Just to reiterate in my format what horseshoe has already posted.

G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes over 1 1/16 miles @ Tampa Bay Downs - Flameaway (Scat Daddy - Vulcan Rose) (10/1) led all the away in a boilover 1/2 length victory over heavy favourite Catholic Boy (4/6on) in a time of 1:42.44. Vino Rosso finished third to pick up his first qualification points. Flameaway however was not nominated for the Triple Crown races.

Next races - as we have the President's Day Long weekend to look forward in the USA

Feb. 17
G3 El Camino Real Derby over 1 1/8 miles @ Golden Gates Fields

Feb 19
G3 Southwest Stakes over 1 1/16 miles @ Oaklawn Park

President's Day Weekend

Listed El Camino Real Derby over 1 1/8 miles @ Golden Gate Fields, Albany, California - The filly Paved (Quality Road-Sirmione) started the 11/10 favorite and showed a fine pair of heels to blowaway the opposition in 1:50:04 becoming the only filly to win the race in 35 years. Unfortunately, this gal is not Triple Crown nominated nor will she looking at pounding the boys again as connections will try to balance a dirt/turf career in the future. None of the other pointgetters were TCrown nominees. The race looks like its on its last legs and it will interesting to see if it will be involved in the Road to the Kentucky Derby in 2019.

G3 Southwest Stakes over 1 1/16 miles @ Oaklawn Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas - California shipper My Boy Jack (Creative Cause - Gold N Shaft)(7/1) ridden by Ken Desormeaux came from way back on a muddy track to win by 4 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:46.00. Combatant picked up point for second for the third time with Sporting Chance in third place and favourite Mourinho (US). My Boy Jack moves into 13th place in the qualifying list.

The third race this President's Day Long Weekend was a race I missed reviewing. The event was the first in the Championship Series where the points garnered in victory would almost certainly lead to qualify place in the Kentucky Derby.

G2 Risen Star Stakes over 1 1/16 miles @ Fairgrounds, New Orleans - Bravazo (Awesome Again - Tiz o' Gold) battle for the lead with Snapper Sinclair and won by the shortest of margins in a time of 1:36.75 on a fast track. Starting at the long odds of 21/1 Bravazo regained his 2YO form when he was 2nd in the G1 Keeneland Breeders' Futurity in September. Bravazo is now the point leader and will probably be pointed to the G2 Louisiana Derby.

Next Qualification Races

March 3

G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Gulfstream Park, Hallendale, Florida

G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Gulfstream Park, Hallendale, Florida
Promises Fulfilled (Shackleford - Marquee Deli) starting at 18/1 led all the way and caused a major boilover in defeating the 2YO champion Good Magic (7/10on) into 3rd place. Strike Power finished second getting his first points in qualification. The season opening run by Good Magic was needed and he will benefit from the outing.

Next weekend:

Some nice prep races around the country.

G3 Gotham Stakes (1 mile) @ Aqueduct, Ozone Park, NY
G2 San Felipe Stakes (1 1/16 miles) @ Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, CA
G2 Tampa Bay Derby  (1 1/16 miles) @ Tampa Bay Downs, Westchase, FL

A  few more additions of note to what horseshoe has given us.

Originally posted by horseshoe horseshoe wrote:

G2 San Felipe Stakes: Winner On Protest Bolt D'oro From McKinzie 13/8 (Great Race) From my eye McKinzie will beat Bolt D'oro next time they run. Yes, I have to definitely have to agree with horseshoe here in that of the three preps runs on Saturday undoubtedly the strength of the Californian contingency was on display. It was a great battle down the straight - bumps and all. Bolt D'oro tops the standings and McKinzie is in 6th. Bob Baffert will probably avoid another clash like this before the KDerby so I envision that he will ship McKinzie out of SoCal and miss the G1 Santa Anita Derby.

G2 Tampa Bay Derby: Winner=Quip 25/1 Major boilover here but the last autumn's 2YO event the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes has now produced 4 return winners - Enticed, Promises Fulfilled, Bravazo and now Quip. Quip is in 5th place in the standings and also headed to Louisville.

Some other news which is of interest.

Mourinho (US) winner of the Smarty Jones Stakes and last start 4th in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park was euthanized on Tuesday. Sad...

Two interesting events from Europe which also had impacts on the European Road to the Kentucky Derby. The events were postponed because of the "Beast of the East" chill were held this past week. Gronkowski won the Road to the Kentucky Derby Condition Stakes @ Kempton Park and is headed to the US to either start in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct or the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. The other winner was Aiden O'Brien's G1 Breeder's Cup Turf Juvenile winner Mendelssohn who won the Patton Stakes at Dundalk, Ireland and is headed for the UAE Derby in Dubai. There runners are looking to pickup "real" US qualification points.

This weekend action:

G2 Rebel Stakes over 1 1/16 miles @ Oaklawn Park, Hot Springs

G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks (hmmm) - formerly the Spiral Stakes over 1 1/8 miles @ Turfawy Park, Florence, Kentucky

The first race is considered a First Leg of the Championship Series which carries 50 points for the winner. The Jeff Ruby Steaks was demoted to a "Wild Card" race and only carries 20 points for the winner.

G2 Rebel Stakes over 1 1/16 miles @ Oaklawn Park, Hot Springs

Lightly raced Magnum Moon (Malibu Moon - Dazzling Song) powered to 3 1/2 length win in 1:42.68 over Bob Baffert's trained Solomini with Combatant in 3rd picking up minor points again. We'll probably see Magnum Moon in the Arkansas Derby in April.

G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks (hmmm) - formerly the Spiral Stakes over 1 1/8 miles @ Turfawy Park, Florence, Kentucky

Non Triple Crown nominated Blended Citizen (Proud Citizen - Langara Lass) (6/1) settled in the back of the pack rounded tiring horses coming into the straight and came away with neck victory over Pony Up in 1:50.87.

This coming weekend.

G2 Louisiana Derby over 1 1/8 miles @ Fairgrounds, New Orleans.

G3 Sunland Derby over 1 1/8 miles @ Sunland Park, New Mexico

Much has been written already about Mendelssohn and his record breaking win in the Dubai World Cup thread. British bookies have him at 11/2 to win the KDerby.

G1 Florida Derby over 1 1/8 miles @ Gulfstream Park, Hallendale Beach, Florida

Audible started as the 8/5 favourite and unhurried early powered to the front as they entered the straight winning by a commanding 3 lengths in 1:49.48. Lightly raced Hofburg finished second and Mississippi was in third place. Catholic Boy disappointed in 4th but later was found to have bled and is now out of the Triple Crown picture.

This weekend is probably the best prep weekend:

G2 Wood Memorial over 1 1/8 miles @ Aqueduct, Ozone Park, NY

G2 Blue Grass Stakes over 1 1/8 miles @ Keeneland, Lexington, Kentucky

G1 Santa Anita Derby over 1 1/8 miles @ Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, California.

Other news.

Highly regarded McKinzie was withdrawn from the Triple Crown pursuit with an undetermined injury.

Justify (Scat Daddy (USA) - Stage Magic (USA)) wins G1 Santa Anita Derby, Bob Baffert has a serious horse here. A more than adequate replacement for McKinzie.

Second Leg of the US Triple Crown G1 The Preakness Stakes coming up this weekend.
KDerby winner Justify and 2nd placed Good Magic have been confirmed. This will be interesting!

Several other KDerby participant have also indicated that they will show up. Lone Sailor and DW Lukas has indicated that Bravazo as well as his other 3YO Sporting Chance will be there.

Quip, who bypassed the KDerby and lightly raced Tenfold are also preparing to start in the event.

Not sure if we will have a maximum field of 14 but given that Good Magic's connections are not backing off will make this race a bit more interesting.

Hi Carioca.

Dirt at Pimlico Racetrack! A little shorter at 1 3/16 miles.

Here's an good link which goes over the differences in the 3 Triple Crown Tracks.

The article is from 2013 but the info about trace surface - dirt indicates that the "dirt" is not the same everywhere. I guess its no different from the grass tracks around OZ.

Basically NYRA has made this a 3 day carnival with some nice races. One of which is the upgraded G2 2 mile Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes. Elizabeth Regina has her horse in the race so there is plenty of interest.

Most Interesting news from Belmont on Friday without doubt was the strong victory creating a new track and stakes record by Her Majesty, The Queen's Call To Mind in the $400,000 G2 Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes over 2 miles in 3:16.78.

Maybe a worthy of another overseas trip for the Melbourne Cup ?

Anyway, article and video:

Most Interesting news from Belmont on Friday without doubt was the strong victory creating a new track and stakes record by Her Majesty, The Queen's Call To Mind in the $400,000 G2 Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes over 2 miles in 3:16.78.

Maybe a worthy of another overseas trip for the Melbourne Cup ?

Nice horse Brudder. I recall seeing his mum race at Ascot as a precocious 2yo. She beat a filly that day called Margot Did. That mare produced a Gr2 winner in France last week called Mission Impassable.

Memory then developed mental problems at three and refused to race. Her progeny all seem to want further than sprint distances unlike their mum. She's also found a good nic with Galileo and his son Frankel by the looks of it ( 3 runners all winners all have Black Type ).

Read somewhere that Memory went to Galileo again 2017 so this kind of result might repeat itself in a few years.

A powerful sweep as they entered the straight and won in hand.

1:32.14 for the mile ain't shabby...
