Let's clear up some misconceptions being aired around here.

1.  "being gelded for the sake of it".

The type of surgery and/or rehabilitation for an injury of this nature first requires a long period in a confined area.  And then a long spell.  The likelihood of full recovery is reduced if the patient is an entire because it's difficult if not impossible to keep feed up to it without the horse piling on weight and getting heavy over the neck and shoulders.  The percentage of entires that successfully return to racing is hugely less than is the case with geldings

2. "if the trainer wants to geld he is probably not confident he will be a sire".

If that was the case the colt would have been gelded long ago.  Moreover, post-race but before the injury surfaced, the trainers expressed a clear desire to keep him entire.

3. "bear in mind, Special Bond did stand briefly in WA, and was not successful, so opinions of your horse, if he were to stand in WA, may be colored by this".

Special Bond never ever stood at stud in WA, but rather in Victoria where he served some very ordinary books if only because he never raced in the Eastern states.  However he was a dual stakes-winner in WA, several of his daughters have successful progeny running there, and there appears no real lack of appreciation for the horse in that State.

But having said the above let me add that I certainly appreciate the opinions and best wishes extended by members.  Thumbs Up

Bad luck Runfer. I've really enjoyed following Money Maher and thought he ran an absolute bottler in the Derby. All the best for the convalescence, nads or no-nads.

Latest news isn't so flash.

Money Maher has now won three stakes-races, but sadly tore a suspensory ligament in the SAJC Derby so faces a very long recuperation period if he's ever to race again.

And just this morning we were obliged to authorize euthanizing of his dam Treasury Notes who suffered organ failure and was refluxing litres of blood and fluid.  The mare hadn't been entirely well for about 18 months despite continual efforts to identify the cause of her problems.

The mare only had one other foal, a 2yo filly by Skilled who's with Money Maher's trainers in West Australia.  Hopefully she'll prove worthy of carrying her strong female family into the future.

So sorry - that's horrible news. I hope you can take some solace in having bred a horse of the calibre of Money Maher and that Money Market can be a success both on the track and carrying on the dynasty.

Hi again everyone.  Here's a positive update on Tom aka Money Maher.  Fingers crossed.

Hello Allan and Cheryl,

Money Maher underwent a routine leg scan yesterday and the vet said he couldn't be happier with the gelding's recovery from injury and has given him the official all-clear to commence fastwork. The four-year-old hasn't missed a beat since his return from his long spell and has somewhat surprised us by the ease in which he has completed all of his work so, seeing as he has ticked off all of the boxes for this early stage of his prep, he'll have his first set of pacework on Friday morning. We're likely to get the leg re-scanned after he has had a couple of track gallops and is close to trialling and, all things remaining well, we're likely to give him a couple of runs over 1200m and 1400m after that before (touch wood) targeting stakes races over May- June.  We have plenty of options open to us and will be able to map out a plan for him after he races and we can assess how well he has come back!

Regards,

Pearce Racing

Money Maher resumes on Saturday over 1200m at Ascot, almost 12 months after sustaining that torn suspensory ligament in the SA Derby.

Fingers crossed he gets through the race ok.

Resumes on Saturday over 1400m at Ascot.  Might be a gallop or two short of being in with a chance, but so long as just he gets through it we'll be happy.
