Together again... Regan Bayliss booked for Redkirk Warrior in July Cup at Newmarket (Image: Racing Photos)

Regan Bayliss will be reunited with the horse that has taken him to three Group 1s, Redkirk Warrior, in the July Cup at Newmarket next month.

The Lindsay Park training trio of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig in conjunction with the horse's Hong Kong-based owners decided on booking superstar local and Royal Ascot maestro Frankie Dettori for Redkirk Warrior's run in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. However, it didn't go to plan as the two-time Newmarket Handicap winner was never likely inside the final 400m and weakened to finish 10th, 12.5 lengths off Merchant Navy on Saturday.

"What we can put it down to is overseas travel," Dabernig told RSN 927's Racing Pulse on Wednesday

"Arriving there, all the signs were he travelled well, he was eating, hydrated, we were happy with his work.

"We did his final piece of work a week out from the race, then we tapered in [to the race].

"You could see from the 500m mark, we were clearly in trouble, and he didn't put his run up. Clearly the travel had an effect.

"After the race, we did all the normal testing of bloods, scoping, and it all came back normal and clear.

"We decided clearly there's a bit of water to go under the bridge, he'll continue on at Newmarket with the possibility of running in the July Cup on the 14th at Newmarket, which is 1200m down the straight.

"And we can confirm that Regan Bayliss has been booked for the ride."

He added: "There was no knock on Frankie Dettori.

"He was probably a victim of the horse not performing on the day.

"Regan's got an outstanding record on him, winning three Group 1s.

"Hopefully if the horse has had a bit longer to acclimatise and settle back in with a jockey that's familiar with him, hopefully we can get him back to what we know he's capable of, because clearly on his best performances down here, looking through the form of Merchant Navy, he would've been right around them."

Another start in the European campaign, of course, means a tighter turnaround to the Melbourne spring, and Dabernig said the picture would be clearer for Redkirk Warrior's ability to come back for the carnival down under following his July Cup run.

"That is the vague plan," Dabernig said of another tilt at the Darley Classic in the spring, a race in which he finished 11th last year.

"There's been a bit of thought of possibly leaving him there [in the UK], and bringing him back through Werribee's quarantine centre when the Cup horses come out.

"Then again, the horse will tell us the plan with him after the next run."

Meanwhile, half the slots available for the $13million Everest have been filled, but Dabernig is not concerned about last year's runner-up in the rich race, Vega Magic, missing his place in 2018.

"The horse is in terrific order," he said.

"When you look back and analyse the run in the Goodwood, history tells you it's hard to win two in a row, and he had come off a bit of a setback going into it.

"He had top weight, the track had deteriorated on the day, it was chopped out, soft rated but with a lot of wear and tear and he couldn't show his turn of foot.

"But he's in great nick - he's had the benefit of a short spell.

"We'll kick him off probably in the Bletchingly if the ground's alright on July 28, a weight-for-age Group 3 1200m at Caulfield, where he's undefeated.

"If he performs well, we'll go to the Memsie with a view of going to The Everest."

He added: "There's been interest in the horse all the way through.

"This year, different to last year, a lot have locked in their slots.

"The plan, after a race in the Bletchingly or around the Memsie time, something will get locked down.

"But at this stage he's not confirmed, but I think it'll be a formality that he will."

He was inconvenienced by Paul Hannigan on Sands Of Mali who was determined to find the nearside fence away from the actual race.

May finished closer had he been amongst it all.

Good news.
Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers
