What value does the Everest gain by being promoted to a G1? I don't see the point. I agree its become the best race in the world at 1200m but adding a G1 to the name does not bring anything additional.

I think it's inevitable it will be a Gr1 one day. Quality wise it's the best sprint race we have each year.
I'm not a big fan of an "invitational" race being a Gr1 and it's worth WAY too much money but on quality alone it's a Gr1. The entire racing calendar and number of Gr1's needs a re working but that's a whole other story.

I’ve got no doubt it should be a G1 but politics will get in the way

notice some racing wheelers and dealers, or movers and shakers , whatever , talking about deals to help the Everest being granted G1 status
wondering what people think of the Everest becoming a group 1 race.
IMO, it is the complete antithesis of what is Australian Racing, and rather, concentrates on the BIG end of town, ie, the heavy hitters buying "slots", @ $1.8m over 3 Years , that can be traded, as a commodity, so its not really open to all comers, rather an "Invitational", which actually leads into a pet hate of mine, the money being thrown at Sprints, rather than true traditional and or Classic distances and events Edited by Take2 - 18 Mar 2021 at 2:41pm |

Alot of bad takes in this thread I'm sure none of it has anything to do with sunk cost. It's been a good idea just accept reality.

Pretty sure. "The slot licensee is entitled to nominate and accept for one horse for the race by the race acceptances date. The Slot Licensors have the ABSOLUTE discretion to reject the nomination and acceptance of a horse that is not of Metropolitan standing" |

You sure about this ? If you have bought a slot and you want your own horse to run in it why should that horse even if rated "1" not get your slot ?

They obviously all have money.
We keep hearing about suckers having heaps on prepost beting, Somebody was advertised today as having $20,000 on Trapeze Artist at I think $8. That to me is just stupidity.

Group status is determined by the average rating of the first four across the line, over a three (?) year period.
This one will get group status, then struggle to find another 12 suckers to buy a slot.

What sort of deals are being done?
There's only three slot holders in the black. The rest would be mad not to ask for cash up front. There will be some desperados next year for sure - upwards of $1m in the drink, if they can't sell off the initial investment.

The ATC ultimately have final say on the horses that run. If, in their discretion, a runner is NOT worthy of running in the race, they will remove it from the field. Naturally stops the potential farce of a Horsey McHorseface running in the race etc....

If I were a rich man, I'd be a slot and then run a low class country horse in my slot each season, if nothing else it would show the reasons why this cannot be a G2 race.

Absolute disgrace. I understand that slot holders can run whatever they want to put in. It is not a merit based race but purely a sweepstakes for the rich and privileged who can buy what they want. Good luck to them. After ignoring Viddora for Graff and Home if the Brave shows there is no integrity in the selection of the horses only who can afford what. A disgrace. I will boycott the Everest. I will not bet on it and I will refuse to watch it. I will play in my sandpit and let those richer than me play in theirs. Disgusting and the media are playing into their hands.

Even Godolphin’s best sprinters are imports these days. What’s the point of the Australian breeding industry? Oh yeah, fast kiddies.

Why is that the pre-condition to a Group 1? Is it not just based on the average ratings of a race? In which case of course it's a Group 1. The Pegasus is a Group 1. The Arc is a Group 1 despite not allowing geldings. Last years winner was a gelding, 3 of the top 4 in the market for this one are geldings. Would it be more of a Group 1 race if those 3 weren't in it but Viddora was?

I said last year this race CANNOT EVER be a Group 1 because the conditions don’t allow the best horses around to compete against each other without barrier.
Instead the field is controlled by a group of rich and mostly agenda/self-interest driven individuals or groups, who will be biased by their agendas and compromise the quality of the field. Very simply: if Viddora does not get a slot, the race is a gimmick and not worthy of Group status, let alone Group 1. The race is struggling to build a field of last start winners, and a last start WFA G1 winner of 2 G1 wins cannot get a slot. You see she isn’t owned by the right people. She’s owned by battlers and there’s no political reason to put her in. Meanwhile rich associates of slot holders, internationals, and a 1400-1600m horse of Godolphin’s get a run. I’d be happy to be proven wrong as I’m a racing purist who wants to see the best horses racing each other. But no way how they sell this with relentless promotion on all the platforms under their influence, it hasn’t yet convinced me it’s any more than other restricted promotional races like the Magic Millions. There’s nothing wrong with those races, and Harvey too lobbied for the quality of the fields to influence Group 1 status. But he lost that argument for good reason. If the best aren’t able to access the race to race the best, it cannot be a Group 1. |

Yeah it definitely isn't coming from slot sales. No way they're running a field that size. Will come from the money it's generating most likely.

They would have got more publicity if they announced it next week, even though they are trying to take some gloss off the Cup it hasn't really worked.

Where does the extra $$ come from? Thought they'd already sold the slots for the next couple of years.

its announced now, so the infantile vlandys can have a di*k measuring contest with his melbourne counterparts and try and get some shine off the vic spring carnival. it wont work, but his big ego couldnt resist. it would have benn a better announcement at a later date when it would have got better traction. |

Prizemoney boost to 13 million next year, then 1 million the next two years. So 2020 will be worth 15 million.
Wonder why they announced today? |
