Great week of racing coming up in Kentucky this week in the lead up to the Kentucky Derby. On the first stakes event for 2YOs is on the card in the Kentucky Juvenile. Most of the runners ran recently in the Keeneland meeting and were winners but there are also interesting entries who won at Laurel Park in Maryland and Marva who won in a deadheat at Gulfstream Park. On Tuesday Churchill Downs has carded a 1 1/2 mile dirt stakes race (Very strange...) Thursday has a couple of Turf stakes races. A mile race for 3YO+ and the other a sprint for F&Ms. Friday is a big drawcard day for the Kentucky Oaks with a supporting card of 5 graded races and of course Kentucky Derby day which has 3 additional G1s. |

A couple of interesting notes for the Kentucky Derby which deserve a mention on this thread. The Japanese runner Master Fencer qualified on the Road to the Kentucky Derby for Japan which is in the internationalization plans of Churchill Downs Inc. because now the race will be allowed for betting crazing Japanese Punters. However, co-mingled pools will not happen yet but maybe sometime in the future. Lani, the last Japanese horse to run in the KDerby in 2016 finished 9th, stayed on in the USA and later finished 3rd in the Belmont Stakes. Jockey Jon Court, at the age of 58 will become the oldest jockey ever to ride in the KDerby when he takes Long Range Toddy to the gate. This will be his 4th ride in the event. Jockey Julian Pimental from Columbia at age 38 will have is inaugural ride while veterans Mike Smith with have is 25th and John Velazquez hist 21st.

AA: JAYWALK is depreciating in form. Can't make a case for her. BELLAFINA looks like the outright choice. I like STREET BAND for a price. Larry Jones knows how to win the Oaks with a lady jockey.

Jaywalk has not produced thus far this season, unfortunately. On the other hand Bellafina has continued on probably will blossom onwards through this season albeit as a short favourite every start. Nonetheless the Kentucky Oaks will be a great spectacle this Friday!

Favourite Omaha Beach has been scratched from the Kentucky Derby after he was diagnosed with an entrapped epiglottis. Also eligible Bodexpress (2nd in the Florida Derby) moves into the field. Haikal also is doubtful with foot abcess.

With Winx retiring as one of the greatest horses of all time, I would have to say Win Win Win is a huge omen bet for the Kentucky Derby.

Bellafina has been installed as the 2/1 morning line favourite for the Kentucky Oaks. More likely she will start about 6/5. Jaywalk is at 8/1. After the scratching of Omaha Beach from the Kentucky Derby, 2YO Champion Game Winner has been installed as the new favourite at 9/2. Trainer Bob Baffert has three very good chance now with also Roadster and Improbable having showed high quality performances in the prep races. Weather should factor into the event as heavy rain is falling now in the Louisville area but should decrease into Saturday. Still the current forecast is 70% rain making it possible for a fourth straight wet first Saturday in May for the big event. |

Brudder, always look forward to your pre-race posts.
Am I being unkind in saying it doesn't exactly appear to be a hallmark field, or that the favorite would appear a risk at the distance? Over to you and other US form followers.

The prep season has not produced a outright favourite in what looks like someone will sweep the Triple Crown. Hence the open wide market now that the horse with best credentials will have to show up later in his 3YO career (Omaha Beach). What really is interesting is that the horses that qualified did so with far more points than in the past. Also a maiden, Bodexpress has now been included in the field and with the varying change in weather the track may be affected. There are some horses that are throwouts if the track becomes too wet or sloppy. One in mind is Long Range Toddy. On a fast, dry track he could be quite dangerous. Also there are some possibles that are late developing and may just be right as well hit the classic races. There are great stories all around but I continually look to trainer Bob Baffert who continues to produce outstanding 3YOs that peak in May and onwards. Given the obstructions he faced in the close of Santa His trio are so formidable that one must really take a close look to separate them I really like Game Winner. But his prep was really interrupted when the San Felipe Stakes was cancelled at Santa Anita. He had to travel to Oaklawn Park and I saw his performance when narrowly beaten by Omaha Beach and then he was a stride short against stablemate Roadster in the Santa Anita Derby. Had he a purrrfect prep maybe he would odds-on right now. But that is what makes punting in our sport so enigmatic. As now he comes into the race as favourite after two seconds and may prove to be colt that he showed last season. Time will tell. Also there are side stories with other horses who showed great form. Tacticus, Vekoma, Code of Honor. All have given reason that they deserve to try the 1 1/4 mile and be given a chance for stardom. I find the those that went to UAE and the Japanese entry a bit short of this calibre but there is no reason not think that it is impossible for them to trouble the more favoured entries. |

Lots of favorable conversation about CODE OF HONOR. Shug McGaughey is an expert at bringing a colt to peak form at the right time. An example is ORB, on a sloppy track, won the 2013 KY Derby 4 lengths faster than he won the FL Derby.

As the Kentucky Derby approaches, deaths pose existential questions for US racingA rash of deaths at the famous Santa Anita Park in California has left
many wondering about the future of horse racing in America Tank Team, Unusual Angel, Secret Street, Derby Treasure, Noise Mandate, Amboseli. There will be no statues built at Santa Anita Park in memory of those six thoroughbreds, or the 17 others who died during this torrid winter but if – or when? – the doors ever close on this famous old track, their names will be written in what many in the industry fear could be the final chapter of Californian horse racing. These are bloody times at Santa Anita. Literally. Over a three-month spell from December, 23 horses died at the track, either training or racing. Equine death has been a gruesome staple of American racing for decades but even an industry inured to ‘collateral damage’ has been shocked by the carnage and the condemnation that followed. There were plenty of excuses offered – bad luck, bad weather, ‘bad apples’ in the industry – and just as many promises to do better. Yet few within the industry are in any doubt it now faces an existential threat. California senator Dianne Feinstein has called on racing to be suspended at Santa Anita, while the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office announced an investigation into the deaths. Animal right activists are calling for the abolition of horse racing in California, an attainable goal in a state where the proposition system gives voters the power to write and enforce new laws. “If we don’t make racing safer I don’t think the public will allow us to continue,’’ says Rick Arthur, equine medical director at the California Horse Racing Board and one of the most respected voices in the industry. “We are one ballot away from being voted out of existence.” ... https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/may/03/kentucky-derby-santa-anita-horse-racing-california |

Country House is a probable for The Preakness at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore but Maximum Security DQ in the KDerby will not be entering and that is disappointing. Trainer Bob Baffert has indicated that Improbable will be pointed to the race. The three horses to receive automatic berths to the Preakness—Anothertwistafate, Alwaysmining, and Laughing Fox. Winner of his last six starts, Alwaysmining has been a force to reckon with among sophomores in Maryland. His victory in the April 20 Federico Tesio Stakes at Laurel Park awarded him a spot in the Preakness, where he will test graded company for the first time. Laughing Fox, who finished fourth, one spot behind Country House in the April 13 G1 Arkansas Derby, earned a berth into the Preakness when he ran in Arkansas on Derby Day to score the inaugural Oaklawn Invitational Stakes as part of Oaklawn Park's expanded meet. Connections are also likely to send him on to the Preakness. Anothertwistafate earned his way in with a seven-length win at his home track in the Feb. 16 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields, which was a "win and your in" for the Preakness and also awarded points toward a Derby start. He was then second by a neck in the March 24 G3 Sunland Park Derby at Sunland Park, and earned additional points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby when he again finished second in the April 13 Stonestreet G3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland. Also under consideration for the Preakness are multiple graded stakes-placed Sueno and grade 2 winner Signalman, neither of which entered as also-eligibles in the Derby after falling short on points. Joining them in consideration are Lexington Stakes winner Owendale, G3 Pat Day Mile Stakes winner Mr. Money, and Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) runner-up Bourbon War.

Brudder,,so are the connections of the disqualified horse taking it further ? Have seen a few mentions that they might go over the heads of the stewards if they are denied an appeal ?? Whats going on ?

From what has been revealed the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has denied the appeal from Maximum Security's owner Gary West. Last night, Gary West in return has indicated that he would "file a lawsuit in the appropriate jurisdiction". While much is at stake I think we will find that the KHRC has made the right decision with a a couple of issues that they created by no putting the INQUIRY sign after the finish of the race so that all parties concerned, owners, trainers and the horse racing public was aware that there was an issue.

So if the owners of the "first" horse appeal, and even if they take it out to a civil court , they cant win ??

Country House has developed a cough and trainer William Mott has taken the horse of the training list. That probably means the horse is out of consideration for the G1 Preakness.

It is extremely unlikely that Maximum Security will run in the Belmont also, as the connections are fed up with the TC. Doesn’t look like the KD also rans are lining up to enter the Preakness either. Maybe one of the Baffert colts will be the chalk. Baffert also trained Game Winner, a West owned colt 5th in the derby, but it doesn't look to be considered for the Preakness either. Telling about the stewards decision is the fact that CD fans booed the Country House connections when the KY Governor presented them the Derby trophy. By rule it appears the stewards made the correct decision. The commission had no other choice but to deny the West appeal. Frankly, I've seen worst bumping and grinding in classic races at the line and those winners stood. The fact that this foul occurred at the quarter pole in the turn without rider fault is a marginal interpretation of the rules. The real loser here is American horse racing. If you are a melodrama enthusiast, the TV coverage of the final two TC races will be of interest to you. As for me, I am looking forward to Royal Ascot. |

To tell you the truth I did not expect Master Fencer to finish the way he did or as close in 6th place. His start was poor and he was last early but he made up tons of ground around the turn and in the straight. Hope he stays in the USA for the Belmont Stakes.
