How much would he have won by if he had the support of his party from the outset......he polled incredibly well with basically no party or media support. The tabloids hounded him, as did more left-leaning papers like The Guardian.

Macron's party set for huge French parliamentary majority

President Emmanuel Macron's fledgling party is set to trounce France's traditional main parties in a parliamentary election and secure a huge majority to push through his pro-business reforms, projections after the first round showed on Sunday.

The vote delivered a further crushing blow to the Socialist and conservative parties that had alternated in power for decades until Macron's election in May blew apart the left-right divide.

With 90 percent of voters accounted for, Macron's Republic on the Move (LREM) and Modem allies had won 31.9 percent support, Interior Ministry results showed.

The conservative party The Republicans and allied center-right Union of Democrats and Independents held 18.9 percent, the National Front 13.8 percent and the Socialists 7.45 percent.

Pollsters project Macron's alliance could win as many as three-quarters of the seats in the lower house after next week's second round of voting.

That would give France's youngest leader since Napoleon a powerful mandate to make good on campaign pledges to revive France's fortunes by cleaning up politics and easing regulations that investors say hobble the euro zone's second-biggest economy.

"France is back," Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said on French TV. "Next Sunday, the National Assembly will embody the new face of our republic."

Voter turnout was a record low for parliamentary elections in the post-war Fifth Republic at 48.6 percent, taking the shine off Macron's margin of victory in the first round.

Both the Socialists and the conservative Republicans urged more voters to cast their ballots in the June 18 second round, warning them against allowing too much power to be concentrated in the hands of one party.

Macron professes to be of neither right nor left. His one-year-old LREM party fielded both seasoned veterans and political novices including a former bullfighter, a fighter pilot and a former armed police commander.

"It's a renewal of the political class," said Jose Jeffrey, a Health Ministry administrator who voted LREM.

"UNPRECEDENTED SETBACK"

Projections by three pollsters of LREM's tally after the second round ranged from 390 to 445 of the assembly's 577 seats - potentially the biggest majority since president Charles De Gaulle's conservatives won more than 80 percent of seats in 1968.

Macron, a former investment banker, wants what supporters describe as a "big bang" of economic and social reforms, including an easing of stringent labor laws and reform of an unwieldy pension system.

The pro-European leader's program enjoys strong support among liberal, well-educated voters in France's big cities, but he is less popular in poorer areas where industry is in decline.

Sunday's projections pointed to another torrid night for the two main traditional parties, which have suffered high-profile defections to Macron’s government, as well as the far-right National Front.

The Socialist Party suffered in particular. Its chief, Jean-Christophe Cambadelis, confirmed he had been eliminated from his long-held Paris seat, a symbol of his party's stunning demise after five years in power. Benoit Hamon, its failed presidential candidate, was also headed for the exit door.

Cambadelis acknowledged that the first round marked an "unprecedented" setback for the party, set to win a paltry 30-40 seats, and the broader left.

"It is neither healthy nor desirable for a president who gathered only 24 percent of the vote in the first round of the presidentials and who was elected in the second round only by the rejection of the extreme right should benefit from a monopoly of national representation," Cambadelis said.

Francois Baroin, who led the campaign of the conservative Republicans, projected to win 80-100 seats, echoed the sentiment.

National Front leader Marine Le Pen, who led the voting in her northern constituency, called the huge abstention rate "catastrophic" and urged supporters to turn out in a week's time.

Pollsters projected her party, which is still reeling from her disappointing showing in the presidential run-off vote against Macron, will next week win just a small handful of seats - perhaps as few as one.

Among the LREM political newcomers who went through to second round were his key ministers and a retired bullfighter.

Do you reeeeally think that's why young people voted for Corbyn?

Are you saying the leftist education system is producing political left leaning young voters stayer? i read a short piece in the guardian today where the writer asks 'why schools dont teach kids about politics' .

the young dont generally vote (her point was because they feel uninformed in the whole political scene and dont bother) . but it was interesting...3 hrs later im reading a bunch of stuff thanking young voters for turning up and voting...it was them that made the difference.

It was weird all round. lots of different parts are moving these days in politics.

Is that a serious question?? The schools and unis are churning out young socialists, because socialists dominate the education (even tertiary) system. Socialism is all about the state over individuals, and "education" is always one of the main ways of making that vision happen. Nothing new in that - that's how socialism works since day dot.

it was a serious question, i was suspicious of that (socialist ed) especially as ive read similar 'complaints' elsewhere. i look at what daughter learns, esp with projects, and i can see the bent.

I just wasnt too sure. either way...i dont think its anything radical. not yet anyway. does it ramp up as the years progress - eg from primary school to yr 12?

Ummm, in the 90s I had 3 boys in high school in Qld. The things I remember were when they were all educated on how to fill in a dole form, were told they should ignore their parents on most topics (even though the education department blamed the parents for the lack of education of children) and to not just blindly believe they were heterosexual, in fact they were told to explore their sexuality.

Good luck.

I went to high school in Queensland in the 1990s and call bullgelati on every aspect of your post. If any of that actually happened, that particular school failed, not the system as a whole.

Bribie Island High, ask around before calling BS.
They might even remember the teacher who used to teach the sex education classes. He died late the same year from a long but 'unknown' sickness. That should jog their memories.

I started with nothing and still have most of it left

‘Enlightenment values’: Austria enacts anti-burqa & compulsory integration law

A controversial integration law that will fine women for wearing face-concealing Islamic dress from October, and deprive of benefits migrants who fail to take language lessons has officially been enacted, after being rubberstamped by the President.

“Those who are not prepared to accept Enlightenment values will have to leave our country and society,” reads the text of the law that drew thousands of protesters to the streets earlier this year, before it was passed by a centrist coalition last month.

Women who will wear Islamic veils – either the burqa or the niqab – in public places, will face a fine of €150 ($168).

More generally, newcomers who expect to stay in Austria, will need to enroll in a 12-month “integration course,” which includes German language lessons, if they are to receive their welfare benefits.

They will also be expressly forbidden from distributing incendiary radical materials, and are encouraged to volunteer before they can get their work permits, so that they are better prepared for life in the workplace.

More than 90,000 people have arrived in the Central European country since the start of the migrant crisis in 2015, most of them from Muslim-majority countries outside of Europe.

The law was opposed by the left-leaning Green Party, which said that it scapegoated refugees, and the nationalist Freedom Party, which called it a window-dressing for deeper integration issues and said it had been designed to stop its rise in the polls.

The centrist coalition promised that the legislation would offer a holistic approach. It has since collapsed, triggering an early election in October.

“Work is one of the most important factors for successful integration, which is why we are not only breaking down language barriers with this policy – we are also creating a continuous integration concept for the first time,” said Social Democratic politician Alois Stoger back in May.

France was the first EU state to introduce a similar ban in 2010, levying an identical €150 fine. It has since been copied in other countries, including Germany, which has also pushed through a prohibition of face coverings for state employees.

If the Saudis get away with trying to grab Qatari assets, they might end up being the new proprietors.

We could have told them that! ... people smugglers are not charity workers!!!Stern Smile

EU admits hardly any migrants reaching Europe are refugees as it toughens deportation talk

EU DIPLOMATS today admitted that hardly any of the people arriving in Europe on boats are genuine refugees as they vowed to quicken up the rate of deportations for failed asylum seekers.

European leaders are expected to back significantly toughening up the policing of the continent’s outer borders when they meet for an EU Council summit in the Belgian capital tomorrow.

In a letter to EU heads of state its president Donald Tusk said that “illegal arrivals” to Italy had rocketed by 26 per cent over the last year and urged them to approve more cash to train and equip the Libyan coastguard.

Eurocrats ultimately want the Libyans to take over the entire search and rescue operation in the central Mediterranean, believing that this is the only way to smash the business model of smuggling gangs.

That would mean migrants saved at sea would be taken back to North Africa rather than being shipped to Europe, which currently happens if they are rescued by a vessel operating under an EU flag.

Currently people smugglers pack people into unseaworthy vessels, knowing that they only need to get them out beyond Libyan national waters and into the central Med where they will hopefully be picked up by EU search vessels.

2017 EU TERRORISM REPORT: 142 FAILED, FOILED AND COMPLETED ATTACKS, 1002 ARRESTS AND 142 VICTIMS DIED

In 2016, a total of 142 failed, foiled and completed attacks were reported by eight EU Member States. More than half (76) of them were reported by the United Kingdom. France reported 23 attacks, Italy 17, Spain 10, Greece 6, Germany 5, Belgium 4 and the Netherlands 1 attack. 142 victims died in terrorist attacks, and 379 were injured in the EU. Although there was a large number of terrorist attacks not connected with jihadism, the latter accounts for the most serious forms of terrorist activity as nearly all reported fatalities and most of the casualties were the result of jihadist terrorist attacks. Explosives were used in 40% of the attacks and women and young adults, and even children, are playing increasingly operational roles in committing terrorist activities independently in the EU. Most arrests were related to jihadist terrorism, for which the number rose for the third consecutive year. Also, the European Counter Terrorism Centre at Europol supported 127 counter terrorism investigations in 2016, which shows a clear indication of the growing range of jihadist activity.
