The stewards have begun an investigation into the cause of the infection, and the timing of the notification of the infection, or suspected infection, by Cumani

That's right, they have started an investigation. Leave it to one of the forum's resident know it alls to assume the outcome of said investigation.

I hope your comment wasn't aimed at me BK. my last paragraph was copied from press release, not my words

Massive performance for a stable that's been in lock down and unable to work horses
2000m on 13 November, straight into a 2400m on January 1. Wins both comfortably.

I just received my email update from the syndicator regarding our mare that is now in work with Matt. Must say he is an impressive young man and knows what he is doing. Can't wait to see our mare back from her tendon troubles with him in the next few weeks. She's having a typical English prep and will be racing in a month or so

He has an interesting first starter over a mile in a maiden race 1 at Bendigo - Golden Authority that seems to be being backed off the map.

Here is one for Djebel. Matt Cumani has Our Covenant first up at 2100m after nearly 300 days tomorrow. It is nice to see some young blood doing something a bit different and hopefully it runs well.....A nose off Rising Red for Bonfield would be nice (I may have a little on RR also).

It might be worth pointing out that Our Covenant is contesting the OTI BM70 Hcp and is owned by the OTI group.  He could be primed for a first up score.

Cumani on strangles charges

BY BRUCE CLARK - @SNOWYCLARK
2 hours ago Horse Racing

Matt Cumani with Show A Star (Pic: Sharon Chapman)

Trainer Matt Cumani has been accused of failing to notify officials of an outbreak of the contagious disease strangles at his Ballarat property late last year.

Racing Victoria stewards late on Wednesday issued two charges against Cumani arising from his alleged failure to notify them of a strangles infection (and other infections or suspected infections) at his Ballarat training premises.

He has been charged under AR 175A that is conduct prejudicial to the image, interest of welfare of racing and AR 64K which is the failure to notify stewards of the strangles infection.

On 24 November last year RV stewards inspected Cumani’s stables and declared them an ‘infected place’ pursuant to AR64K(4). As a result, the stewards implemented a series of strict bio-security measures which were ultimately lifted in full on 22 December, 2016.

But stewards are alleging Cumani was aware this his horse Corrs was infected by strangles on October 27 and that he had veterinary advice to "regarding the presence of strangles (included other infections or suspected strangles infections) in his stables on (amongst other dates) 31 October, 2016 and 18 November, 2016."

The RV stewards allege that Cumani was aware of his obligation to notify RV of the strangles infection and suspected infections and did not do so from the period 27 October, 2016 to 23 November, 2016.

During this period, the Stewards allege that, amongst other things Mr Cumani:

a. failed to implement adequate bio-security measures to prevent the direct and/or indirect spread (and the risk of spread) of strangles within his premises and to horses at other places;

b. engaged in other conduct which compromised and/or had the potential to compromise the health of horses at his premises and elsewhere through the direct and/or indirect spread of strangles.

The RV stewards allege that Mr Cumani’s conduct was prejudicial to the interests, image and/or welfare of racing.

The second charge (AR64k) is leveled against Cumani re non-notification of the starngles infection and suspected strangles infections at any time between October 27 and November 23.

The charges will be heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board on a date to be fixed.

The growing Cumani stable has provided four winners including Show A Star at Flemington since the strangles enforced shut down was lifted in December.

He has runners at Pakenham Thursday night, and nominations for Anzac Day at Flemington.

Do they have and is strangles a notifiable conditions in horses? Eg. A doctor is bound by law to notify authorities of certain infectious diseases in humans???

The reason I ask, in humans it's the doctors responsibility (and also the path company if any tests confirm presence of and must forward results to authorities too) not the patient??

Appears to be the problem skippy123, the " patient" never informed the " doctor " ,
strangles very serious and contagious, informing and isolation a must asap.

Skip - by law the VET must inform the DPI (or equivalent) of that state or territory. There is no legal requirement for him to inform Racing Victoria OR their Stewards.

If Matt Cumani has a trainers licence he is expected to have familiarised himself with the Rules of Racing.

If the horse is in his care he, not the vet, is expected to inform Racing Victoria. Period.

Magnolian - I call Bulls..t!

A bloke who ate an apple in a garden once tried this line. He is licenced, he knew (or ought to have) the rules, he broke the rules - period.

No veterinarian would have offered such advice - that is ridiculous. You are suggesting the vet actively encouraged Cumani to break the Rules of Racing. For what gain for the vet.

That is absolutely absurd.
