Santa Anita Park has cancelled horse racing indefinitely after the latest in a series of horse fatalities at the renowned track.
The track has now suffered 21 fatalities in racing and training since the winter meeting began on December 26. |

After reading that story it's obvious they still haven't realised that using a diuretic on Raceday is not the real problem but what they put in them leading UP to Raceday, the abuse of bute and other blockers should be barred like we have here imo.

Santa Anita also abandoned its synthetic track in 2014. They are also checking the track surface. Since some of the breakdowns have occurred on turf, I tend to agree with you. https://www.latimes.com/sports/more/la-sp-santa-anita-racing-deaths-20190309-story.html Further the industry has historically been so invested in drugs, we have just bred ourselves into this situation. Sturdy racehorses won't ever return. At least, that is the case here in the states. |

Reading a few comments Shammy this decision about Lasix and other med .reductions have opened a can of worms but it appears the continued use over the years have created a " must have" mentality and has set like concrete in their DNA, in Sydney yesterday they raced on a heavy 10 ( max. reading in wet) some big fields and plenty of 2yo's, track raced very fair and safe ( grass) this is definately the preferred surface imo, much kinder on the structural features of the racehorse ( more maintenance ) I know but the end result keeps the nay sayers away , hope things improve out of these outcomes and they rip the track up too and start again.

Hope things settle down Shammy. I don't know much about dirt racing and the differences involved but so far and lasix is concerned. We have plenty of USA bred sires and even a few mares. We do get bleeders. Even old Happy had a earlier bleed but trainers bring them up slowly and get plenty of work into them and most seem to stand up to racing again.
It must be hard though if you get a very good horse that bleeds twice. In Australia if that happens you can't race again. Safety issues for both the horse and the jockeys.

A drug ban has been conversation for decades. Unfortunately, the industry leadership has cowardly avoided action. It is probably too late to repair the congenital damage. Running on turf is the safest, but our tracks are not designed to handle full time turf racing. With the efficiency of our on track housing and training we have also depreciated the naturalism that all horses require for good health, physicality, and psychic. Few horses excell in this restricted environment. Few trainers in the states embrace the concept of yards, like in OZ or the UK. The occurrence of 22 track deaths will bring PETA out with a vengeance. |

In the second tier of the Rebel Stakes Omaha Beach surely gained a lot of betting interest for the derby. Very game winner pardon the pun. Derby betting picks all over the place, as they should be in March.

I'm a bit late in my usual posting this week on the events that were held.
The reason was that I was travelling east from my winter residence of Las Vegas to the East Coast and I managed to time my journey so that I could make my maiden visitation to Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Since this was about halfway of the journey I was present for the Rebel Stakes day meeting. The weather cool but dry and perfect for a spring day of racing. G2 Rebel Stakes 1 1/16 miles Oaklawn Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas. Division 1 - Bob Baffert's first odds on (2/5on) Improbable from the wide barrier was forced to race wide and without cover could not hold off Long Range Toddy (8/1) in the run to the wire. Another Californian Galilean was third. Time was 1:42.49. Division 2 - As pointed out already Omaha Beach starting at 9/2 pipped the 2YO Champion Game Winner by a nose (1/2on) to complete the rout punters did not expect. My take from the two results is that both Improbable and Game Winner needed the runs and win come back much the better and be something worth reckoning. Improbable is heading back to California and a probable start in the G1 Santa Anita Derby will be his next target. Baffert will avoid Game Winner clashing with him and could possibly leave the horse in Arkansas for the Arkansas Derby or ship to Kentucky for the Blue Grass Stakes. Next week: G2 Louisiana Derby 1 1/8 miles Fair Grounds, New Orleans, Louisiana G3 Sunland Derby 1 1/8 miles Sunland Park, Sunland, New Mexico My trip took me through New Mexico. I stayed overnight in Albuquerque. Then through Amarillo, Texas on I-40 and onwards to Oklahoma City where I stayed before travelling to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Wonderful trip and fantastic country. |

Hi ya Brudder, have to ask for a request if possible, could you track down a very good horse that left for the USA in the mid fifties, he came over as a 3yo to Sydney from NZ and at the time he left was up wither best , he was trained by Maurice McCarton and ridden by Neville Selwood who rated him the best he'd ridden until a Todman came along , his name was Prince Cortauld, hope you find something, thanks.

Hi Carioca! As you know well in that period many a horse was bought and moved to the USA. Prince Cortauld was one of the more performers who excelled in OZ (Champagne Stakes @ 2YO, All Aged Stakes @ 3YO, Cantala Stakes and QE Stakes @ 4YO and Warwick Stakes and Caulfield Stakes @ 5YO - Just for the benefit of folks here in TBV that this horse was of the best at the time). His last race in Australia was on Wednesday, October 12, 1955 when he won the Caulfield Stakes. Not sure how the sale went to the US but his next race was over a year later (November 12, 1956) in the Washington D.C. International at Laurel, Maryland where he finished third to the English bred Master Boing. The event was only the 5th time being held but even then it was considered the Turf Championship in the US with International exposure added. However, after this event it looks like his career went downhill. His next start was on New Year's Day (1957) on the West Coast at Santa Anita Park in California in the 1 1/4 miiles San Gabriel Handicap where he was unplaced. (New York Times) The following information from equibase. He had 14 more starts that year only to finish a best 3rd. In 1958 he had his only victory in the US from 4 starts that year. It would be interesting to get all his form in the US but I'm note sure it would be complete. |

Got curious myself, as PC was known to have a large heart. Could only find 2 offspring. One was a winless mare Lady Cortauld and a very sturdy winning horse Wallaby3. https://www.pedigreequery.com/wallaby3 116 starts! Neither Lady Cortauld or Wallaby3 were successful breeders. |

Thanks gents for your great response, what intrigued me about Prince Cortauld was the fact they were never afraid to back horses up if all was well , I'm referring to his win in the Futurity Stakes carrying 66kg ( 10st 6lb) over 1400 then the following week over a mile and a half (2400) defeats the wonderful galloper Rising Fast in the WFA QE STK. I enjoyed reading about this horse so much when I was quite young , thanks again.
