... can't recall seeing the Swans beaten so badly (mind you, I didn't see last week's game).
A few injuries, a lot of players out of form, and no depth, up against a Bombers side that is playing a great brand of football, running and using their speed. Hurley has always been a very good player, and he has been in great form since returning from the ban, but he has never been 2 meters quicker than Buddy. Lance is either carrying an injury, or Michael is back on the juice! ... KIDDING!!! Unless there are big changes coming, I can't see how the Swans will be more than making up numbers if they happen to stay in the final 8 ...

It gets dumber still. It’s estimated that 40% of AFL attendees are women. Which means that since that incident you refer in 2015 roughly 10 million women have attended AFL matches. Yet in another post (on the same day, mind) you’re talking about “sample size”. Edited by Gay3 - 28 Jul 2018 at 10:02am |

I heard the Essendon and Hawks clash was a cracker, so I turned over and saw the final quarter.
Good to see the old enemy have their season dead and buried by the mighty hawks! |

Great to see the young boy from Sydney playing his first game since 2012.
5 knee reconstructions since his last game. Bloody outstanding effort to get back. |

I reckon it is high time that 'hitting the post' should be taken out of the game. The posts merely define the space that constitutes the goal, a vertical extension of the line that runs along the ground between them. The objective of the game is to put the ball from the boot over the goal line.
If the ball happens to touch the post in transit, so what ? If it rebounds back into the field of play, play on. If it hits the point post but crosses the line it should be a behind. If it hits the point post but crosses the boundary line it should be out of bounds. You could remove the cameras, the delays and all the grief with this simple rule change. It works for soccer. It would work in AFL too. ( I am proud to say I have no idea of what the rule is in rugby. Can some one enlighten me ? If a goal kick touches an upright but still goes into goal is it a goal or is it disallowed ? ) |

In rugby if the ball hits the post and still goes through it is a goal. If in general (penalty kick or field goal) the ball rebounds from the post it is play on

Thank you Horlicks. That is precisely the rule I reckon the AFL should adopt.
It takes the whole 'hit the post' issue out of play. It is one less rule . It removes the media from the equation. The rebound from the post would make for some exciting goal square action. Just to prove I am a complete heretic I would also do away with behinds. Why should anyone be rewarded for missing ?

The game has worked just fine for a hundred plus years , why do we need to keep chaning the rules?
They didn’t need a score review back in the early days, just took the umpires word. should just keep it that way, changing the scoring system would be the death of the game. |

Yep, same for pool, billiards, soccer , hockey, even if you hit the fence in running you can still win the race. |

Changing the rule that used to say the corner flag was touch-in-goal has revolutionised wing play in rugby league. The most astonishing tries are now scored that would have been pulled up.

By the same principle you would be opposed to the photo finish in horse racing. Just take the judge's word for it...Racing worked just fine for a hundred years before it was introduced... Besides the rules change all the time in AFL. Why draw the line at hitting the goalpost ?

whack Andrew Brayshaw in the chest when he broke the Fremantle

Isn't Gaff suffering from mental illness? ... surely he has a drug problem? ... he's clearly a victim, isn't he?
Based on all of that, he should get a 6 weeks suspension (the season) and a custodial sentence for assault.
Oh wait, is he being charged in the Peoples Republic of Victoria? ... in which case, he will be acquitted on all counts, reinstated as Brownlow favourite, and the citizens will be called upon to pay for his chauffeur, accommodation and protection ...

... oh, and based on video evidence, Brayshaw will be summoned on charges of "Attacking the fist of a player not in possession, with his face", and "indiscriminate bleeding".

8 weeks - uncontested, remorseful, seems right, hope to see both players back in action next year - move on.

I would make the suspension for assaults resulting in injury at least twice the length of the injury- for example if Brayshaw misses 8 weeks, Gaff out for 16 weeks.

So if he had hit him with ten punches, then stomped on his head, but Brayshaw was cleared to pay next week, what is the sentence? ... a reprimand?
I understand the sentiment, but it really doesn't work.

Brayshaw has accepted Gaff’s apology.
No bad blood between the pair, he has copped his punishment. Time we move on. |

Still doesn't work Tlaz ... they don't give people life for murder and a fine for attempted murder. You just can't wholesale determine penalties based on the injury outcome. It is the action and intent that needs to be penalised. The same punch, landed on another player might cause a split lip ... or it could have killed a soccer player!
If the AFL were serious, they would start suspending players for all of the off the ball punching and elbowing and jumper punching which is just sad and has always just looked soft and pathetic anyway. |

I did not say give light penalties for serious offenses which do not result in serious injuries. Read it again.

In this case Gaff deserved a long suspension even if Brayshaw got up and played on. But if Brayshaw misses 10 games through injury Gaff should miss 20. Jordan McLean would of course be out for life.

So what does Gaff get if Brayshaw had played on? It was still an "assault" ... do you think he would have got 8 weeks? ... 2 weeks? ... maybe a fine? ... Gaff has effectively been given at least 6 months, longer if Wet Toast don't make finals or are early round exits ... how long does a broken jaw take to heal? Sorry, it's a noble emotional response, just unworkable. I could agree if they made it a set penalty of 16 weeks for striking, regardless of the damage inflicted, regardless of the "degree" of the action ... they might stop the crap then.

Are the Dees blowing it again? Gutsy effort from the Swans but that’s another one that got away. Healthy percentage (and some competitors with the wobbles) might help but an awful run home could see them miss out again. Would be a disaster for that club.
