Was really interested when Mastercraftsman entered stud in NZ, and he appears to have done well both there and in Oz in addition to Europe and now the USA.
Does he still stand in NZ?

Belmont Park is IMO the best track in the US and by far the best turf track. They also have an inner turf track which doubles for duty as well. The "Widener Turf" is just a manicure of what contiually produces eye popping times for races. Credit needs to go to NYRA for opening up it scheduled with new turf races (BP Gold Cup, Belmont Derby, Belmont Oaks) which are starting to get added attention from racing stables in Europe. Most of the stakes turf winners were from Europe: Thursday G3 Intercontinental Stakes - La Sardene (France) G3 Wonder Again Stakes - La Signare (France) ---------------------------------------------------- Friday G2 New York Stakes - Fourstar Crook (New York State) defeated Sister Charlie (Ireland) 4/7on fav by a head. G2 Gold Cup - Call To Mind (Great Britain) Optional Claiming 1 1/16 m - Almanaar (Great Britain) Optional Claiming 1 m - Raging Bull (France) ---------------------------------------------------- Saturday G2 Jaipur Stakes - Disco Partner (New York) G1 Just a Game Stakes - A Raving Beauty (Germany) G1 Manhattan Stakes - Spring Quality (Pennsylvannia) Optional Claiming 1 1/8 m - Slim Shaddy (Great Britain) |

Hello,
when I checked the peds of the winners at "Belmopnt. I saw La Signare (Siyouni-La Teranga by Beat Hollow), "Wonder Again Stakes. Even she was bred in France, has a typical German damline. She is fronm the "Alex" Family like ALMANDIN. Regards, Ticino

From Thoroughbred Daily News Trained by Didier Guillemin to kick off her career in her native
country, La Signare was a close fourth first up at Toulouse Oct. 17
before breaking through at that venue Nov. 4 and being picked up
privately. The bay rallied for a half-length second in a Keeneland
allowance Apr. 11 won by Toinette (Scat Daddy), who returned to annex
the GIII Edgewood S. at Churchill May 4 over a field that included
Significant Form’s star stablemate Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) and
Daddy Is a Legend (Scat Daddy). From Blood-Horse It was the second start in the United States for La Signare after she
broke her maiden in France in November. Her first stateside effort was a
second-place finish in an April 11 Keeneland allowance. Owned by Madaket Stables, Tim Cambron, Anna Cambron, and Bradley Thoroughbreds, she has $144,413 in earnings.

NTRA Produces a weekly poll for 3YOs and Open Category. As expected Justify heads the list as the 13th Triple Crown winner in the 3yo category. 1 Justify (42) 3c 6-6-0-0 420 1 2 Good Magic 3c 4-1-1-1 339 2 3 Audible 3c 3-2-0-1 282 3 4 Monomoy Girl 3f 4-4-0-0 260 5 5 Hofburg 3c 4-1-1-1 180 9 6 *Gronkowski 3c 1-0-1-0 175 24 7 Bravazo 3c 6-2-1-0 123 4 8 Vino Rosso 3c 5-1-0-1 98 10 9 My Boy Jack 3c 5-2-0-2 72 7 10 Tenfold 3c 5-2-0-1 63 8 * Only North American form Otherwise would have the 2018 record of 4-3-1-0 I feel that Gronkowski could be worthy of a higher ranking if the pollsters would consider his UK starts. He mad the biggest rise jumping from 24th to sixth Theoretically they should since once a horse has made a start in North American all form should be considered. Filly Monomoy Girl is ranked too high IMO. Unless she would face some of these colts and beat them then she has no right to be 4th. Open Category 1 Justify (38) 3c 6-6-0-0 389 1T 2 Accelerate 5h 4-3-1-0 313 3 3 West Coast (2) 4c 2-0-2-0 292 1 4 Unique Bella (1) 4f 3-2-1-0 220 5 5 Mind Your Biscuits (1) 5h 3-1-2-0 180 4 6 Bee Jersey 4c 4-4-0-0 179 - 7 Abel Tasman 4f 2-1-0-0 136 10 8 City Of Light 4c 3-2-0-1 126 7 9 Army Mule 4c 2-2-0-0 86 6 10 Monomoy Girl 3f 4-4-0-0 80 16 This is an interesting list which starts to converge as we the second half of the season heads towards the Breeder's Cup races. Justify has proved uniqueness and has the support of many a pollster. I think he will show up in The Travers at Saratoga for 3yos over 1 1/4 miles before embarking on one more race, probably at Del Mar and finishing with Breeder's Cup Classic. But he will have to face the older horses and that is where it will get interesting. Bob Baffert trains West Coast and this horse had wonderful ending campaign in 2017 and was no slouch in the two richest races on the dirt this year. Again Unique Bella is a talented mare but unless she beats the boys she should not be this high. Mind Your Biscuits is a strong sprinter who just failed to win the G1 Metropolitan Mile over the weekend beaten by Bee Jersey who finnaly gots some votes to crack the Top Ten Rankings. |

Saturday at Belmont Park, NY was a wonderful card of racing that was predominantly turf and 3YOs. G1 Belmont Derby Invitational (3YOs) 1 1/4 miles Turf - Catholic Boy (5/1) continued his turf dominance over Analyze It when he kicked back in the straight for short head victory with Irish invader Hunting Horn in 3rd and French bred Kingstar in 5th. Time was a good 1:59.28. G1 Belmont Oaks Invitational (3YOF) 1 1/4 miles Turf - Aiden O'Brien trained Athena (IRE) was just too strong as the European based fillies filled the trifecta with Thewayiam (FRA) and Chipolata (FRA) in a very fast 1:58.71. G3 Dwyer Stakes (3YOs) 1 mile dirt - Firenze Fire returned to his G1 winning form as a 2YO and trounced a good field by 5 lengths in 1:33.74 over Seven Trumpets and Mendelssohn. Great to see this horse return to form and he will be an actual threat in the Breeder's Cup Mile cone autumn. |

With Justify retired now and seemingly the 3YO honors wrapped up there is almost a half of season still to race for and some nice stakes. This weekend there were three such events and its worth posting here. I mean I was reporting every prep race prior the Triple Crown races and not mentioning now whats going would be a void that really does not credence to the events in summer. Especially with G1 Travers Stakes still to come at Saratoga Friday 27/7/18 Saratoga Curlin Stakes 1 1/8m (3yo) - Hofburg (Tapit - Soothing Touch, by Touch Gold) (7th KDerby, 3rd BelmontStks) started at 1/4on and made a mockery of the race winning by 6 lengths in a race where conditions favored a horse like him who had not won a graded event in 2018. Next the Travers Stakes. (IMO this race should not have been run on the same weekend as the 2 Graded Events for 3YOs - as such thinning the starting fields. Only 5 started in the Curlin and 5 in the next race that I'm about to write about.) Saturday 28/7/18 Saratoga G2 Jim Dandy Stakes 1 1/8m (3yo) - Another small field with several horses who appeared in the Triple Crown events facing off. In a not particularly impressive fashion, Tenfold (Curlin - Tempress, by Tapit) (3rd Preakness, 5th BelmontStks) veered in the straight a couple of times held on to defeat Flameaway (13th KDerby) by 3/4 length and the fast finishing favourite Vino Rosso (9th KDerby, 4th BelmontStks). If anything to take out this race would be to see Vino Rosso run out the 1 1/4 miles Travers Stakes - he could be very close. Sunday 29/7/18 Monmouth Park G1 Haskell Invitational 1 1/8m (3yo) - Seven horses showed up but only the 2YO Champion Good Magic (Curlin - Glinda the Good, by Hard Spun) (2nd KDerby, 4th Preakness) looked the goods as he returned to back to winning form as the 1/2on favourite winning by 3 lengths over Bravazo (6th KDerby, 2nd Preakness, 6th BelmontStks) who was 6 lengths clear of the rest of the pack. Most of these will show up for the Travers on August 25th, but there is one more entry that is worth mentioning here. Connections of Canadian filly Wonder Gadot (Medagia D'oro - Loving Vindication, by Vindication) have indicated that they will be entering the fray rather than the G1 Alabama Stakes (also a 1 1/4m event) for 3yo fillies since they see no competitive reason for divisional honors to run in that event with Monomoy Girl skipping that event. The filly has been outstanding in the Canadian Triple Crown events winning the Queen's Plate Stakes and Prince of Wales Stakes. No filly has run in the Travers Stakes since Davona Dale who finished 4th in 1979 as the favourite to General Assembly. While fillies that were placed include Chris Evert running 3rd in 1974, and Bed O' Roses 2nd in 1950. Seven fillies have won the event, the last over 100 years ago in 1915 Lady Rotha won on disqualification.

This weekend we had the Arlington Park Turf Festival from Arlington, Illinois. Arlington Park has gone downhill but its management still tries to prop up the main races. GI Arlington Million 1 1/4m (3YO+) Chilean Bred Robert Bruce (Fast Company (IRE) - Lady Pelusa (ARG)) came from behind to swap for trainer Chad Brown who continues his outstanding run on the turf. This horse has only lost once and that was an unlucky close 6th in the G1 Manhattan Stakes when he was boxed and finished all over them. I had to have a look at videos from Chile and the 4 G1s and a GII he won over a mile were simply freakish. The owner indicate he could not sell in Chile because there was no one who would buy him at what he is worth. There is a $2 million bonus if the horse wins the G1 Japan Cup. Also by winning the Arlington Million the horse "Win an You're In" for the Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs. Last victory in Chile GI El Ensayo Mega |

Surely he wouldn't go to Japan Brudder? He beat statues over 2400m in Chile. He'd get spaced in the JC on that run.
What else is there for him in the US this year on turf at a mile to ten furlongs?

G1 $1,250,000 Travers Stakes (3YO 1 1/4m) Catholic Boy (7/1) confirmed his dual surface ability with a convincing win overtaking Mendelssohn (13/1) as they entered the straight. Bravazo battled on for third. Favourite Good Magic found the task too difficult when he found himself 5 wide after the start into the first turn. |

He's a rig but plenty with that affliction have done ok at stud. Gr1 wins on Turf and Dirt make him very interesting to breeders. I've had a chat with someone I know associated with Siena and they'll get back to me shortly.

The NTRA weekly poll 1 Accelerate (9) 5-H 5-4-1-0 346 1 2 Justify (27) 3-C 6-6-0-0 314 2 3 Diversify (2) 5-G 4-3-0-0 274 3 4 Monomoy Girl 3-F 5-5-0-0 236 4 5 Abel Tasman 4-F 3-2-0-0 176 11 6 Catholic Boy 3-C 5-3-1-0 156 20 7 Sistercharlie 4-F 4-3-1-0 99 8 8 Mind Your Biscuits 5-H 4-1-3-0 97 6 9 Catalina Cruiser 4-C 3-3-0-0 75 13 10 Unique Bella 4-F 4-3-1-0 47 7 Just a few comments on this weekly poll which continually raises eyebrows here in the US. Firstly it was not unexpected to see Travers winner Catholic Boy move into the top ten as his form since the Florida Derby has been outstanding. Now, the continual ploy of these pollsters to vote for retired horses is simply bogus. Understanding that these folks vote for nostalgia and a bit of hope that these horses come out of retirement but once that move has been made its hardly a reason to keep pulling for them. Another bogus stance is that these pollsters really don't vote for turf horse. Arlington Million winner Robert Bruce for one is better than any of the four female horses. He is in 11th place but you have to go into the notes to see that. IMO the move impressive performance this weekend was the win by Catalina Cruiser on the West Coast at Del Mar in the the G2 Pat O'Brien Stakes. He really did cruise for an easy win as the 2/5on favorite |

This note from this weekend in the US was that a Japanese bred horse won the G1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga over 1 1/8 mile and basically got a free entry into the G1 Breeder's Cup Classic. Yoshida (Heart's Cry (JPN) out of Hilda's Passion, by Canadian Fro) just like Catholic Boy last week came from a last start fifth on the grass in the G1 Fourstardave Handicap as the favourite and a fifth in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. Good win but I think there are better ones for the Classic.

In the last month many of the horses in this poll have been active with a selection of rich preparatory races for the Breeder's Cup in about 4 weeks time. So the poll is such: 1 Accelerate (13) 5-H 6-5-1-0 379 1 2 Justify (28) 3-C 6-6-0-0 343 2 3 Monomoy Girl 3-F 6-5-1-0 208 5 4 Mind Your Biscuits 5-H 5-2-3-0 186 10 5 Catholic Boy 3-C 5-3-1-0 176 6 6 Yoshida 4-C 3-2-0-0 152 7 7 West Coast 4-C 2-0-2-0 127 13 8 Imperial Hint 5-H 5-4-0-0 126 12 9 Catalina Cruiser 4-C 3-3-0-0 104 8 10 Diversify 5-G 5-3-0-0 94 3 Accelerate holds on to with a troubled win in the G1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita. Monomoy Girl was disqualified in the G1 Cotillion Stakes at Philadelphia Park last week and placed second. Mind Your Biscuits bolted in the G3 Lukas Classic at Churchill Downs on Saturday and is peaking just nice for the Breeder's Cup. Imperial Hint was the most impressive winner in the sprint division this weekend in the G1 Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park. Will probably start odds on in the BCup Sprint. Biggest loser and fell out of the top ten was Abel Tasman who ran a shocker as the 1/10on favourite finishing 5th in the G1 Zenyetta Stakes.

Next: Jan 25. Thursday Listed Smarty Jones Stakes over 1 mile at Oaklawn Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas Opening Day of Oaklawn Park meeting which has of late has started to attract far more elite jockeys and trainers who stay for the whole meeting (with the infusion of casino/gaming money). The race has attracted some entries who have already earned qualification points for the KDerby. In particular, Long Range Toddy and Bankit who were first and second in the Remington Springboard Mile last month.
