Why couldn't he find a nice lopping 1400m maiden to kick him off in ?

I hope he wins on Saturday but seriously a 1000m down the straight is just idiotic.

Frankel colt ready for Flemington debut

By AAP
One look at a Frankel colt at a Sydney Easter yearling sale was enough for Robbie Laing to hunt out potential buyers.

With a reserve of $500,000, Laing took a gamble on the colt after he was passed in at auction for $475,000.

That 2016 purchase, named Frankel My Dear, makes his racetrack debut in the VRC Members Pavillion Handicap on Saturday.

Laing expected the colt to fetch considerably more that the reserve and began investigations soon after the colt left the sale ring.

"There was a problem with his off fore," Laing said. "It could have been bone, it could have been a callous or it could have been ligament but a soft tissue scan revealed he'd had a knock on his sesamoid.

"There was a little bit more bone than normal, but the suspensory was in the right spot and the ligaments were all okay.

"The reserve was $500,000, so we got him for that."

Longtime clients Ray and Susie Montague took a share after Ray saw a show on Frankel's trainer Henry Cecil on a flight home from London and wanted one of Frankel's progeny.

Laing said Pakenham trainer Frankie Stockdale also has a small share after seeing the colt at the sale.

The trainer is expecting the 1000m trip to be too short on Saturday and will be happy providing the colt is hitting the line strongly.

He's already contemplating the Caulfield Guineas with the three-year-old and the possibility of a Victoria Derby start.

"Frankel himself only won up to 2000 (metres) but this horse is steeped in stamina on the dam side," Laing said.

"He's not a nuggety sprinting type. He's an elegant athletic sort of a horse.

"I've seen a couple of Frankel's race, Darren Weir's (New Horizons) and Chris Waller's (Merovee) and this horse is a mirror image of Frankel.

"The good thing about him is we thought he was alright three months ago and every time I've recently put him down he's been producing on the track."

Frankel My Dear won a Cranbourne jumpot last month before pleasing his trainer in a grass gallop with older galloper Jaws Of Steel on Tuesday.

"He's bred to stay but he's got a good turn of foot and goes into the race very fit," Laing said.

Frankel My Dear Might Provide Frankel his 1st Win in Australia

Frankel My Dear Might Provide Frankel his 1st Win in Australia

Frankel My Dear Might Provide Frankel his 1st Win in Australia

By Kristen Manning

Every now and then there is a first starter who really grabs the attention, whether it be due a memorable name or a flashy pedigree.

In the case of Frankel My Dear – the Robbie Laing trained two-year-old who has accepted to run in the opening event at Flemington on Saturday – it is both!

What a great name that is, one that pays homage to both a famed movie moment and the young horse’s sire who is, of course, the mighty Frankel.

To date Frankel has had just a couple of runners in Australia with the Darren Weir trained Japanese bred New Horizons catching the eye with a fast-finishing second at Bendigo a couple of weeks ago.

The Laing stable will be hopeful that it is their horse that brakes Frankel’s local duck and judging by his success overseas it is only a matter of time before the breed make their mark in Australia.

Though that of course is not a given with Frankel’s sire Galileo underperforming in this part of the world in comparison to his impressive European exploits.

Frankel is however a rule breaker. On the track he (just like Black Caviar) broke the adage that ‘they all get beaten some day’ and at stud he is siring classy performers out of mares who, on paper, don’t necessarily look the best matches for him.

For example his Gr.3 Sandown Classic Trial winning son Cunco. Frankel is out of Danehill mare, Cunco’s dam is by Danehill’s son Danehill Dancer. The stakes winner strike rate of close up Danehill line-breeding is low, hovering at around 2% with a winners-to-runners ratio in the high 40s.

Frankel meanwhile has had four winners from seven runners line-bred to Danehill including that Gr.3 winner as well as two metropolitan level winners.

Then there is the legendary Sadler’s Wells, grandsire of Frankel. Duplicating Sadler’s Wells has a 2.3% stakes winner success rate, hardly flash. Frankel, from just five runners line-bred to him, has sired three Group winners!

Let’s also have a look at the great stallion Rainbow Quest, second dam sire of Frankel. Line-breeding to him results in 2.2% stakes winners. Frankel has had just seven runners with that cross but the two to win are both Group winners.

Which brings us to Frankel My Dear, a horse bred on a close 4 X 2 cross of Rainbow Quest.

His is a pedigree of great interest to Australian racegoers and not just because of Frankel. HIs dam Buenos Aires – who has already produced the French Listed winner Buenos Dias – being a half-sister to one of the greats of the local turf.

A stakes placed winner in France who now resides at Cressfield Stud in NSW, she is one of 11 winners (from as many to race) produced by the wonderful mare Benediction – also dam of superstar Might And Power.

Also dam of Flemington Gr.3 winner Matter Of Honour and French Listed winner Bastet, she is also ancestress of super filly Mosheen, Hong Kong Derby hero Lucky Owners and the French 1000 Guineas winner Beauty Parlour.

And so Frankel My Dear has much to live up to. We look forward to witnessing the start of his racetrack journey at Flemington on Saturday.

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Very disappointing to see him labouring home beaten 3 or 4 lengths.

Very poorly placed.

Hopefully they find a 1400 or 1600 maiden for him.

17th November when Frankel My Dearvran poorly Laing
reported that the horse had mucus in the throat.

He has had 2 relatively quick starts 28th and today, since then and run poorly on both occasions.

It's possible the horse is no good.

It's likely the trainer is no good

It's highly likely both are no good.

Bit harsh to bag the horse after only 9 career runs, especially when he hasn’t yet been tested at distances that his bloodlines suggest would be most suitable.

His dad is Frankel, whose best progeny to date are proving to be 2000-2400m horses.

Whilst mum is a half sister to Might & Power (super horse at 2000m+), by Rainbow Quest who sired heaps of excellent stayers in the 1990’s.

I’m sure a trainer as smart as Robbie Laing has a long term plan with him.

Yep, race him out of his class or distance capability before losing him to David Hayes who promptly gelds the horse leading to little discernible improvement in performance.

Oops, may be confusing him with So Si Bon.  Embarrassed

Wins fresh first up in low grade.

Wins second up whilst still fresh 4 weeks later.

Runs poorly on quickish backup. MUCUS

3 runs since that MUCUS run with less than 2 weeks between each run.

Very very poor trainer.

Acceptor for a BM58 over 2418m at Geelong on Boxing Day.

Frankel progeny seem to go well over longer trips in the UK, so it will be interesting to see how this stallion goes on Wednesday.

The horse needs a rest.

Since the mucus incident he has not put any effort into his finish and he keeps running every 10 days or so.

This is just a monumental kiss up.
