The old undiagnosed bipolar made me vote rig. Who hasn't been there?
Former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer apologises for trying to rig 2012 council electionUpdated about 2 hours ago Sydney property developer and former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer has offered a "heartfelt apology" for committing multiple counts of electoral fraud, saying he acted "for love". Mr Mehajer took to the stand in court today ahead of a magistrate handing down his sentence. In April, he was found guilty of what was described as a joint criminal enterprise with his sister Fatima to rig the local council elections in 2012. He was convicted of more than 100 charges relating to forging documents or giving false or misleading information to the Australian Electoral Commission. It relates to submitting online enrolment applications. The 31-year-old told the court he did not intentionally try to rig the election.
"If I got in, it was a bonus." Mr Mehajer conceded what he did was wrong. "Looking at it now, absolutely," he told the court. "I am very upset and wish to extend a heartfelt apology." Bipolar disorder could explain 'notorious escapades'Mr Mehajer ran in the 2012 election as part of a group. "It was a big boys game, not for children and that's what we were," he told he court. He said they were "silly and didn't belong there". Mr Mehajer suggested his actions were done "for love" from his friends and to gain the love of the community. But then added "there's some offences I didn't do". It was revealed in court that Mr Mehajer has recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and is now on medication. His lawyer, Carolyn Davenport SC, told the court that that could explain, not excuse, his "lawlessness" and "notorious escapades". Wedding made family suspect Mehajer had 'serious issues'Mr Mehajer said he now had insight into his behaviour.
"Part of my bipolar is to have, have, have." Prosecutor Jeremy Rapke asked whether any of the property developer's family members had raised concerns about his mental health previously. "The wedding first of all was when they thought 'OK, you have serious issues'," Mr Mehajer told the court. His younger sister, Fatima, is also in court today awaiting her sentence this afternoon. She pleaded guilty. Mr Mehajer and Aysha Learmonth's lavish 2015 wedding caused controversy over the closure of a number of streets around his home. Mr Mehajer and Ms Learmonth have since separated. |

Most would acknowledge that Bipolar Disease is an extremely serious and debilitating condition. Amazing however that municipal councillors like he and those on the Gold Coast, Ipswich etc are particularly prone to the illness. |

There's a million mental illnesses to excuse yourself with these days, SC. And 2 million 10 years from now for the kids being raised to self diagnose these days. It's sad and unjust for the people that actually suffer through a real mental illness that it can be so easily exploited these days. Even in courts. Surely at some point a civil law system has to just stick with what's right/wrong/good/bad re an individual's actions within a society, and look after the society more than the individual.

I saw that somewhere on a news story. For every crime committed , the guilty manages to come up with an excuse. Not a valid reason , just an excuse. For him to claim autisim must make families of autisim kids feel pretty sad that its going to be used as a valid reason for doing those terrible things , when they know their kids just couldnt and wouldnt do that. Now its going to shine the light on this , and make all these family members look like prospective violent people. One case very recent they said the bloke was suffering a mental illness, but then it came out he was a nut case because he had been taking steroids for body building, but his family insisted it was the health authority,s fault for not doing more for him, in spite of him getting help and constantly not attending his appointments. Seriously, he was a grown man, and he took the stuff , and anyone with half a brain knows what it does to you, so why should it be anyone else,s fault but his own ??? Just about every crime these days seems to claim some sort of mental problem. ( A lot of them caused by drugs and booze which is their own fault ). When really, people just should take responsibility for their own actions, and give the genuine sufferers a break so they dont all get tarred with the one brush.

Seems that anyone who commits a crime these days, was suffering from some form of depression, anxiety or mental illness, etc ... which in the main is true, because normal people don't do that gelati.
So here's the answer - accept ALL of those pleadings as the reason for the crime, but not the excuse, and then line them all up and shoot them!

Bi Polar is treatable but co operation by the victim is difficult.
getting These sick people to consistently take medication is almost impossible. The Killer of the young Lady will be a Psychiatric on welfare. Most ladies who lose their life are to someone close & known to them .. Alcohol / drug induced madness and infidelity. ( Not necessarily in that order )being the main reasons REOPEN THE INSTITUTIONS and remove the cause from the Streets . The first rule in any illness is to remove the cause if possible. In Psychiatry the opposite occurs. The dangerous have been forced into the Community to Rape & Murder. |

Salim Shady gooooorn! Salim Mehajer sentenced to 21 months' jail for electoral fraudBy David Spicer Updated 5 minutes ago Former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer will spend at least 11 months in jail for rigging the 2012 local NSW Government election — the election that rocketed him into the public eye. He applied for bail while awaiting the outcome of an appeal against his sentence, however it was refused. Magistrate Beverley Schurr sentenced Mehajer to a maximum of 21 months in jail for 77 cases of electoral fraud stemming from the 2012 poll, describing the offence as striking "at the heart of the electoral system". Mehajer and his family bombarded the Australian Electoral Commission with false applications to vote in Mehajer's ward in the space of one hour in July 2012. Staff at the electoral office became "suspicious" of the large number of forms and it was later confirmed forms contained false addresses and more than 50 were forgeries. Mehajer was subsequently elected deputy mayor. Magistrate Schurr said the offence was at the high end of criminality for the crime due to the consequences and the planning involved. Earlier on Friday, his sister Fatima Mehajer was given a two month suspended prison sentence for related electoral fraud crimes. PHOTO: Fatima Mehajer (right) the sister of Salim Mehajer was handed a two-month suspended sentence (AAP: Dean Lewins) She pleaded guilty to breaching the electoral act by submitting false information to the AEC. In sentencing Fatima Mehajer, Magistrate Schurr said her actions "affected the reliability and integrity of the electoral roll". According to Electoral Commission rules eligible candidates needed to live in, or own, property in the ward they contest and be enrolled to vote in that area themselves. Both Salim and Fatima Mehajer listed their addresses as being a unit in Auburn but neither of them lived at that address. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-22/salim-mehajer-sentencing/9898398 |

Just read the above, and what's with the "cheap shot" comment? As most here and elsewhere would acknowledge, either depression or sudden lack of memory appear to be the excuses of choice these days - with elected councillors at the forefront along with those in the banking and finance industries. |

I've said it before, I'm happy to accept any psychological reason for people who commit crimes, I think it should be universally accepted as a reason, because everyone is a bit nutty, but especially people who break the rules ... but lets stop accepting it as an excuse or a mitigating circumstance, and don't allow the condition to diminish responsibility or penalty.
The fact is, if you commit an offence because of mental illness, you are probably never going to be rehabilitated, you are most likely to re-offend, and normally in a progressively more destructive way ... should either be locked up and throw away the key, or lined up in front of a firing squad.
Save a lot of time and effort in the criminal justice system, not to mention save money, and put a lot of psychiatrists, psychologists, councilors and other snake oil "victim" advocates out of work!

Poor bloke. My heart bleeds for himLike Doc says, most of us are a bit nutty, and sometimes those that are more nutty than us, do terrible things. But thats no excuse to let them off lite. Like the bloke who burned his wife to death in front of the kids. An 11 year old son tried to save her and was prevented. The bloke gets 15 years, as domestic violence murder isnt graded the same as murder , so they get short sentences. |
