Gailo Chop's new lifeAs a racehorse, he was as honest as they come, a multiple Group 1 winner who raced across three continents, collecting just shy of $4.5 million in prizemoney. The OTI Racing-owned Gailo Chop was undoubtedly a star on the track, but in retirement he's proving just as successful off it. Now calling a property at Cardinia, southeast of Melbourne, home, the runner-up to Winx in the 2018 G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes is about to embark on a new life. In three weeks' time 'Gailo' will be back in the limelight, this time as a show horse after an off-track transformation at the hands of legendary show horse producer Dale Plumb - the man known as the 'godfather' of off-the-track horses. "He looks like a show horse, he's ready to go," Plumb said. It's an exciting prospect for Plumb, who has worked with hundreds of thoroughbreds, but none have been quite as popular as Gailo. "I've never had a horse as well known as Gailo Chop before," he said. "We've had hundreds of horses but never this high a profile one. "He's been very easy, he took to it straight away."After months of preparations and a debut delayed by COVID restrictions, Gailo will be out to impress at a show horse event at Werribee's National Equestrian Centre on the first weekend of December. And Plumb says the graduate product of OTI's Welfare Program won't be there to make up the numbers. "Some never make it, some take a long time, but Gailo's been great," he said. "I think he'll do very well in the thoroughbred class, he'll still go OK in the open section. "He's got the quality and the movement to certainly be up in the top lot, he is a very nice horse." Away from the hustle and bustle of racing life, the former Matthew Williams/Darren Weir-trained galloper is loving his new-found change of pace. "Everything is going nicely," Plumb said. "They're in a routine while racing, with trackwork and that, but with showing there's no real routine, and if they can cope with that, they're usually fine." Gailo's connections have kept a keen eye on their former galloper's progress and are sure to be cheering their boy on as he begins this new chapter post-racing. |

Pity , he had a year of hurdling and a couple of years of steeplechasing in him , a few years of rounding up cattle and 5-6 years of ploughing the paddocks .

Multiple Group 1 winner Gailo Chop will continue his career as a show horse after his retirement earlier this month. The import, raced by OTI Racing, arrived at the property of respected show horse producer Dale Plumb last Wednesday. OTI managing director Terry Henderson said that all connected with Gailo Chop are thrilled to have him continue in competition in his post-racing career. "He has had a magnificent racing career, and we're hoping he can take the sheer braveness and tenacity that he consistently displayed on track into this new phase of his life," Henderson said. "Dale is one of Australia's leading showing educators, having won many major Australian titles over the years. The ownership group unanimously agreed that he would be the perfect carer for their gallant horse." Gailo Chop retired after the G1 Kingston Town Stakes, bringing down the curtain on a career where he amassed almost $4.5 million in prizemoney. The 10-year-old galloper enters OTI's Equine Welfare Program, which was established in November 2019 to ensure the ongoing wellbeing of retired thoroughbreds following their racing careers. OTI has already rehomed 22 of its retired horses around Australia in the first 12 months. "As part of the program, we will maintain detailed records of Gailo's location, health and his owners. Through our fund, we are also able to provide financial support to ensure the ongoing care of our horses post-racing," OTI's Equine Welfare Coordinator Campbell Wansbrough said. |

Terry said this morning they expect to announce his retirement this week Also that they have a welfare fund for all their horses post racing, including for vet costs if needed & a full traceability system, which he's at a loss to understand why the industry don't implement it as it's very simple.

Heard Matthew Williams interviewed today on RSN.
Plans are to have the old boy resume in the Bendigo Golden Mile, followed by the Easter Cup, then all going well up to Qld for the Hollindale Cup & Doomben Cup. |

... not to mention the $9.30 place divvy. He would probably have ended up someone's dinner had he stayed in France. Fantastic effort to rehabilitate him from his injuries. His looks say it all.

He’s seemingly a few lengths off Spring G1 level these days.
But the Brisbane winter carnival might have a winnable race for him. Hollindale Cup & Doomben Cup double perhaps. |

Racing horses like these is how the industry shoots itself in the foot. No use us all complaining about PETA and their like, when it’s a known fact that they are a risk of breakdown. And then there’s the jockey to consider as well? I feel big changes are needed, in order to save the industry from itself 😕

Stewards interviewed trainer Matthew Williams regarding Gailo Chop's suitability to race after comments made by his attending veterinary surgeon Dr Andrew Cust on RSN Radio this morning. Matthew Williams advised that Gailo Chop (FR), whose last race start was in April 2018, had had a long preparation during which there had been no recurring conditions and the gelding had successfully trialled on three separate occasions. He further advised that the gelding had been under constant veterinary care which included scans of previous injuries. Matthew Williams advised that in his view Gailo Chop (FR) was fit to race.

I seem to remember Mummify in fine form leading up to the Cup. Was there an issue I’m not aware of? |

In this day and age, when racing is under the microscope from all the many protestors, and front page news when things go wrong, the industry should be very carefully watching these horses that have had major injuries, and then being brought back. Yeah, sure, in the good ole days it didnt matter. Just race them on and hope they hold up. If they didnt, no one noticed. Shove them bush and race them on. But you cant get away with that now. Too many eyes on the industry, and it needs to show a clean and caring image. No sticking the head in the sand and hoping for the best. Shunting crocks out bush where no one notices if they break down. If racing wants to keep a clean image , crocks need to be monitored,,,, Just MHO of course. |

Voodoo Lad a shame. Mummify qualified for his Caulfield Cup with some great runs. Got to 20 meters from the post and was a good chance to still place when he faltered. We rarely see very old racehorses racing today. I know Steroids are not around but they were the actual cause of breakdowns in decades past .
Pleas name me anything racing today that compares to Samson, Havelock, Future, craftsman,Lord and their ilk. They all raced fortnightly and most had well over 100 starts. Only Havelock died on the track as a 12yo. As I said, the old trainers had some drugs and old wive’s concoctions, but they did race more often and much longer than today’s pussycats. As for GC, he will tell the owners and trainer if he wants to go on with it. Nobody can make them competitive at Group level if they are passed it. As well I bet even if he is slower and not competitive, he will never be allowed by authorities to go country like some of the old good horses from long ago. I can list many of those old horses sold to race in country as 8-12 yo’s. |

They have strict guidelines, stringent vet checks, trials, scans etc etc.
Both of these horses have ticked every box so far. |
