As I say, largely, not for everyone. I, for example, would be "outclassed" by silly percentages bet. A man has to know his limitations, as Harry Callahan said,

Plan (B) The Caulfield Cup is off the agenda for Gingernuts with a start in the Emirates Stakes on the final day of the Flemington carnival the new target for the Melbourne spring.

Gingernuts had been set to run in the Livamol Classic at Hastings on Saturday in a lead-up to the Caulfield Cup, but the meeting was abandoned due to safety concerns with the track prior to the running of the Group One.

With the kiwi cult horse missing a vital run, Te Akau Racing boss David Ellis said a Caulfield Cup start was now ruled out.

“By missing a run on Saturday, it means he won’t be ready for the Caulfield Cup or the Melbourne Cup after that so we have had to shift to Plan B," Ellis told NZ Racing Desk.

Plan B is the Emirates Stakes (Mackinnon Stakes) over 2000m at Flemington on November 11.

Ellis said if the Livamol Classic was rescheduled for a fortnight's time, Gingernuts would remain in New Zealand to contest the Group One otherwise they would look to a lead-up run in Melbourne.

“We are going to wait and see what decision is taken with rescheduling the Livamol and if it fits in he will remain here to contest the race before heading over to Melbourne to run in the Emirates Stakes.
“If for some reason they can’t reschedule the Livamol or it isn’t on a date that suits he will go to Melbourne a little earlier and have a lead-up run to the Emirates over there.”

So if Gingernuts was to stay and run in NZ, does that mean he has to travel the ditch the week of the Cox Plate?

I can not remember a NZ horse doing that and then running well in the Cox Plate.

That would be a great training effort!

What if his next run in NZ is abandoned again?

This is a bad joke.

Amatreur planning and management imo. I did suggest some time back that no run in Australia might be a mistake but having no options should something go wrong, eg horse gets a minor infection and has to miss a run, is a much bigger error on behalf of Te Akau Racing.

Can say that missing the Livermol was freak bad luck but surely after that he would have been on a plane to Australia this week? Caulfield Stakes would have been a good race for him & given options of back up into Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate or a freshen up for The Emirates.

I cant believe what has occurred here. I had been considering syndicating a horse with them - glad I didn't jump in. Agree, amateurs.

My bookie account says I still have the $6 pending from a month or so ago so hopefully he's wound up for the re-run.

He should come for the Cantala I suspect that's his best chance of a Melbourne spring Group 1.

He rode it the same as the previous start except that last Sunday was run on a good track so saving ground counted. The winner was behind Gingernuts with 200m to go. Not sure he would have got the gaps if he'd taken the rails run the winner had but it was definitely available. Instead he went 5,6 wide and covered ground, beaten a half head or a nose. At least Flemington's long straight is more conducive to backmarkers if he does come for the Cantala or Emirates.

Actually Gingernuts led the winner turning for home but not after that. He seemed to pick up once he got balanced but still, would the winner be a serious condender over here? I doubt it. Maybe Gingernuts was a run short because of the postponement but they all would have been.
