Apprentice Brandon Stockdale burns arm, misses winning rides after trying to shake off flu at SandownMATT STEWART, Herald Sun BRANDON Stockdale did not feel the wrath of stewards at Sandown on Wednesday but Stockdale was still in “hot water”. And in hospital, undoubtedly cursing as two rides he was forced to forfeit scored under replacement riders. Stockdale was taken to Dandenong Hospital after badly scolding his forearm on a bucket of hot water. The leading apprentice had been suffering flu-like symptoms and was provided a bucket and a towel by medical staff after he dismounted from his ride in the first race. Stockdale placed the bucket in front of him and the towel over his head, an impromptu sauna, and burned his arm while cradling the bucket. Victorian Jockeys’ Association chief executive Matt Hyland said Stockdale “was in a world of pain”. “It’s quite a severe burn,’’ he said, adding he was unsure if Stockdale would be able to ride at Flemington on Saturday. Stockdale’s rides included Gold Fields, in race five, and Gun Chase in the sixth. Gold Fields won for Ben Allen and Gun Chase scored for Jordan Grob. |

Brandon Stockdale fined for punching filly14 minutes ago by AAP Victorian apprentice Brandon StockdaleImage: Getty Apprentice Brandon Stockdale has left Sandown $800 lighter in the pocket following two separate fines, one for misconduct.
Racing Victoria stewards fined Stockdale $500 on Wednesday for punching his mount Maid To Measure in the stomach following the running of the Moorookyle Park Handicap. He was fined a further $300 after failing to claim his 2kg allowance aboard Bit Of A Lad in a later race. Stockdale said he was frustrated with Maid To Measure after wasting in a bid to ride at 52kg later on the program, which led him to him punching the filly post-race. He told stewards it was something that would not happen again |

Russell under fire for 'completely unacceptable' punching of horseRSPCA says caution sends out wrong signal to jockeys4:46PM, AUG 29 2017 By Graham Dench RSPCA equine consultant David Muir has expressed his distaste for Davy Russell's behaviour on Kings Dolly at Tramore and his surprise that the jockey escaped with a caution from the Turf Club. A recent video of the incident posted on Twitter by 'drewboy' (@fireandskill), which has been retweeted nearly 10,000 times and received more than 1,600 comments, shows more clearly Russell punching Kings Dolly in the head with his right fist before the start of a handicap hurdle on August 18. The mare had approached the 'show' hurdle at speed and came to a skiddy stop, lifting Russell out of the saddle, but without threatening to unseat him. Muir said: "Davy Russell is not a bad jockey, and it was out of character, but hitting a horse like he did is completely unacceptable. It's a nonsense. "Where he struck her is a major muscular area and it probably hurt Russell more than the horse – but that doesn't make it acceptable. Horses, like any other animal, should be treated with respect, and punching one is disrespectful." A Turf Club hearing nine days after the event found Russell guilty of bringing the sport into disrepute yet, to widespread surprise and condemnation, failed to administer a meaningful punishment. Muir, who has worked closely with the BHA and British racecourse officials for years, added: "The Turf Club had more information than we have and have seen it from different angles, but resorting to a mere caution sends out the wrong signal to other jockeys. I would have expected a little more severity than that. "I would have thought that if it had fallen under the judiciary of the BHA it would have been treated more firmly. Historically they have treated similar offences as if they are unacceptable and given the person concerned something like a five-day ban." I have seen a couple of prominent jocks guilty of the same offence in the last few months Cabo, they forget they are on tv behind the barriers where they occur, but to my way of thinking wasting can be the cause of an number of indiscretions especially in winter months, but really there is no excuse.

Far to be preferred to certain "pilots" who perfected the art of getting horses narrowly beaten. One Sydney villain comes to mind. Beadman's record was phenomenal over a long period of time, one of the very, very few jocks who showed a profit at SP over a long haul. |

Oliver is shocking for hanging off their mouths, to the barriers, stands in the stirrups and hauls on them so the mouth is wide open. Even worse after the race. Newitt was done for kicking a horse in the stomach after a trial at sandown a few years back. Stockdale, if he is frustrated now over having to waste for rides, he may as well give up. His dad was an alco and was always drunk when riding trackwork, would always give them one quite hard with the whip if they didn't move out quick enough from the stables.

Apprentice Brandon Stockdale is unable to ride again this year after the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board confirmed a six-month suspension on Wednesday on misconduct and false evidence charges.
The 20-year-old is not permitted to ride again until February 14 next year but, in an agreement with his legal representative and Racing Victoria stewards, he can return to riding trackwork again from January 14 to prepare for his return. The agreement between the parties has also allowed Stockdale to continue working in a racing stable during his suspension. The pertinent rule, under AR 266 (2), permits a suspended rider to work in a racing stable under the strict guidelines that disallows any participation in riding in races, trials, jumpouts or trackwork. Stockdale, who has not ridden since March, pleaded guilty to one charge under AR 228 (b) for misconduct, in that he entered a Cranbourne property and stole goods before damaging a CCTV camera. He also pleaded guilty under AR 232 (i) for later giving false evidence to stewards over the matter. He was suspended for three months on each charge, with the terms to be served accumulatively. |
