In the not too distant future progress will have gone so far that robots will do all the work a human other wise will do.

It will probably happen in my working life, almost certainly in a 40 year olds grandchilds life.

There will need to be a liveable wage as opposed to the dole although basically the same thing.

This liveable wage will have to be large enough that it does not just cover expenses but also covers people being able to actually live entertaining lives.

This liveable wage will obviously have to be paid for via taxes on the Robot dominated industries.

Those on the Conservative side of politics do not believe in a liveable wage.

iveable wage is very variable obviously , depending on factors such as family size, area, lifestyle choices, medical bill etc. It is amazing how little people can survive on.

These figures are for retirees therefore not applicable to people of working age but maybe a starting point. Also they assume home is owned outright which it is not in most cases, that or rent is a massive expense

What is considered a modest and comfortable retirement lifestyle for retirees?

A modest retirement lifestyle is considered better than the Age Pension, but still only able to afford fairly basic activities.

A comfortable retirement lifestyle enables an older, healthy retiree to be involved in a broad range of leisure and recreational activities and to have a good standard of living through the purchase of such things as; household goods, private health insurance, a reasonable car, good clothes, a range of electronic equipment, and domestic and occasionally international holiday travel.

Both budgets assume that the retirees own their own home outright and are relatively healthy.

Budgets for various households and living standards for those aged around 65
(March quarter 2017, national)

   Modest lifestyle  Comfortable lifestyle
  Single Couple Single Couple
Total per year $24,250 $34,855 $43,665 $59,971

Djebel...   A Good one .
As a young man my generation was in big demand for so many labouring type work that we could work 24/7, if we wished .       Some of us did go over the top and had little time left to even sleep.
I was recently discussing this with my son and we did a "look back "
and comparing with today .   UNREAL but almost everything I mentioned is not available today.
Washing the Soft drink bottles to recycle ...    Gone
Labouring at the large Emmco Factory ( formerly a munitions spot)
where washing machines etc were made ...           Gone
The Local Abattoir                                Gone
The Bloomfield Psychiatric Institution           Gone
Plus many more, in the orchards, fruit , pea , potato = gone to machinery
Your point is a real worry for the future , especially when so much clerical type work is now offshore.

It's a crock of sh!t.

My son is studying full time, and works 3 jobs - has work as a labourer, bar attendant or clerical work, whenever he has the time, and mostly on weekends.

He runs a car and goes on holidays whenever he wants ... he's got more money in the bank than any of my kids!

He's simply not satisfied to earn "a liveable wage".

There is plenty of work, for anyone who is prepared to get outside their comfort zone and have a go.

Alternatively, for the committed socialist who believes that the the state owes them a living, try North Korea, they have a system that might suit you!
In reference to every post in the Trump thread ... "There may have been a tiny bit of license taken there" ... Ok, Thanks for the "heads up" PT!

Dr E.      >>    I don't think your are allowing for certain areas being more affected.      > Regional areas especially are disadvantaged .
I note you are mentioning one of several children so maybe he is the exception rather than the rule .
I have 3 sons .. none work for others and are not on welfare . The youngest retired at age 45...   ( a Lazy bastard ) and I tell him so BUT ,   They all did very well financially in their chosen fields ( I.T ) 2 the other on acres.
Their gold mine came out of Sydney Real Estate capital gain dating back from 1989.
All things considered I feel we must admit it is getting harder for the young every day , especially for those who lack the guidance and ability to realise they have to deprive themselves of quite a lot to go forward and save their finances for the most important areas of life .
Buying a home comes up NO 1 .

you have a realistic view Macca, I reckon manufacturing is probably 10 % of what is was in your time, if not less. Some jobs have been created in the service, food industry, I still don't understand how there can be thousands of cafes, full of people, and the country does not actually produce anything. However overall there are many less jobs available.

As usual Dr E is spouting a lot of angry, uninformed rubbish, talking out of his bum as usual

In the society we live in today, where much of the population are groomed to be pathetic entitled complaining parasites, you would expect that he is not The Rule ... and it doesn't matter, it IS possible to work - there has always been money in doing what other people don't want to do, and there always will be. If more people had a go, the economy would benefit, and then there would be MORE work, and MORE well paying jobs, and so the cycle continues ... However, we are on a downward spiral to 3rd World status if we believe that everyone is entitled to a hand out, and if you have trouble sleeping and need animal therapy, you should receive the NDIS. How about welfare for the needy, crazy as it may sound! ... we will be bankrupt as well as infested by a Muslim plague ... they love all that lovely free money that we give them, and best of all you only need to lie to get it ... and they all have a Masters in THAT!Thumbs Up

That is a growing debate in many countries, even the USA, and already implemented in some places

Jobs will not be a guarantee in some people's lifetime, and not because they are all bludgers. It is a genuine concern

Sadly correct PT .       . The added handicap is the explosion of dysfunctional families who are increasingly welfare minded and totally dependant.       . The mentality is the best Ipad etc, motor vehicle and of course the chemical intake as if it were their entitlement.

The gap widens and I don't see who has the answer..

The boom industry in the 21st century will be Health Care maccamax, and the major part of it, mental Health Care - they will be looking for consultants like you! ... pretty soon the NDIS will cost more than all other forms of welfare combined ... and we WILL fund it, and there will still be a disproportionate percentage of socialists trying to work out how to "get on it" rather than "get a job in it" ... because of course, they are entitlement to it!Clown

I have seen so many shocking blunders in Health care .    The NDIS will be so easily rorted and the big beneficiaries of course will be those wonderful caring people called medical providers .      > Their signature is similar in power to that of God, so prepare yourself.
Already the various groups are lining up for acceptance into the NDIS scheme :-     Sex workers for the crumpet deprived does attract most attention over others.

Dont worry Isaac we wont need a mandated living wage. We have a newly elected PM sent by God, and an economic miracle is just around the corner. His God will ensure it is so.
