifications are released he will be the highest rated sprinter on the Planet. There is a reasonable chance he will improve on that rating next season. It will the coup critics have been hoping for. A massive promotional boost to the race that stops a.............

I'm not for a moment doubting what you say Djebel.
However unless I'm mistaken (which is a regular affliction) the galloper has won just three Group races in its life thus far and none beyond 5f.

MEDIA RELEASE
Triple Crown Syndications Redzel set for Everest defence after Triple Crown and Yulong Investments reach deal TRIPLE CROWN SYNDICATION’S inaugural Everest Champion REDZEL will return to defend his crown in the world’s richest race on turf after Triple Crown and Yulong Investments were today delighted to reach an agreement to race the five-year-old son of Snitzel in 2018’s renewal of The Everest, worth a staggering $13 Million. Redzel, a winner of $8.69 Million in prizemoney, will look to defend his Group 1 Doomben 10,000 crown on Saturday, before heading for a spell and embarking on a spring campaign to defend his Everest title on October 13, 2018. On reaching the deal Triple Crown’s Chris Ward said, “It was an incredible day for all involved last year when Redzel won The Everest and we are very much delighted to be returning with our fantastic team of owners to the race this year with the aim of defending his title. “Mr Zhang has been a prominent supporter of the racing industry in Australia and we are thrilled to be partnering with his Yulong Investments group and teaming up with someone possessing such passion and ambition for the sport. “Redzel has proven over the last 12 months to be the best sprinter in the country, winning the inaugural running of The Everest and the Group 1 Darley Classic in the Spring before claiming the Group 2 Challenge Stakes in the Autumn where he broke the track record for 1000m to add to his track record over 1100m at Randwick. “Peter & Paul Snowden are the ultimate grand final trainers, as they proved in this race last year, and alongside Yulong Investments we have a strong team to retain The Everest in 2018.” Sam Fairgray, Chief Operating Officer of Yulong Investments added, “We are delighted to secure Redzel to represent Yulong Investments in the 2018 Everest. “He is the reigning Everest Champion and is one of Australia’s elite sprinters. His racing style and ability to handle all surfaces was a major factor in Mr Zhang selecting Redzel. “The Snowdens already train a number of Yulong’s large racing team and are outstanding at getting horses to peak in their grand final. We look forward to teaming up with Triple Crown and their syndicate members in this year’s renewal of the Everest.” Photos: Bradley Photographers |

I'm going to pen every international that comes out for this race that isn't from Asia without even looking at their form.

Just as an aside, the Yulong crew has been wonderful for breeders and trainers alike since they lobbed in Oz.
And it's to the Australian industry's benefit if they and others can later get racing and breeding industry up in China.

Why do you say the less horses exported the better?
Sales to Singapore, Hong Kong and South Africa etc certainly assist breeders, but what's wrong with that? And there are more than enough horses left over to supply the racing public with "product" seven days a week 52 weeks of the year. This weekend alone there are 31 meetings around Australia with over 3700 nominations across every State and Territory.

Explain how our best racing prospects that happen to be geldings being taken out of the racing population is good for Australian racing.
And I could care less about prize money and yearling prices being at record highs. |

Approximately 1.2% of Australian-bred yearlings are sold overseas, and perhaps 0.5% of older horses.

I don't believe the figures but let's take them at face value.
My point still stands, that 0.05% comprises of most of our best racing prospects that happen to be geldings. Silent Witness not racing in Australia was phenomenal for Australian racing. |

Surely if your a slot holder you are wary of the two year old's turning 3 yo's.
Could not have Estijabb OR Oohood represent me. Could not see English winning or running top three. Redkirk Warrior is hopeless around a corner so he is left on the shelf, Vega Magic, Viddora and Menari have had injury seetbacks, so I want to see them run before I fall into them. Happy Clapper and Brave Smash are probably better at 1300 or 1400m but first up they could win. And so for mine, that leaves Kementari, Catchy and Shoals as my potential reps. I could go outside the square and look at horses like Champagne Cuddles, Le Romaine and Pierata, but my nominee would be Shoals. If she was mine, I would run Winx and then move into the Cox Plate second up. Train her right up for the Warwick Stakes, freshen up for the Everest and then she should still have the foundation for the Cox Plate. Horses who have had a mile prep have run well in the Cox Plate before. |

I'd agree...Vega Magic looks the most complete package. It will be an incredibly tough contest and a very interesting lead up.
Also, just read that Begg won't pursuit The Everest with Written By. |
