Yep. Laing is considering running him 3200m first up.
Seems to think it works for the imports that come out here in the spring. |

One of the more interesting runners in Monday’s Adelaide Cup is Darabad, a French import on debut for Robbie Laing.
Darabad heads into the Group 2 feature first up, having not raced since August last year. Returning from a break over two miles - Laing’s kidding himself, right? Wrong. If anyone can execute this bold plan it’s the affable Cranbourne trainer. He has form. In 2009, he trained Sir Pentire to win Warrnambool’s Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m) at his first run in two years. It’s one of the greatest achievements I can recall in my 30-odd years watching racing. Darabad contests Monday’s $400,000 feature on the back of two trials, both on March 6 at Cranbourne. In his first trial of the morning, Darabad was sixth of eight over 990m, before winning over 1550m. “If you get them fit, they pull up well after their work, and they hit the line hard like he did in his trial the other day, then you should be pretty right,” Laing said. “He trialled very well. “He’s never raced below 2000m and I’ve found the same with him; he just gets stronger and stronger. He’s dour, has terrific stamina and can stay. “He’ll never win a race below a mile.” Darabad is bred to be a star. He’s by champion European stallion Dansili out of the brilliant racemare Daryakana, winner of the 2009 Hong Kong Vase, and is a half-brother to last year’s G1 Prix Ganay winner Dariyan (by Shamardal). He was bred and raced by the Aga Khan and trained by Alain de Royer Dupre, the man responsible for guiding Americain to victory in the 2010 Melbourne Cup. A four-year-old entire, Darabad has one win and three minor placings from seven starts. His only triumph was as Listed level, in a 2400m Handicap at Clairefontaine in August. “He’s a nice big horse, big clean-winded horse. There’s plenty of upside to him, he’s only lightly raced,” Laing said. “His unplaced run before we bought him was in the Arc de Triomphe trial; there’s probably no Arc horses in this.” Laing, who won the Adelaide Cup in 2004 with Pantani, has a good opinion of Darabad and is eyeing up the major cups during the spring with him. “We’ll see how we go in the Adelaide Cup then venture to Sydney and maybe Brisbane. If we have a bit of luck with him in his first and second runs he’ll go to the paddock,” Laing explained. Sportsbet has Darabad (Noel Callow) at $17 in Adelaide Cup betting. |

That was actually a pretty good effort to tough it out at the end of 3200m. His effort on Cup day wasn’t bad either.
Looks like Robbie is getting him fitter and these 2800m+ races look his go. There’ll definitely be a race win around for him soon. |

Jumping may be in his future in the longer term, but there should be some flat wins within his scope over the next 12 months. Something like the Duke of Norfolk Stakes 3200m at Flemington perhaps. |

What did you think of his run yesterday djebel? At face value it looked like just a plain effort. But for him to finish within 6 lengths of horses like Payroll & Jacquinot Bay, maybe it was just the type of run to keep him on point for the 2800m Bagot Hcp on New Years Day. |

Well this guy finally ran his first placing here in Australia with a 3rd today. I’m sure connections had loftier ambitions than a Sandown midweeker, but he stuck on ok today.
Getting fitter again and probably worth a go at the 3200m Duke of Norfolk/Ramsden Stks inna few weeks. |

Had his 2nd hurdle trial over 2400m today at Cranbourne and won by 40 lengths. Will still need a 2800m hurdle trial before he gets his ticket to race over the jumps. |

Scratched from the SA Grand National Hurdle today.
Probably a good call by Robbie Laing. Whilst he’s been winning hurdle trials by massive margins his jumping has been pretty ragged. Taking on battle hardened hurdlers like Honey Steels Gold & co over 3500m at his hurdle debut probably wasn’t the right race to start his jumping career anyway. Here’s hoping with a bit more education Robbie can get him jumping cleanly and we see him in a 3200m maiden hurdle somewhere over the winter. |

Robbie didn’t have a say regarding the Scratching.
He was withdrawn by stewards as he is ineligible to compete in this race. Didn’t meet the race conditions. Unsure why this wasn’t picked up at acceptance time |

VICTORIAN stewards have forced the scratching of exciting jumping prospect Darabad from Saturday’s $50,000 Grand National Hurdle at Morphettville.
Trainer Robbie Laing said he was told on Thursday that the horse hadn’t been passed the mandatory 2800m trial robbing the $50,000 feature of its most interesting runner. “He was going to be the excitement machine in the race, he was going to lead them by a big space,’’ Laing said. “He led by 25 lengths in a Sandown Cup and was only beaten two lengths, he’s got untapped stamina, that’s his go he can do that all day.’’ Darabad (black, red and white colours) finishes fourth behind Fanatic in the Sandown Cup in November. Picture: Getty Images Laing said the decision and reasoning for the horse’s scratching came as complete shock and has derailed his winter campaign. “The stewards tell me that three weeks ago when he won his 2800m trial, which it took them until yesterday (Thursday) to tell me, that they decided not to pass him,’’ the frustrated trainer said. “The thing they knocked him is the fact he goes at race speed, where as the others canter. “He’s had the four trials. In Victoria you have to pass over the 2400m and the 2800m. “In the 2800m trial he walked through one (jump) early when the jockey was trying to restrain him and he only won by a couple of lengths. The jockey said he didn’t get a really good look at it.’’ Laing headed to Warrnambool for another trial on Tuesday which has turned out a waste of the stables time and money. “We took him down to Warrnambool and the steward there said, “he has to qualify over 2800m”, we pointed out that he had, so he trialled over 2400m and won by 50 lengths and qualified. SPONSOREDCONTENT RESUMES ON SCROLL “They then rang me yesterday (Thursday) to said that when he trialled over 2800m he clouted a fence and they aren’t going to pass him. “They could have told me that at Warrnambool on Tuesday I would have waited 15 minutes and trailed over 2800m, instead we spent $600 on a float trip and spent five hours on the road.’’ Laing said it has cost connections more than just a start in Saturday’s Adelaide feature. “He was supposed to go to Bendigo on Sunday week but I’ve had a look and there is no upcoming trials so it looks like they won’t be seeing possibly the most exciting jumper in Australia, that’s after four trials and lot of mucking around,’’ Laing added. The Cranbourne trainer now heads to Adelaide with promising two-year-old Thorondor who was a winner here on debut before being narrowly beaten by promising filly Assertive Play last time out. “I told Joe (Bowditch, jockey) last start “don’t get to the corner and go for him, let him get through his gears”,’’ Laing said. “I think to everyone’s surprise the winner went bang and grabbed him but to his credit he didn’t lay down. “He seems a bit fitter and focused this week and should be hard to beat.’’ Laing also saddles up Ritorno who chased home boom sprinter Nature Strip at Flemington last time out. It’s a disgrace.
Just proves my point that Robbie Laing can’t train. The horse has no idea what he is supposed to do. |

Not sure he is to blame, He is not the one that gives them a ticket and his jumping was a lot better than in his trials. The Stewards I assume give them the ticket, They are the ones to blame. |

Horses who repeatedly put in a shorty are far from confident & highly likely to come down when they get that close to them. He didn't look at all happy in the run.

I suspect there is some truth in that. Hurdlers are never as good to watch as steeple chasers. Watch hurdle racing in the UK and Ireland and they always look like accidents waiting to happen. Watch a CHASE from the UK or Ireland and the horses absolutely respect what they are doing and it is a far greater spectacle. |
