Nice that you mention Songbird who cruised to victory in the GII Las Virgenes Stakes at 1/10on. But its a bit curious how the World Rankings have ranked her so high @ #4 in the world as the highest 3YO and much higher than the leading 3yo on the Triple Crown trail Mohaymen. (equal 17th) It would be really competitive of the connections to face the C&G in the Triple Crown races but it is more likely that they will point to the Kentucky Oaks where she is a solid morning line 3/1 favourite in the upcoming Future Wager coming up this weekend. Going back to the world rankings our own Chautauqua is in 11th, while Bow Creek, Holler, Japonisme, Lucky Hussler and Terravista are all 17th. A few of the a running this weekend so it will be interesting to see how they are ranked the next time these World Rankings are published in mid April. |

Not sure if she has a thread of her own, but I see Zenyatta,s foal born about a week ago, by War Front, has died. Her one last year was lost in a paddock accident , so she is having bad luck as a Mum , poor girl.

Odds makers had it right!
Nyquist easily from Exaggerator, Gun Runner and Mohaymen .... No big shock for the second largest crowd (167,227) except for the thunderstorm which let loose 1 hour before the race! |

As expected the 3 placegetters from the KD are expected to enter the Preakness Stakes. There are other runners from the Derby and also the also eligible that didn't get a start. A few of these are over their heads.
Nonetheless, the race will get plenty of focus. |

When a Maiden Isn’t a MaidenThe sixth race at Belmont Park on Sunday, May 15th, was a $75,000 maiden special weight that was run on the inner turf course with a field of eleven. The race was won in an impressive time of 1:59.94 by Mongolian Prince. The four-year-old New Zealand bred, who is owned by the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry, paid $35.60 to win, while earning the $45,000 winner’s share of the purse. Mongolian Prince came into the New York race with just one other listed race in the United States and that was a fifth place finish, beaten by 14 lengths, in a March 18 maiden special weight on the Gulfstream Park turf where he was bet to be the 4.00-1 third choice. What makes this particular maiden victory unusual is that Mongolian Prince was not a maiden at all. Mongolian Prince had already raced five times in China and had recorded three victories. As a matter of fact, he was regarded as one of the most promising three-year-old stakes winners in China. The Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry is one of the leading owners of thoroughbreds in China. In recent years Lin Lang, the head of the IMRHI, has spent millions of dollars to bring almost 1,000 horses, bred in New Zealand, to race in China. The group was very excited to bring one of their best runners in Mongolian Prince to compete in the United States and his arrival was announced in two prominent American racing websites in January. Clearly, the fact that Mongolian Prince managed to run at Gulfstream as an apparent first time starter and then at Belmont with only that distant fifth place finish listed, raises many questions. The most important question is why did his races in China not become part of his race record when his paperwork went through the Jockey Club offices in New York. The betting public did not have the appropriate information and the other ten horses in the Belmont Park race were not actually running against a second time maiden starter. Mongolian Prince won that race by a head over Revved Up, who runs for the prominent American barn, the Phipps Stable. At this point it seems probable that nobody was trying to intentionally perpetrate a betting coup, but more likely that this is one of those unforeseen situations that come along for which none of the governing bodies was prepared. As we have seen with lots of horse racing issues, the many and varying official organizations, be they domestic and/or international, have trouble working together to do what is best for racing. On the other hand it also seems like nobody outside of the official organizations was willing to make sure that the American racing public got all of the information about Mongolian Prince. Did they all think that somebody else would take care of the dissemination of the correct information? Obviously the ownership group knew his past record and did not make sure that Mongolian Prince’s past performances were complete. Should they be held accountable for that lack of full disclosure of that vital information? No doubt that all of the groups involved, from the race tracks to the Jockey Club to the individual state racing commissions, had a roll in what happened when Mongolian Prince was allowed to run in the two American races. At the very least, provisions have to be made to prevent this from happening again and there should be consideration about whether any kind of official action be taken about the recent maiden victory. |

Wow anyone see the ride on the fave Nyquist in the Preakness? Talk about slaughter central. If a jock did that on a fave in a big race here in Aus I reckon they'd cop a suspension. Just crazy tactics.

Just watching a replay of the Preakness on ESPN2 and the "experts"certainly warned against Nyquist getting stuck in a speed dual.

The great man Bart, once said "There is not much we can learn from American racing" , or words to that effect . I wonder how many horses finish up with ulcerated eyes from "kickback"even more so with blinkers. And all that beautiful grass on the inside unused on the day.Sometimes we take for granted how well off we are.

No wonder they allow/use lasix because racing in those conditions would play havoc with thoroughbreds lungs. How they even breathe in those conditions is amazing.

Reefer Madness: Lynch, Private Zone Penalty is InsanePrivate Zone | Sarah K Andrew By Bill Finley It’s 2016 and, so far as crimes go, smoking a little weed is somewhere up there between littering and jaywalking. In Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington, smoking marijuana isn’t even illegal. Yet, according to the Daily Racing Form, since trainer Brian Lynch allegedly tested positive for marijuana, the New York Gaming Board has ordered that his Grade I-winning sprinter Private Zone (Macho Uno) has to be scratched from Friday’s GII True North S. at Belmont. Consider the crime. Consider the punishment. The two don’t come anywhere close to fitting. “I think it shows a rather extreme and not thoroughly logical application of racing regulations,” said Frank Becker, an equine law specialist in Lexington, Kentucky and author of “Equine Law,” the leading treatise on the subject. It seems that the Gaming Board can test any licensed backstretch worker anytime it wants. With Lynch, his attorney Drew Mollica and Gaming Board officials all keeping quiet Wednesday, we’re left to speculate that the trainer was chosen at random to be tested. In the wrong place at the wrong time. Lynch is a licensed trainer in New York, so he has given the Gaming Board the right to test him, but why did the Gaming Board bother to do so? Jockeys? Yes. For safety concerns, they can never be allowed to ride under the influence of anything stronger than a Mountain Dew. But trainers? For pot? Who cares? There just isn’t any justification for going around and testing them to see whether or not they had done something as innocuous as smoking a joint. Perhaps an owner should not want his or her horses being trained by someone who smokes an illegal drug, but that should be between the trainer and the client. Rene Douglas, who represents Private Zone’s ownership group, Good Friends Stable, apparently isn’t concerned about Lynch’s habits as he told the DRF, “I’m not mad at Brian, I’m human too.” The real problem here, though, is not that Lynch personally got hit so hard for such a minor offense, but that the owners paid such a steep price. This is a Grade I winner that was going to be the favorite in a $250,000 race. The Good Friends Stable did nothing wrong, but it has been levied what amounts to one of the most substantial penalties you’ll ever seen in racing. They didn’t have the opportunity to transfer the horse to another trainer because it had already been entered under Lynch’s name for the True North when he allegedly tested positive for marijuana. That’s not right. If they want to continue going around digging under rocks to find people who committed the most minor of infractions then they’re going to have to find a way to not make the owner and the horse pay the price for something they had no control over. And how ironic is it that they nailed a trainer who appears to be perfectly legit when it comes to what drugs he uses on his horses? Lynch has just one violation on his record, a Class C positive in 2012 in Kentucky that was such a minor deal all he received was a $500 fine. In a game overrun with cheating, they nailed a guy who doesn’t appear to be a cheater. Perhaps their resources could have been better spent going after the real bad guys, the people that dope horses, and not some poor guy who smoked some pot. When someone there is ready to speak, the Gaming Board may tell you that rules are rules, that Lynch tested positive for marijuana and therefore had to temporarily give up his license, that a horse entered under the name of an unlicensed trainer can’t run. Yes, there are rules, but there’s also common sense, not to mention what’s fair and what’s not. For so many reasons, this is idiotic. Private Zone should never have been scratched. |

Not to hijack the Private Zone incidence which is bizarre to say the least I want to make another comment about this same Belmont Stakes Racing Carnival meeting this weekend.
NYRA has scheduled some very interesting races which really go back in time. On Thursday they had a race over 1 15/16 miles (~3100 metres on the Inner Track) Belmont Coronation Invitational Stakes for Fillies and Mares. Today Friday, the same day as the scratching of Private Zone in the G2 True North Stakes, a 1 1/2 miles dirt race for Fillies and Mares (Rags to Riches Invitational Stakes) and lo and behold rare as rare here in the US the 2 miles Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes on the Widener Turf Course for the stakes amount of US300,000. Tomorrow there are two 1 1/2 miles races - nut they are on the dirt - the open Brooklyn Invitational Stakes and of course the last leg of the Triple Crown - The Belmont Stakes. Going back to today's 2 mile Gold Cup which is attracted 12 starters with several European breds is finally a sign for US breeders and owners that long distance racing is needed for the breed, especially for here in the US which is predominantly speed based on the dirt. The winner of today's race is worthy of a mention because maybe one day a horse from the US can also perform and impress at this distance in the Melbourne Cup. The winner ran the 2 miles in a not too shabby 3:17.29 (NTR). Now lets go to the video! http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/race/USA/BEL/2016/6/10/10/belmont-gold-cup-invitational-s |

Won in a canter, the rename Hollywood Oaks now the Summertime Oaks since the track is closed now and all the Graded races moved over to other tracks including Santa Anita where this race was held. She started at 1/20on and paid the same for place and show bearing a negative pool which cost Santa Anita $201,400.83 because of a negative show pool—$1,017,594 of the $1,081,223 pool was wagered on Songbird. Here in the US tracks have to pay a dividend - no money back. Video http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/race/USA/SA/2016/6/18/8/summertime-oaks-gr-ii Heading to the East Coast and her next start might be in the Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga over 1 1/8 miles. |

The Coaching Club American Oaks since 2011 is run at Saratoga on opening weekend, July 24. Before it was run at Belmont Park. Possible plan after that is : Aug. 20 Alabama (gr. I)—also at Saratoga —followed by Sept. 24 Cotillion Stakes (gr. I) at Parx Racing (near Philadelphia) and the Breeders' Cup back at Santa Anita. |

Songbird was epic last week. Exaggerator pretty good in the Haskell today. Just a shame we can't get these races live. The California stuff is great, but these are massive races and those that saw a sloppy track at Monmouth today could have cleaned up on Exaggerator.
