Melbourne Cup weights and Caulfield Cup weights were released today by Racing Victoria.

From a WA point we have two horses nominated and been allocated weights for both races:

**Caulfield Cup**

Star Exhibit: 54kg

Boom Time: 52kg

**Melbourne Cup**

Star Exhibit: 54kg

Boom Time: 52kg

Star Exhibit is 20th in the ballot/order of entry for the Caulfield Cup and 24th for the Melbourne Cup.

Boom Time is 46th in the order of entry/ballot for the Caulfield Cup and 53rd for the Melbourne Cup.

The last WA horse to win the Caulfield Cup was Northerly in 2002. In 2016 Real Love finished 5th.

The last WA horse to win the Melbourne Cup was Rogan Josh in 1999. No WA horses ran in the Melbourne Cup in 2016.

Another speedy Western Australian ready to test the best in the east

Patrick Bartley

Published: September 28 2017 - 5:15PM

Form analysts across the eastern seaboard have learnt a valuable and often expensive lesson of under-rating Western Australian sprinters over the last few years.

WA has managed to play a sizeable role in producing sprinters that are more than the equal of those in Sydney and Melbourne, including Everest hopeful Vega Magic, weight-for-age star Black Heart Bart and Oakleigh Plate winner Sheidel.

On Friday night another classy Western Australian sprinter will attempt to win the $500,000 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Rock Magic is an eight-year-old and is very much in the upper echelon of sprinters in Perth, however the sprinter has gone the long way around before earning the plaudits of the Australian racing public.

Purchased for $80,000 over a year ago, Rock Magic has indeed repaid his connections, with the horse now earning over $1 million in prizemoney.

Wins at Canterbury and Scone were not going to make Rock Magic a headline act for his owners, Arrowfield Stud, so he was moved on to Western Australia.

"Can you believe it at his first start here in Perth he was beaten and then he went on to win his next five?" trainer Chris Gangemi said.

Rock Magic defied reports that he was a limited sprinter and was beaten just a half length in the group 1 Winterbottom Stakes by talented east coast sprinters Takedown and Sheidel.

"He probably wasn't at his best before the Ascot run and then we bought him to Melbourne last autumn for the William Reid and he had no luck at all and ended up running fourth," he said.

Rock Magic's form card was very much improved when he had a last-start victory over Scales Of Justice in the group 3 Belmont Sprint.

Rock Magic is at $20 to win the Moir, a price his young trainer puts down to the low profile of his stable.

"We are not that well known and if he was with one of the bigger outfits he'd be more like 10-1. We're not a big organisation, actually it's a family business. I only have 12 or 15 in work and they're owned by family and some outsiders but this hasn't stopped us being successful," Gangemi said.

Gangemi trains at Swan Valley, 20 minutes drive from Ascot, but has spent time with Rock Magic since he landed in Melbourne and reports that the horse is thriving.

"He's done everything right. He's eating and working well. I can't fault him. I'd just like to get a bit of luck, unlike last time we went to the Valley," he said.

Star Exhibit looked disappointing in the JRA Cup. Boom Time did well to run 3rd.

Lets hope Shiedel or Rock Magic can run well in the G1 Moir Stakes and win a Group 1 for WA

Yep cheers for that.

Also I have a friend who has $300 each way on Boom Time to win the Herbert Power. He said Boom Time is WA's best chance of winning the Melbourne Cup and his words were: "Boom Time is two lengths better then Rogan Josh"

I replied with: "Let's see how Boom Time's spring campaign pans out"

Hopefully Boom Time runs well on the weekend and all of the other WA horses too

Nearly won yesterday as well. Cool Passion is a good horse. I was on her yesterday and thought he was going to win in the last 50m. Nominated for the Winterbottom Stakes on December 2nd. Will give that a shake.

Jamal,

Here is one you need to add to your list : the 1928 Caulfield Cup winner Maple (1923 mare Roosendale (GB) - Honeywood)

She also won :

1926 WATC Sires Produce
1926 WATC Strickland Stakes
1926 WATC Derby
1927 WATC St Leger
1927 WATC CB Cox Stakes
1927 WATC Strickland Stakes

before coming East to the stable of Jack Holt for whom she won the Caulfield Cup before returning West to win the 1928 WATC CB Cox Stakes.

She was owned by Ernest Lee Steere who bought her from the Sydney sales for 280 guineas.  Lee Steere was also the owner of Eurythmic.
