I would be very surprised if this horse is at his top yet, he may win on natural ability alone but imo the best is yet to come, I hope so for OZ racing's sake.

Good win!! Too good for that lot.

Slow to begin, settled near the rear, rounded them up pretty easily.

Stablemate did a good pacemakers job in front. Nice warm up for Ascot at a very good price. I think he hit 30 odd in running at Betfair.

Too good for that stable, should be with Weiry.

You also have to look at the penalty he carried so he was 9.6 to every other horse on 9.3.  The 3rd horse had run 2nd in the British Champions Sprint G1 at his last start but was also first up from a long spell.  Still he is a 5yo English time and Merchant Navy is a November foal and a three year old to Australian time so maturity was on the other horses page.

So in reality Merchant Navy had a few reasons to get himself beaten so he ran well.

I can't believe the price he started.
I happily took $3.90 and that was with the BOOST.

We won't get those overs again.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left

Time. 1-11-82, by the track clock, reasonable for undulating track?

I expect this is why Merchant Navy blew in the betting.

O'Brien said: "We've had Merchant Navy for only a short time and I'll be surprised if he's done enough to win.

"We'll be delighted if he runs a nice race. We're going to learn more about him and he should come on well for the run. Royal Ascot is the plan."

A task for somebody today -

Has any horse from the Australasia that has been banished to Ballydoyle ever failed to win a group 1 race over there ?

I can't recall him having a run over there? From memory l think he had a setback so they decided it was best to retire him and send him back here for stud duties.
