Gingernuts has returned to the University of Melbourne's Veterinary Hospital at Werribee due to complications with his recovery from surgery to repair his fractured pastern.

The popular New Zealand galloper was released from the clinic on Monday, November 27 and moved to a rehabilitation farm but concerns about possible infection have resulted in him returning on Monday evening so he can be closer to veterinary care.

Te Akau Racing, who manages the syndicate that own Gingernuts, made the news public with a tweet late on Monday night.

Gingernuts sustained the injury to his pastern at Flemington prior to the running of the Emirates Stakes on November 11.

He was immediately attended to by Racing Victoria veterinary experts before being transported to the University of Melbourne Veterinary Hospital at Werribee.

From David Ellis:

I can also report that Gingernuts is doing extremely well and the vets simply could not be happier with his progress.  He will head out of the veterinary clinic on or about next Monday to a local spelling farm. He will have about a month there before he returns home to New Zealand to spell at Te Akau Stud

Gingernuts was a casualty of the Spring Carnival, and judging by the quietness of this website in the last few days, it was only one of many !

From Te Akau:RE-Gingernuts

Despite some reports stating that Jerry is scheduled to have surgery today – that is not yet committed to today.  The priority today is a full CT scan to identify the seriousness of the issue and work through the medical treatment path that will be in his very best interests.

Once we have this diagnosis and we have discussed the findings with Jerry’s owners in the first instance, we will be able to update you – we understand and are truly appreciative that there is so much interest in Jerry’s well-being and again – thank you so much to everyone for your texts, your calls, your emails and your cards – to Sarah and Aleisha who sent the most beautiful get-well Jerry card – thank you girls, it surely brightened everyone’s day!

Fortunately the horse broke down at the race track where he was able to receive the very best care and immediately taken to a clinic for treatment.  This type of thing happens in a paddock its a whole different story.

Something that would be completely lost on the anti-racing people who pretend to care about the horses.

The owner of Gingernuts who collapsed during the running of the Emirates Stakes has recovered and is not expected to go to hospital for further treatment, while Racing Victoria vets have indicated that Gingernuts' injury is not life-threatening, despite being significant.

John Byrne, health commander of Ambulance Victoria said just after 6.30pm on Saturday that the owner will not need to be hospitalised after he was treated on course.

‘’It appears he had a fainting episode from what we assume was the shock of the horse being scratched,’’ Byrne said.

‘’But he’s almost fully recovered now and we expect that he will be released under his own steam. He won’t be going to hospital.

‘’He is being treated and managed by the medical assistance team and we anticipate he will be going home shortly. He’s recovered.’’

Gingernuts, who broke down when cantering to the gates for the Emirates, has been assessed at the veterinary clinic at Werribee after sustaining an injury to a front leg.

A Racing Victoria veterinary release that came through at 7:04pm said: "Nnear foreleg, fractured pastern, all signs non life threatening. Surgery Monday."
