Nice barrier trial. If there is niobium's enquiry into the ride and instructions, and pressure put on Williams the trainer, we will again be reminded who runs Victorian racing.

It was an impressive run, no doubt.

But lets not get carried away. He got beaten by 2 horses that are mediocre winter stayers, who themselves are not at their optimum distance.

KILIMNJARO is not qualified for the Melb Cup and would need to win or place in a lead up race to even make the field.

Anyone game to follow up after the barrier trial? Should be winning R7 IF he's let go.

I'm on. I think they probably want to raise his rating. 2000m Flemington suits.

I'm on without being overly confident because we can't trust Williams. Barrier trial first up. If they want to win tomorrow they will.

The horse's form as a 3yo in England and Ireland is far too good for this.

Agree Sunline that's why I thought Bonfield's observation wrt rating was enlightening. Suspect they're in no rush but to ensure he gets into some key races he'd want to get some runs on the board early.

I know I'm on my own here, but I've watched his first up run a few times and I honestly think the horse had every chance. The key factor is that the race was run very fast and they walked the last 600m. He got out into clear running with plenty of time to run them down. His last 200m sectional was only average. In fact the winner of the 2500m race on the same day ran faster last 200m.

A plus is Beau Mertens.. this ride will be crucial to his jockey premiership chances. You know he will be trying. If they were going to give it a quiet run they wouldn't have put him on.

I was also taken by the first start and think he's worth a go today and following going forward.

As such took 60's for the cup with laddys boost last night. If he runs as I expect today doubt anything near that is available afterwards.

If he was fourth run in and ready and expected to fire this would all be true.
The thing is it was the horse's first run in two years.
With that in mind the run was just fine.

The run was just fine. Just making the point that I thought the horse had every chance first up. Some people believe he wasn't trying. I disagree.

Was given a very soft run imo, only really cranked up from the 300 - as we might expect from the camp, esp given the time away from the track.

My query is is he ready for 2km or might he already prefer another furlong?

Just had a look at the replay.

Think he wants further than 2000.

Do agree last start was more like a trial and could of Won had been set for the race.

The Jock probably had instructions to put him to sleep back in the field and just work him home nicely.

There may be an early indicator today if he is there to Win and that would be if he settles midfield rather than at the tail.
